This video depicts our 2009 growing season, which was the coolest summer we've ever experienced in Michigan. We credit the cool temps for the HUGE cabbage.
We don't use pesticides on the cabbage. When you harvest them you can soak the heads in cold salt water, just in case any bugs or worms are nesting in them. If you do have troubles with bugs or worms, I recommend Googling "natural pesticides" or "home remedies for garden pests." Best wishes for a successful garden this year!
I purchased a cabbage in a pot , the leaves are growing nice i see that its possibly growing the head. i want to keep up with it , this is my first time growing cabbage and need some helpful ideas
We're in Michigan. The harvest from this video came in July of 2009. In 2009 we had a wet spring and an unusually cool summer...and the cabbage thrived!
Thank you for your comments. Around the perimeter of the garden are simply Marigolds. My husband and I collect our seed heads from each previous year, dig a 1/4" trench around the border, and spread the seeds. We use French Marigolds and tall orange and yellow. I've been told that, if you cut across the stem without pulling the plant out, four mini cabbages will grow out of the stem. We will try that this year.
Very cool. We grew a garden this year for the first time and planted three cabbage plants. Was looking for how to harvest cabbage and found your video.
Question: What do you have planted around the perimeter of the garden? Is it some type of natural insect deterrent plants?
Instead of pulling up the cabbage try cutting it and then make a cut in the shape of a cross in the stem. Ina fewe weeks yoou will get a crop of four mini cabbage from the cut stem
I hope you have bunnies to take care of the outside leafs

Plant it in good soil, fertilize it, give it adequate water, and If you have a cool spring and summer it will thrive.

When I harvest my giant heads, I just twist off the head and leave the white core and in a week 5 little heads start forming. They are good,

imagine 1 acre of those things, selling ea for 1.50? 43k cabbages? 43,000 x 1.50 = 64,500
then subtract all expenses and theres your profit.
