All this technology distracts from the fundamental ugliness and cruelty and stupidity of war. The acronyms help objectify things so they are further away from any human or moral consideration - everything gets focussed on the interesting requirements and deliverables of equipment. In reality, war is about official deception of men conned into it, then fear, boredome, cruel injuries & disablement, fear and indelible guilt on both sides. Mechanical man, the fall-guy, and the families injured.
Good stuff for URBAN COMBAT~ period, not good for jungles and the like, there are such things as hackers. Old-school first and foremost all that other shit is just niffty, until they out wit it.
As of the last inspection, 100% of hardware and software is on schedule in development and currently meeting all budget restrictions. In fact, they have been progressing slightly faster than previously thought. Defense secretary Robert Gates has considered canceling a small part of the program, some $230 million, out of the total $340 billion.
@muunboy2007 They did cancel the project because it was too expensive and it did not work as hoped, and now when the fights is in Afghanistan this system is useless there.
lol who are we kidding if there was a serious i bet there would be 1 or 2 nukes used ! like america would do one on russia expecting it to stop them , but russia fires one back. Its plausible if one country initially only intends to need to use 1
russia's military budget is around $150 billion and the us budget is around $500 billion, russian equipment costs just a fraction of US equipment however the difference in cost is certainly not reflective of a difference in quality. example - m1a2 abrams - $5million per unit, T 90 MBT - $1.4million, the T90 may not be better than the M1, but its certainly not 5 times worse, In terms of cost, 5 T 90's would easily defeat a single M1.
don't forget the difference in labor costs and living standards between the two countries. An abrams might cost $5 mil right now, but if a serious war breaks out, the US could churn out these tanks like can openers
@NallePu83 green berets and other us spec ops learn how to use the electronics. and what to do when they fail. like if their gps fails. then they can use a map with a compass.
My question is (I served 79-88, so all this is new) what happens when the enemy sends a brutally effective computer virus? My point is, if we become almost completely dependent on all this computer crud, and a virus takes out the whole system, what happens then? Will the troops have effective training beyond computer reliance? By the time this stuff comes in completely, such an event might be a rude awakening.
Just to answer your question. Im a Marine and I know that we still train in the basics in land nav, and many other things. Im not sure if the Army does or not i imagine that they do.
I know that both branches train extensively on the basics. I just think that when the above system is mostly or completely implemented, the amount of training on the basics will decrease. For instance, when CAD came out, drafters trained less and less on hand drafting, and now, most drafters are completely unskilled at hand drafting. I just believe that FCS would be susceptible to virus and regular failure, and many troops would need to have skills that they may not have been fully trained on.
Yeah your probably right, and I dont blame you. Hopefully our military leaders understand this and have taken that into consideration, but im sure most havent and dont care.
Because multicam was originaly designed for FCS but the Army chose the ACU colors. Multicam is going to be the new Army colors around 2012. (unless the Army FCS program gets cut by our new president) :(
I'd prefer Multicam over ACU any day. The dye is much more effective, and the clothing system itself is much more durable, comfortable, and easy to wear with the armor chassis.
ACU was picked because it was cheaper. MultiCam's the future, and I look forward to being able to wear it instead of ACU.
also there is bomb design. Although the gun type is the most simple of fission devices it is still fairly hard to pull off, and then it must be placed in a reliable delivery package. Iran may have dirty bombs, but nuclear bombs in the kiloton yield range must be delivered for it to be used.
But Iran is still developing a nuclear program you know. Iran may have dirty bombs like you said, but in ten years I'm sure that Iran will have more advanced nuclear weapons.
The russians will study every minute detail of this FCS, and develop technology to counter every piece of equipment. This system is useless against equal opponents. Robots can be developed to take the flying robots out. Robots can be developed to take the ground robots out. Everything can be copied and used back against the US lol
dude shutup the russian are out since 1990. They spends 30 billion a year on their military. The US spends 500 billion or more. The US army alone get more money than the entire russian military does in 3 and a half years
If WW3 starts then FCS wont help becouse everything will be nuked in Russian and in USA ifnact it might that hall world will be destroyed during WW3 so your lucky yanks didnt start WW3 in 1980's
Said like a proper Russian. Too bad Stalin didn't kill all of you when he was around. Would have been the only decent thing he ever did. It has always been Russia that has threatened the world, not the US.
No country has a monopoly on goodness and freedom. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, and we have not been vigilant. The US has met all of the criteria to make it a communist country. Go look up military commissions act. Our freedom is only an illusion.
It depends really who will be playing in the war. Will the US and Russia be on the same side? West versus (Middle) East? US and Russia may not publicly get along, but remember that the US helps Russia keep track of nuclear weapons that aren't currently lost. Also keep in mind certain Latin America countries.
A nuclear program and a nuclear weapon are very different. U-235 exists in very low concentrations in uranium samples, it can take years to enrich a sample to even a few percent, and then it is only good for nuclear fuel, in that the chain reactions will commonly stop short, prohibiting the bomb effect. Weapons grade uranium is far more concentrated in U-235 than in energy grade uranium. And then there is the extremely small concentration of plutonium by product.
That does not really matter, eventually, they can get a big boom, either one way or another, a nuke or a dirty bomb. Details are of no concern, the concern is that they have the motivation to use such a device, and they are working on a way to be able to make one. Would our children ever forgive us if we do nothing?
WWIII will happen, but without WMDs, no major player will use WMDs. They haven't been used in any war except WWII, and only because we didn't know how bad the effects were. Only insane leaders would use nukes, which is why Iran will go down, as we cannot permit the use of such weapons, no matter what. War is no the end of the world - a nuclear war is.
Did it ever cross your mind that the US wants other countrys to see this..Anyways what they show is only 10% of what they have most likely, so the russians can study what ever they want = ] doesnt mean they have the money to even try to create something to counter it ^_^
