I am truly sorry but the fact now is that England & the USA are not what James Burke describes all this fluff is now past and has been replaced with politically correct submittion to Islamic terrorists , "we" do not pass along what we know but rather the state passes along propoganda to youth thru brainwashing and lies - democracy is being replaced by communism liberty is replaced by islamo-fascisim - England now bows the knee to Moslem immagrants - USA now is intolerant of Christianity
Representative democracy, not exactly a good idea. Rather destructive really. It's one of those instances of religious thinking trumping rationality, really.
Neu. "Democracy", of the type predominantly institutionalized in the modern world, is based on the same psychological and intellectual basis as religion.
I hate to imagine what the world would have been without Science. Wait a minute there was a time when religion rather than Science ruled the West.....it is called the dark ages!! :)
There are always "rebels" and the so-called "dark ages" is no exception. In that case, the rebels were a breakaway sect (Cistercians) who were, amongst other things, responsible for a "medieval industrial revolution" in the 13th century. They were Benedictines but following a more literal interpretation of his teachings; doing away with ritual and luxury and reviving Roman technology from ancient relics thus causing the aforementioned "revolution".
@JamesBurkeWeb hmm i thought the suppression of the English monasteries was the reason for getting out of ^dark ages^ and that was done by Henry VIII in england, it was devastating for cistercians also im sure, they didnt want it they lost all the lands and welth and there iron casting business,, they were definetly not the guardians of science and progress of that time they were still just christians and wanted same thing as other christians do
@hmammoth - Say what? I really hope you are not that ignorant of what the "dark ages" were. If you are, then Bronowski, Burke, and Sagan wasted a lot of time.
Ah, Thales. Had no idea it was pronounced that way.

I needn't go on about the quality of their programming... :P
EDIT: Actually, it's the History Channel I'm really mad at here.

Theocracy better than Democracy? Is that what you're espousing?

So Iran's gov't is no different than the USA's?
Bondianwolf 2 years ago
Neu, both systems are predicated on the same underlying psychology though.
Iran is a representative democracy and theocracy I think. It's been a while since I looked at it.

as if a 51% majority vs. 49% minority is a better alternative. thats called mob rule and it doesn't work

It would be nice if more people appreciated rational thinking.
Thornfox 2 years ago 6
Do you mean appreciate the inherent value of rational thinking? or to appreciate, in full, what rationalist thinking has engendered over the years?

Both!
