@sbarini I'm from The Heights and can attest that the musical was pretty accurate...and absolutely brilliant. I really hope that the film keeps to the spirit of the play and my neighborhood. The Heights is the most unique place in all of the five boroughs.
Piragua is a form of shaved ice, but unlike American Snowcones, piragua is not shaved ice from a machine. It is scraped off a block of ice with a special tool (many references to the ice and scraping)
My favourite song in the play! I work at a snow cone stand and I'm opening my own next year. I bought one of the snow cone t-shirts and I'm going to start singing this song to my Latino customers!!
"Mr. Softee's trying to shut me down..." refers to the UNENDING presence of a Mr. Softee ice cream truck on every street corner.
Heck, you start from the Geo Washington Bridge and head south on Broadway and there seems to be one stationed on every street corner straight down to 137th!
@Arkady63 you're right. I was in New York for a week (during which time I saw "In the Heights"... it's such a fantastic musical!) and I don't even know how many Mr. Softee ice cream trucks and pretzel vendors I saw. xD
Yeah guys, it's like a shaved ice or a snow-cone. My mom grew up there and we visit every year so I would know. I crack up every time at the Mister Softee reference.
actually, lin-manuel miranda said that he wrote this song because he had no idea what he was going to do for vanessa's song and he was procrastinating and so he just started writing down words and the lyrics just came to him, and the song was too good not to put in the show.
lol it is a bit random, no clue wut it means, but we saw this musical and im pretty sure that they just use this as a costume changing song. did you notice that one song they'll have on and outfit, then this song will come on, and the next song they would have a different outfit on? thats what i think, but i don't know.
Woo! haha well i'm from venezuela and we do not use that word a lot...in fact i've heard this word in a cuban song!...but i don't really know it's meaning...
jajaja piragua es una vaso con hielo molido con sabores de frutas y demás- En EEUU siempre los ves con eso. Si mirás la serie glee, es lo que le tiran a los gleeks en la cara :) saludos desd Argentina!

An inside joke will now be explained:
"Mr. Softee's trying to shut me down..." refers to the UNENDING presence of a Mr. Softee ice cream truck on every street corner.
Heck, you start from the Geo Washington Bridge and head south on Broadway and there seems to be one stationed on every street corner straight down to 137th!
Btw, guess where I from...

You've got to be from The Heights to get that joke.
When I finally saw this musical and he says "Mr. Softee's trying to shut me down," I bust out laughing...and I was the only one...

Hey, the street food up here rules! One of those pastis (meat pies), re-fried with the chili sauce? A Tamale? A sliced mango with lemon juice?
And, of course a piragua de limon!
Fine dining at its highest level...
