OH MY GOSH!!! I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR A LONG TIME. I WAS BORN IN 65 AND REMEMBER MY MOM PLAYING THIS ALBULM FOR US ALL THE TIME! IF YOU REMEMBER THERE WAS A STORY BEFORE EACH SONG. MY FAVORITE WAS FROGGY WENT A COURTIN AND THIS. AND YES, I REMEMBER IT BEING CHICKEN MY CHICKEN MY CRANEY CROW WENT TO THE WELL TO WASH MY TOE AND WHEN I GOT THERE THE WATER WAS LOW. ALSO IT WAS WHEN SHE LAUGHS SHE LAUGHS LIKE A CAT. ANYONE KNOW THE EXACT NAME OF THE ALBULM?

In 1958, we had the album this song first appeared on, "Burl Ives Sings Songs for All Ages." The lyrics were printed on the back cover. The word CREAMY should be CRANEY.
In addition, in the book Bearing Witness- Memories of Arkansas Slavery, former slave Dinah Perry (78 yrs old in 1930) described a song from a game she played as a child. The verse went :
When I was a child (of the 60's), I had Burl Ives' "Lollipop Tree" in my collection of LP's. This was the second selection on side 1. I loved all of the songs on this album and believe that I wore the grooves out as I got older!
I have the original "6-eye" red label Columbia Lp (with all the colorful toys on the album cover) and I always looked forward to this song playing at the end of side one. I think many of the songs on this album have made it to CD reissues but I don't know if "Old Witch Old Witch" was one of them. Thanks for posting!
I loved this song when I was a little boy in the early 1950's. This is the first time I've heard it in many, many years. Burl Ives had a wonderful voice.

When I come back chicken was gone.
