  • The guitar is so deceiving in this one, uplifting even, a stark contrast to the lyrics.

I love your Maid freed from the gallows version, could you give me the tab for that version or post the chords?

Hope that isn't too much trouble, I simply can't find them anywhere else.

  • @Doca As it says in the information panel above, lyrics and chords of all my songs can be found on my website (see link above). Click on "My Folk Songs", then "The Child Ballads" and you'll find it in numerical order - No. 95. The lyrics of all the versions I sing are there. Just click on the correct title and you'll find it.

  • interesting version...

  • This is the fifth of several versions I know. Not my favourite one, though.

  • Such a *G*R*E*A*T* rendition!

    Crowned with stars... :)

    All the best

  • Thanks for your beautiful video response, Gari. You do it very well.

  • I always enjoy your renditions, but I must admit that I am partial to the Smothers Brothers' version of this piece: "Hangman, hangman, slack your rope; Slack it for awh...achhhhh!"

  • It's certainly not as repetitive as all the other versions!

  • Great SONG THANKS FOr Sharing!

  • Thanks. I prefer the other versions though.

  • Wounderful raymond like aways dear. :)

    5 stars

  • Thanks, Jeana.

  • This being the fifth version you have posted, I admire your comprehensive knowledge and presentation. ;)

In any case, I always enjoy your extensive comments concerning the history and background of the songs you post.

  • Thanks for your feedback.

  • A fine bouncy version, but the versions Leadbelly and Odetta did remain my favorites.

  • Mine too, especially Odetta's. One of my variations is basically a cover of her rendition.

  • excellent performance Raymond

    i hope all is well!

  • Thanks, Dan. All is well.

  • a very beautiful song Raymond. thanks so much

  • Merci, Jean.

  • 9 songs to go! Exciting!

  • Thanks for watching.

  • Love it!

  • Thanks, Jan.

  • Greetings

    Raymond...

This is indeed a fine example of the folk song process working full-throttle. I find it refreshing how so versions had been derived of and from this simple little ditty. Here in your direct,no frills rendition, you've managed to express this beloved old chestnut with all of the directness and simplicity that certainly exhibits it in the very best light.

  • I think I collect this song the way you collect "Stewball." I put together a tape many years ago with about twenty recordings of it.

  • I really love your music, its such a shame that theres only 8 songs left. You should play some old christmas songs, that would be great :)

  • I may do a couple more, but I already have a playlist of 29 Christmas songs: /view_play_list?p=6A87F72E113CE495

  • *Standing ovation!*

  • Thank you.
