PLEASE READ THIS, my grandad covers this song, he has been singing and playing guitar all his life, I really see something in him and im trying to get him to fame before he gets too old and his time is up, please like this and his videos on my channel :(
@frebus08 hey, hes actually pretty good :D as a music student at uni im surrounded by awesome singers and i think ur grand-dad is good :) hope he gets somewhere xx
Of all the versions of this song, always thought Steve's original was the best. For a little different Irish version, check out the Wee Amigos' Late Late Show version.
i wonder how Steve and this song came about? I guess its just like how you seem to go places in life you never expected and next thing you know its just an odd, yet cool experience. I dunno! Steve rocks soooo hard!
Man, did the live bands playing at the pubs we visited in Galway HATE this song being requested! Love it, and Galway, by the way, best side-trip I had while studying abroad in Sweden. Sad that I have to leave Sweden on January 4th, what a wild ride...
My guess is overexposure - I still love the song, but I live in the states where it is not really well known. I think if I lived in the UK or Ireland where it is overplayed by bad cover bands, football fans and commercials, I might come to hate it.
Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of my grampa and Scotland, I live in Jersey so on the off occasion when we go up to either Scotland or Ireland to visit my family it reminds me of my grandpa as he plays this on the mouth organ!
He has only done a little acting, and The Wire was first. He was also on David Simon's new show, Treme (Simon created The Wire.) It is in it's second season in the US, but I think it's now in the UK. He plays a similar character - a mentor to a younger musician who is the main character. Hi also had a bit part in one episode of Law and Order and a small part as a drug dealer in the movie Leaves of Grass. That's all I know, but I am a little obsessed with him.
@darlincommitme haha thanks..im from ireland and we have sky atlantic but never watched treme..and now i know david simon is involved too ill definatly watch it
Sorry, I was assuming you were in the UK because of the British spelling of programme, but just checked your page. I don't know if you can get Treme in Ireland. The show is about New Orleans recovering from hurricane Katrina, and pays a lot of attention to the music life of the city.
@darlincommitme I count the original as being a "version" of something if other people have done covers, which they have. I was thinking of Stewart Lee's parody/heartfelt rendition
The first definition of "version" is a variation on the original (according to Websters)... but in any case I assumed anyone who could mistake the lyrics of Steve's original for a parody probably didn't know the original, which was my main point. Sorry if that is a wrong assumption.
@darlincommitme haha, you broke out Webster's on me! The thing with that particular parody is that the first half is original lyrics and then the rest is changed around to reference stuff from his act. I found this song through Lee, but I've listened to both (versions? renditions? now I'm not sure what word to use) a bunch of times, usually one after the other, so they kind of run together in the middle. I thought the line I referenced was in the Earle version because he had problems with drugs.
Not really - I broke out Websters for myself. I realize the word can be used either way, but was checking if my sense of the primary meaning was right. I am a weirdo who thinks dictionaries are fun.
Use whatever word you like. I have only listened to Lee's once, but as someone old enough to remember vinyl records, I think the needle in the lyrics you quote is the needle on the arm of a turntable, not a drug reference. Steve was clean by the time he wrote this.
@darlincommitme Yeah, the needle is definitely at least a reference to the arm of a turn table, but it can work with drugs at the same time ("I stopped trying to fill whatever void in my life with drugs and tried to do it with music instead"). It's less of a drug reference than a reference to sobriety, really
@louise887 Louise, yir ma wee darling, FFS the Beatles suck, they always tell you the name of the song at the start , Help, Hey Jude . I wanna hold your hand, im like FFS let me guess the name!, anyone infuenced by the Beatles are the Beatles, Shane Mcgowan writes classy lyrics cause we all DONT live in a yellow submarine, music lyrics are about quality not QUANTITY!
@woodyfurball im sorry but i think ive just met the stupidest person ever. The Beatles were and are music legends! So what if they tell you the song in the title! Listen to any song from the Beatles and they make you feel all types of emotions. I cry at Yesterday and I smile at I want to hold your hand. So dont you dare say The Beatles suck cause you sir are wrong!
@woodyfurball what does my nationality have to do with my taste in music? nothing thats what! and if you say the beatles suck i know hell of a lot more about music than you do. you know you were wrong when you said the beatles suck so just shut up.
don't hate on me when i say this but the beatles only got good, after the white album. however i can say that if it wasn't for the beatles and bob dylan, musicians would never be allowed tyo write their own music. prior to the beatles getting control over their own writing music was written for musicians.
Granted I am pretty drunk, but I can't make heads or tails of the "deep" messages that gppceo has left a few down from me. On the plus side I have some good music to distract me.
The biggest problem with the Irish is they're 200+ years ahead of the Yanks in recognizing the errorsNglobal mess their neighbors created world-wide. Yanks are only today beginning to see what the British empire-financial and industrial-past, present and future, has done to the planet. Much as I do love many Brits, sadly our band's favorite song has become Trans by the Pogues. Tis no wonder the Irish drink heavily...you would too if you lived that close to London as Yanks are learning today.
3 pirates (sailors) started an irish band in San Francisco (along coast)-a music festival today-rock bands on stage-shy so we went down to a little beach road-played n tourists stopped-went downtown-tucked into a tight little alley with flowersNtrees in artsy Half Moon Bay-tourists stopped-first group- momN2 daughters-one with fire red hair fresh back from college in Galway Ireland, howling on the sidewalk when she passed the alleyNheard us playing this song...quite a day for all
I once met this beautiful redhead on my way to Galway from Derry. She was stunning! Frizzy red hair, beautiful clear blue eyes, and a tight sexy little tush. I got to talkin' to her, and turns out she was Italian- whad'ya know... an Italian redhead in Ireland. So, I asked to sit next to her so as not to shout or strain my neck. OMG she smelled AWFUL! She smelled like homeless people except without the smell of booze! Guess who I think of when I hear this song?
@lsnows I'd hug n love a girl who smelled like sh*t if her smileNpersonality shined like the sun. You can always wash the smell of a city off a human being, but its often difficult, sometimes impossible, to soak the spiritual qualities of a wonderful, soulful human being "INTO" a person with clean fingernails and perfect teeth. I've dated models and tramps and prefer a woman with a bit of grease on her nose who can change a spark pulg to a gal who requires a Porsche just to get a date.
IM OBSESSED WITH THISS! can't get it out my fucking head! even in my exams at school i'm quietly singing it loll. as long as this song exists, love can never die! <3
I had to come get my fix. The man I love just deployed, and he told me a long time ago that I reminded him of this song. :) I just needed to find a smile...and this song did it for me. Thank you so much for sharing. And I am VERY PROUD to be IRISH!

My hair is blond but my eyes are blue :) ... I'm not irish but I love this song crazy much.. just for this song I would to go to Ireland (somewhere south) and go to some pub and listen to it with a glass of a good beer (totally ok with a sexy male singer)...
My great-great grandma was born in Galway, Ireland she was a Galway girl <3 Makes me so proud to be part Irish I just love it! we got the best luck beautiful people! beautiful country. I need to leave so-cal to visit Galway! im getting a Irish tattoo :D
i've got a shamrock tattoo at the back of my neck and while doing this, i had this playing on my ipod. i did that for the guy i love, he's irish :) but we broke up because i had to come back to the UK. It doesnt matter, he was awesome. and he's always going to be the man i'll always love. ALWAYS. .. i love you :)
This is from a later album - Transcendental Blues - not Guitar Town. If all you have is Guitat Town, there is a lot of great Earle music you haven't heard.
I am a huge Earle fan, but to be honest I don't think he is a very good actor, especially in Leaves of Grass (though it may have been a directing choice, I also love Edward Norton, and even his acting seemed stilted.) He was good in The Wire, but he was essentially playing himself. Do look up his other music. You can stream most of his albums on his myspace page. I suggest starting with El Corozon and Train A Coming.
More Irish than I am anything else - listened to this song in a tiny cottage filled with about a hundred friends and relatives on a rainy night in galway- everyone danced and sang :L
What a fabulous song.

Is this a bonus track on a cd . I have Guitar town on cassette and I've never heard this .Great song .
HotRodSixString 10 months ago
@HotRodSixString No I just picked that album cover cause it looked good, it's off his album "Transcendental Blues" :)
Family1Guy1Is1Cool 9 months ago 2
@HotRodSixString
This is from a later album - Transcendental Blues - not Guitar Town. If all you have is Guitat Town, there is a lot of great Earle music you haven't heard.

@nilradem I'll bet . He's definitely talented . Did you check his acting out in 'Leaves Of Grass' . Watching him act was a blast .
HotRodSixString 9 months ago
@HotRodSixString
