@Publik You're essentially right about the US DoD having originally been known as the US DoW, Dept of War, and that's what it's always essentially remained, about war and not defence. They should've maintained DoW as name, but I guess they strategically wanted to create deception by renaming it DoD.

I don't know if it's exactly accurate to say DoW was renamed to DoD, given the explanation Wikipedia provides for the creation of DoD ; but we can surely say that it's basically what happened..
