Kirk is amazing. end of story. his wah pedal is used alot in his solos because he says it characterizes him, it shows who he is...he loves it! if you dont like it, go listen to megadeth or something like that where tue guitar solos sound like the guitar is puking something out.
This awesome. Kirk is such a nice dude, but a horrible lead player, always has been always will be. Bob Rock, with the possible exception of Mutt Lang, has produced more top rock albums than God.
I think people are being too hard on Bob Rock here, he's a dick by necessity. I mean, yeah, he's really being a douche and it just creates a stressful environment, but he wanted to make the best sound he possibly could with this record, and to do that, you can't just go with the alright take, you have to wait for the good one.
I really liked Bob's approach here. If you wanna be great, you can't just fuck around. If you wanna turn lead into gold, you gotta dig deeper. Kirk wanted to do the greatest metal solo of all time? He did make it! But he had to have someone telling him that it wasn't going to come out of his ass like magic.

Im almost 40 years old. I grew up listening to metallica and still do all the time. Some of the changes here and there i havent liked, but we ALL change as we grow older, and their music shows their growth.

The experts that know how to describe what it should be, should pick the thing up and show us how it's supposed to be done. BR and all the other know-it-alls never do that.
Watching this out of context gets people all fired up. What many don't realize is Bob is producing the album and he is producing Kirk. This is his job. The way he goes about it, pushing Kirks buttons etc, it's basic studio psychology. In the end it worked and Bob got the solo out of Kirk that was best for the song. One listen to the noodling that kirk was doing before the final take proves that producers serve an important purpose. Because of this process we now have that amazing solo to enjoy.

When any musician is looking for a sound, let them find it first before you go cramming your opinions down his/her throat. Kirk clearly found it here and showed Bob exactly what Kirk was looking for.... and it stuck, and the Black album went on to be one of Metallicas best selling albums to date. Who would have guessed? Kirk knows how to pull off a solo?

Metallica was definitely in the last generation of music coming out of the US that could be both popular and extremely articulate. Music in the US is fucking pathetic now. Even Metallica's stuff has been going downhill. But, then again, they are middle aged family men now who drink merlot instead of 40's, and who sleep at the Ritz Carlton instead of the Motel 6. Guess it comes with the territory. Still miss it.
Bob Rock did a great job at making the Black Album but after that he got lazy and that's why Metallica will succeed without him like they did before in the 80's.

Black album, Rock did a good job. I think after that, Metallica should have fired him. After that, their material became more Pop for a while. I think after this, Black was a major success so Metallica put more faith into Bob Rock and at the same time, Bob Rock's head got bigger around them. so, he had even more control. You hear Load and Relaod, sounds way polished. Too slick. Then St. Anger sounds like Nu Metal and because of that is already starting to sound dated.
Bob is 1000% correct on this. That solo wouldn't work if it started out high and went low then back high again. It doesn't flow with the rhythm of the song. He's the producer, that's why you hired him, otherwise you'd be sounding like a fucking garage band. Lars sitting there on the sideline didn't help anything either, he's a fuckin pussy and eveyr time he opens his mouth he is whining about something.

Watching this out of context gets people all fired up. What many don't realize is Bob is producing the album and he is producing Kirk. This is his job. The way he goes about it, pushing Kirks buttons etc, it's basic studio psychology. In the end it worked and Bob got the solo out of Kirk that was best for the song. One listen to the noodling that kirk was doing before the final take proves that producers serve an important purpose. Because of this process we now have that amazing solo to enjoy.

I too like you hate him controlling the creativity of the band, but he did get a kickass solo out of Kirk. You gotta give credit to his musicality where he literally turned these illiterate guys into professional recording artists. It takes guts to do that. And FYI, Metallica hired him AFTER deciding they wanna make a hard rock album. Give this guy some credit :)

Yes he was too cocky, and tried to govern the band with his ideas, but had Bob not been forcing him we probably would have a different solo, good nevertheless. Just hear the difference between AJFA and Black Album, and here i mean the production quality. He trained these guys to be note perfect. And I believe you're one of those musically challenged people who think Metallica sucked after Black Album

Black album, Rock did a good job. I think after that, Metallica should have fired him. After that, their material became more Pop for a while. I think after this, Black was a major success so Metallica put more faith into Bob Rock and at the same time, Bob Rock's head got bigger around them. so, he had even more control. You hear Load and Relaod, sounds way polished. Too slick. Then St. Anger sounds like Nu Metal and because of that is already starting to sound dated.

Bob is 1000% correct on this. That solo wouldn't work if it started out high and went low then back high again. It doesn't flow with the rhythm of the song. He's the producer, that's why you hired him, otherwise you'd be sounding like a fucking garage band.
