So lets tear down Yankee Stadium, and to add insult to injury leave no trace of it and nothing to notate or mark the spot where Lou made this speech and where so many other historic moments happened. At this so called Heritage Park there is NOTHING to remind you that a stadium was ever there much less Yankee Stadium, the greatest stadium ever. How can these corporate goons and politicians throw away history! This is a slap in the face to all of the great Yankees and generations of Yankee fans.

I have his t-shirt and hat i did a report on him and i got a good mark thx to him even he is gone he never left he speech, memory, etc even know i'm a teen im doing what ever i can help fine a cure for ALS. like he said "today i considered my self the luckiest man on the face of earth" still is right?
im not a yankee fan. but i have alot of respect for the iron horse.the babe. joe dimaggio and roger maris. those players are not made often and thanks to them baseball is great i love this game thank you hall of famers....
I'd say this speech and Jim Valvano's ESPY speech are the best sports speeches of all time. Both are great examples of handling the hard times with dignity.
Just think; If someone like A-Rod got ALS everyone would be celebrating. Just goes to show how low the Yankees have gone now in terms of character. Utter self absorbed shitbags on that team.
Falling ill when he did cost him 500 home runs (493), 2,000 RBIs (1,995), and 3,000 hits (2,721). But as long as there is baseball, Lou Gehrig will be remembered. Derek Jeter just passed him as the Yankees' all-time hits leader. I think Lou would be just fine with who it is who's done it, and how he's done it.

with lou gehrig's disease already known to exist, his parents should have named him pete,or tony. To name your son lou Gehrig is almost begging god to give him lou gehrig's disease. Yankees suck. Go Red Sox
Heart warming to hear this from a young fan ! My Grandfather, RIP, had the privilege of seeing the "Iron Horse' play many times back in the 20's/30's. He constantly raved about Lou's tremendous talent but considered him to be even more impressive as a human being. A hero to me, and many other Baseball fans, despite the fact that I am a die hard, lifetime Red Sox fan!
I know most of what I know about Gehrig because of a great player by the name of Cal Ripken. Just a couple of guys who showed up for work everyday..... and played some darn good baseball.
Absolutely beautiful speech. Puts things in perspective doesn't it? To go in front of those fans and deliver that message when you know you're dying really takes fortitude. RIP Lou
Very moving indeed. How is it that Lou Gehrig can say so much with so few words when the George Bush's of this world say so little with so many words?
i have been to were his grave is and you just get that feeling that he is around watching its going to be a sad day when everone has to watch derek jeter pass him on all time hits list
Awesome speech. I'm only 25, but a large reason I've known this speech and loved it for so long is because well for some reason or another when you beat a level in the game Return Fire for the Playstation this speech plays.
Also Homer parodied this speech too in the Dancin' Homer episode when the Simpsons were still relevant and funny.
Not to disrespect Lou by making this a Simpsons discussion, but I am as long term a Simpsons fan as there is and you have to lay off. Granted, 2003-2005 was not very good. But since, they have gotten much better. Will they top the early-mid 90's stuff? No, that's classic stuff. But, the new stuff is pretty good. Just because it's not in your face and completely insane and off the edge like Family Guy it instantly becomes irrelevant and no good? Family Guy WISHES it was The Simpsons! haha!
That was just kind of a throw-a-way comment I put in at the end. While I do stand by it, I wasn't expecting to start a conversation over it.
The problem with the Simpsons sorta started happening when Homer just got a new job every week and it started to infact get too "off the edge and insane." Season 9/10 were the last seasons I could consider any good. Anyways that is about all I have to say about that.
No one can really understand why anyone would say "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth" unless you have really played baseball.
He is saying that hes the luckiest man b/c he has lived a great life an to say ur the luckiest man when u kno ur dying is simply anaming R.I.P. Lue Gehrig
Wrong, actually those words he spoke were because during his speech that day a kid that he had met some yeare earlier was stricken with polio and could not walk showed up on the field prior to the beginning of his speech walking with the help of braces. That moved him and inspired him to say the words he did.
Actually Gehrig did kno he was dying and im not saying the speech was b/c of that im just saying that to say ur the luckiest man ... when u know ur gonna pass is amazing
great baseball legend, that must have been such an emotional speech for him as millions of people were probobly watching on t.v and the 50000 that were their
I was never a baseball fan but I know who this great man was!

This, in my book, is easily the best moment in baseball hostory.
It's very moving.
I'm only 15, but I've worn number 4 on the back of my jersey since t-ball, in honor of this man.
And lay off the Simpsons, seriously.
