  • Very sad but beautiful

  • Don't jump on me about this, but this type of music is incredbily unhealthy to get wrapped up in. So many of us in the 70's were listening to Joni, Neil Young, etc., and we were revelling in the depression that the music brought with it. The world is NOT gloomy, sad, horrible, and hopelessly unjust. Enjoy the music, but don't become it.

  • I know what you mean. Have a swim, but don't drown. I feel songs like these are cathartic for the performer at the time, but..yeh...like u say. Found the same with Tori Amos...luv her music though !

  • "Swim but don't drown." Well said. I'll never forget seeing Niel Young win an award in his later years. He said to the crowd: "You know, people usually assume that I'm a sad and depressed person, probably because of the music. But I've had a wonderful and happy life." They have found both a market and an artistic outlet with the melancholy tunes, but boy, if you take them too seriously some of them could drive you to despair.

  • For sure. By the way, I'm seeing Neil Young this weekend here in Australia !! Nice chatting to ya .

  • Awesome! I bet he still rocks. Have a good time and let us know how it was.

  • I'll let you know !

  • Emotional music for REAL people.

LOL. GET RID OF IGNORANT ROBOTS ...

  • I'm 19 and my Mom and i both love joni she loves when i put joni on, it reminds her of her teenage years. we love to sing both sides now together even if it's a little embarassing.

  • That's sweet. Joni reminds me of my mum, too.

  • Put yourself in a yoga class, Billy. Puts your guns away.

  • This is polluted with uptight, verbose, idiots. Please shut up and just listen... thanks.

  • Excuse me, but you don't sound happy, joyous, or free; only an uptight, unhappy, grumpy, and slave to rigid thinking would leave such a comment.

  • Wonderful song... it make me feel so... blue!

  • Thanks Sean Fogharty for introducing me to Joni at the age of 16 - have loved her ever since p don't ever know what happened to Sean but hope he has a great life xx

  • "Blue" was my first Joni album. So many great songs on it.

"Court & Spark" is similarly chock-full of goodness!

  • great voice, great person. Love Joni and all her music.

  • and your point is?

  • yeah, BLUE is really an amazing album, isn't it? certainly a desert island pick for me.

  • dude, don't you have anything better to do? i love my tattoos. they are al special and powerful to me. and it is NOT my parents flesh it is MY flesh. they do not own me. i respect myself in the ways i feel are approprite for me. purity is in the soul, not onthe skin.

  • As someone born in the mid-50s, this woman kept me sane throughout my high school and college years. Without her music, without her, I'm not even sure I'd be here today. Sadly it wasn't enough to save my sister despite being able to play all of her music on the piano which I do now to keep my sister's memory alive. Joni - thank you for your music from the bottom of my heart.

  • i want joni tattooed on me.

  • Joni's 65th bday today 11-07-08! And many more!! Great tune - one of a gazillion....

  • Happy birthday Great Lady...fram Italy... thanks!

  • One of Joni's most beautiful and heartbreaking.

  • Re: Last comment!

The same teacher rejected my own story a little while later cos it began:

    "Once Upon A Hill"

And that was not the norm lol! OMG!!

I am glad that I have retained my character and views on talents regardless of poor school and environment changes and influences over the years!

  • I became aware of Joni and the likes of stevie wonder at the age of about ten via my family and opening my mind to good music and lyrics!

I remember my friend at skool having no ideas for a poem example one day, so I wrote one using Joni lyrics wordings and he got a 'E' Wow we were 10!

How sad and lacking in creativity is that a reflection on teaching back then!

  • Or... maybe your teacher recognised the source and didn't want to reward plagiarism?

  • To: happybat1977

Maybe so, it was a long time back and I was at primary then, so maybe I saw it the way I wanted to back then or a little of both!

  • marginal at best. i think rider660r had an appropriate description.

  • I am American and i love her music and she IS an amazing artist...

  • I shall sum up what many people who are reading your comment would like to say:

    "FUCK YOU"

  • Well you've got her, kind of. See, SHE is the cat being skinned. And if you've ever felt that way, you would respect her for the amazing artist she is in being able to capture that in music.

  • rider660r there is something wrong with you to have so much anger towards Joni. No offence to Americans, but only a mean-ass american could say something like that.

  • yes but i didn't say that did I? I said Americans. Americans that are driven by a shallow and material culture. Was it really that inaccurate of me? -_-

  • Yes because not all Americans are shallow and not all shallow people are American. It a negative generalisation about an entire group of people, like saying all black people are criminals.

  • ok then.

  • Thisnameistaken11, what you saying about negative generalisation may be true but only you believe in a construct such as nationality.

  • gosh, I mispelled quite a lot. let me try again:

Thisnameistaken11, what you're saying about negative generalisation may be true, but only if you believe in a construct such as nationality.

  • Of course nationality is an artificial construct, but that does not mean it doesn't exist. It's a word we arbitrarily use to describe people born in a certain place, just as race is a word we arbitrarily use to describe people of a certain biological background.

  • You're the missing link between the reptiles and monkeys!

  • but the woman can play guitair it s even lovely

for a woman it is difficult enough

you are something joni i am impressed

  • Joni is geweldig. Ik dank mijn ouders dat zij mij met haar muziek hebben laten opgroeien.

  • Sure! ^^ (But not only them, also Robert, Neil, Carole, etc.)

  • Love that image at 2:19....like a Gustav Klimt. She is a gem!

  • "Songs are like tatoos.." That lyric always stayed with me

  • God thank my parents I grew up on Joni & James..

  • same here... I hated it when my parents would listen to them all the time but now I realized they are music geniuses. I've come a full circle.

  • has anyone heard sarah mchlachlans cover of this? i think its brilliant

  • Joni's lyrics are stunning. Simply wonderful! A gift for our times........

  • This is one of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs from one of the greatest albums of the twentieth century.

  • Agreed!

  • i believe her to be the GREATEST song writer of my time and her talent, grace and truthfullness are the trademark of an old soul blessing us with her soulful magic.

    SHINE On Joni.............

  • Make that agreed times two.

  • Chanteuse. You have captivated my soul for almost forty years. River, Circle Game, Free Man in Paris, Big Yellow Taxi, For Free, Help Me, Coyote, For the Roses, Two Grey Rooms the list goes on and on. Very few can match the evocative, emotional Joni weaves throughout her music, drawings and paintings. Here is an artist for the ages.

  • I thin I may have the complete discography of this awesome woman. I love her relentlessly. My favorite of all time is Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, which I consider to be definitive of her person and her work. She is an exceptional lyricist and wordsmith. Nobody like her and never again, unless she comes back as a brunette.

  • Ken-

In the heat of the moment, I have said a dozen times here on youtube, "there will never be another like this one, or that." Examples, John Lennon, Greg Lake, Dan Fogelberg,G. Gershwin, Burt Bacharach, Stan Getz etc. and a few others, but, I have to say that I agree with you. If she's not number one she's at least in the top five. Some of her work has a most indescribable effect upon me.

  • She is the only woman I ever musically met who would admit to having drank

such a lot until she "pissed a Tequila Anaconda the full length of the parking lot." From Don Juan's Reckless Daughter-Talk to me! Lots of writers, musicians and vocalists are very much one dimensional. She has a literacy about her that is highly entertaining. To apply such intellect, typically boring in a crowded room to her music and with such precision is just mindboggling. Sexy assed scorp on top of it all.

  • never really listened to her, she used the word, "hippest" in this song...when was it written 60's 70's?

  • the album "blue" came out in 1971

  • unique voice ,,awesome ,,close yr eyes when listening ,,,,

  • this is awesome!! love it. check out the Cat Power version. love that one too. :)

  • I love Joni Mitchell! Blue is my favorite album

  • just great

  • One of the best and most influential songwriters of the late 20th century, along with Dylan. Unique voice. Sublime.

  • this was from her best album BLUE. i lived on an island just across from where she had-has a place on the ocean.i would look out over the ocean haunted by JONI'S beautiful music.

  • exquisite

  • The voice takes us with her. luv you Lady Joni.

  • this song is ravagingly beautiful.

    thank you, Joni.

  • Awesome.

  • Mac Dre sampled this song and brought it to a whole new generation which is what sampling in hip hop is for, not just stealing someones songs as most feel. It's all done for the love, if your a real sampling artist you want people to hear beautiful music and this is it.

  • preach.

  • joni i love you

  • so beatiful... thank you!

  • she rocks........simply amazing. Her talent is carrying her into another generation!

  • She turns me into a little boy lol
