UPDATE: I noticed that when the noise happened a silver band appears where the catalytic converter was bolted to the turbo - obviously it was an exhaust leak caused by strain from worn engine mounts. Months ago, I installed a great hi-flow cat from Labree in California. Believe me, this thing was beautifully hand-made. Anyway, I replaced the engine mounts at the same time, and I have been able to throttle thru turns and drive on bumpy roads ever since...without sounding like a diesel truck!
I've tried almost everything to find the exact point where it's leaking, but I'm just going to have to remove the air box when the engine's cold and disassemble the exhaust system. Hopefully it's just a gasket which I can replace, but I might have to take the leaking exhaust component to a shop to be re-welded. And at the same time, I'll go ahead and replace both engine mounts, the tranny mounts, and even the snub mount.
I replaced the torn vac line, but it's an exhaust leak, which sucks because the turbo doesn't have enough back pressure to boost. But what I've found is that my engine mounts have gone bad and that I'm thinking has put strain on the exhaust pipe welds. It'll go away after a while but whenever I throttle over bumpy road or while pulling through a turn, the exhaust leak blows open again.
I have the same thing with my audi, except i have a 93 90S. Sure its loud...ive kind of grown attached to the growl it has
