Both cello concertos are my favourite for the instrument - and amongst the best for any instrument (I'm a pianist). But I'm more fascinated by the second and have returned to it regularly over the past 15 years or so since I first got to know it. Definitely needs to be played more regularly...
Indeed please load up more of this genius. he is the only muscian that makes me cry when he plays. Will there ever be another like Mila. Mila, is seems truly met the divine in his love of music
there are many of these pieces: "sacre du printemps by stravinsky, pieces by prokoviev. all of them totally mad. but so fascinating. very dark. this music touches something deep inside you, you don't know what it is, but it thrills and fascinates you very strangely. once heard a version with sol gabetta playing cello, that was almost emotionally disturbing... sir simon rattle once said about "sacre du printemps": "it's a piece that rises from the earth and knocks you down". that's the very thing
@unblackcellofreak777 Neat. When my metal loving friends get curious about classical music (cuz I play cello) I make them listen to Shostakovich first. Works every time. :D
Remarkable how the audience keeps coughing and sneezing throughout the whole concert, while I never see rostropovich stopping because he has to cough..
The greatest of all time!! Is this video from DVR or a tape/DVD? I know there are these classic performance programs on television. Just wondering if that is where this was from.

This surpasses the 1st concerto by a long way, it reeks of death and despair, I love it.

What a wonder to have this video! Is it the premiere?
lynnharrell 11 months ago 3
@lynnharrell Yes. Mr. Harrell. This is the premiere film in 1966, with Yevgeny Svetlanov at Moscow Conservatoire.

I listen to an awful lot of black metal, and this is way darker and more disturbing! Horns up.

I've always prefered this cello concerto than the concerto No. 1for some reason which is beyond me... anyway shostakovich is wonderful

It;s a pity, this is a great concerto but rarely performed, overshadowed by the first concerto.

What a bow, what a sound ...
All bow is intense and sound. Anywhere he attacks, sound is crystal clear

I like his sound for this concerto....deep yet clear

Excuse my ignorance, but is this the video of the premiere for this Cello concerto dated back 1966?
If so, what a historical document you have got!
Thanks for posting it!
