I covered this song with my brother a few weeks ago. The video is on our youtube channel, we'd really really appreciate it if you take THREE minutes to just check it out! Thank you :)
I've reached a conundrum. I want to listen to this song, but to do so I have to first watch the advert for the woman in black, after having just seen the film. I don't want to put myself through that again.. but it's a REALLY good song.. what to do..
"Boys Boys that was a miiiighty fine a-pickin' and a-singin'. I'll tell you what, you come on in here and sign these papers here and I'm a gonna pay you ten dollars a piece."
@touchmytubs This is not country. This divine music is not in any way like the recordings of people getting on stage to melodically list things associated with their childhood without using any figurative language or creative lyrics while at the same time defining masculinity by their alcohol consumption, their ability to only view their surroundings through the eyes of a double-digit IQ mind, yearly deer killing rate, and the size of their non-commercial use pick-up truck. Sorry for the rant.
We just started watching this movie in Mythology! I couldn't help but looking up the song because it sounded familiar. But I have no idea where to place it. Hehe
Man of Constant Sorrow, a traditional American folk song first recorded by Dick Burnett, a blind fiddler from Kentucky. Was originally recorded by Burnett as "Farewell Song" printed in a Richard Burnett songbook in1913. An early version was recorded by Emry Arthur in1928. There is uncertainty whether Dick Burnett himself wrote the song. One claim is that it was sung by the Mackin clan in1888 in Ireland and that Cameron O'Mackin emigrated to Tennessee, brought the song with him, and performed it.
one of the best films . one of parody is crossroads with steve vay. this is a great journey of south. and one day i make this. thanks george, thanks john turturro for an amzing film. i love it. every year i see it,and make in future. that is south, that is blues, and there i want do die.
I LOVE this song, and this accoustic version in particular;it's rougher around the edges and more emotional, which I think is more in keeping with the lyrics(That being said,I DO love the other one as well!) Thanks for posting it!
@Breckengoure Bill Monroe did record it as did many artists over the years. The history of the song is a bit of a mystery as no oone has ever been named the original writer or artist. Regardless, it's an amazing song. This is by far my favorite version.
@s0up3rman I think the Stanley Brothers may have been first though I'm not positive. This is one of my favorite versions. I saw Allison Crouse & her band doing it on TV (Austin City Limits?) once and that even topped this one. This is a badass song with great guitar work.
I searched through all the comments, and have tried google; hate to ask but, who did this version? If I had to choose a song to play at my funerl, this would be it.
