I'm honestly not sure why they were not as relighable. I'm sure you could ask the question to different people and get a different answer each time. These days though, GE has em beat hands down; though I still preferr to railfan a EMD.

My first guess is because the older GE's were not nearly as relighable as their EMD counterparts.
