Ive read some of the comments about institutions and their maxims about them, quite laughable. When institutions like the catholic church continues to abuse children, when your banks is sucking the blood out of your wallet and the goverment is asking to pay taxes. that's why we need institutions...property is theft.
Institutions are a necessary part of society. They are not perfect because people are not perfect but they are necessary. We do need to be our own person, so that when the institution goes wrong we can break away. Institutions are both a good thing and a bad. People tend to trust them too much. For example when a church abandons its beliefs and starts saying that sin is okay, that is a time not to follow the conventional wisdom of that institution. Time to stand against the flow.
@DrEinstein100 I agree. He's a talented guy but people on here are a bit too blindly appreciative of Del Toro. They think anyone who has a different opinion just doesn't "get it". Anarchy is all good to talk about when you have money, a comfortable life, security and time to ponder. I'd like to hear him say that in the middle of a riot, not while discussing movie themes. Institutions will never be perfect but we cant progress without them. Without organization and structure nothing gets done.
@existence88 "too blindly appreciative of del Toro." That's possible, but as already discussed, it might also be that some people are also taking what he says too literally. Indeed, as pointed out, he couldn't make his films without some form of structure. I think that institutions themselves can be good and bad, and del Toro ("all us freaks have is each other") must himself believe it at least partial. I think he's just being cautionary about any sort of blind faith. Peace.
Rebel? Meh. Genius? Pretty close. I mean, his idea of unconventional, anti-heroes is hardly new but he does a great job with the subject matter. He's has a wonderful sense of visualization but avoids heavy-handedness.
Well, Pan's Labirynth fooled some parents parents in taking their kids to see it thinking it was Narnia or Harry Potter.
And they were shocked, because this guy broke the beleif that the latest fantasy films are always for kids.
He's a rebel, because there's tons of people that thought this guy wasn't going to make it, but there he is, starting to work on the Hobbit, he's amazingly talented.
he is not a rebel dude, he just makes what he loves at any cost, not a rebel that goes where others not, people cosider him a rebel he is just pure genius a kid with many to play
Wow... my last comment is 3 years old hehe! I agree man, I think by making the films he loves he is authentic and honest, and that's what's important.
It just happens that what he loves goest greatly against a lot of established conventions, like structure
I bet Guillermo is a little more conservative than he thinks. He hates "structure?" "institutions?" He couldn't run a film-set without "structure" or a working "institution."
He's the boss, his creative vision, manipulation, dictatorial style, etc. The director (most often) has the final say.
I know he is talking about "oppressive" institutions right?
I think it comes down to perceptions. Pan's Labyrinth was quite "religious" to me. Well structured too.
His films are great. I just see a little kid in there scared of what his religion really means and wrestles against it. You see Catholic Mexican art clearly in his films. There's no escaping it. Yet morally/politically he's "...a little too liberal."
He said "structure in terms of of believing in institutions".. that means something like he should believe that whats there is there for always... in other words you cant change it. You are taking the word "structure" out of its sentence in your last line... while I guess you DO know what he ment.. thats plain mean :P. I do believe our race is almost entirely self repeating.. so I disagree with del toro also.
the thing i love and admire about Guillermo is that he has such firm beliefs and opinions about everything and wont change his mind. like about how he talked about when people tried to change things in pans labyrinth like setting, plots, or characters, and he says "this is what it is don't mess with it, don't fuck with it, don't try to change it into something that it isn't or make it happier".
Man, I love his voice. I could listen to him talk all day.

He says he hates structure. You need structure to tell a story. Pan's labyrinth was a biblical allegory, structure was his foundation.
Anthonmac 3 years ago
In many interviews he says that Pan's Labyrinth is "strictly pagan". So...you fail.
infiniteimpulse 3 years ago
You both fail. The structure he refers to is social. He clearly says that he's against institutions.
