  • its just a shame that the South African writer of this song died a broke old man without ever having received any royalties from this song

  • @Xhosashinobi He's not the only artist that got screwed. Unfortunately it happens often, even to this day!

  • @Xhosashinobi his two daughters did!

  • @Xhosashinobi he didnt "write" this song. the tokens sort-of stole the rhythm from an old african folk song in whichone of the original "writers" hummed a melody similar to the chorus of this song

  • @FuckinHolidaZe No, Mbube aka Lion, was written by Solomon Linda in the 1920's. I'm Southern African, I should know as my grandparents were alive at that time.

  • @doryheartsmakeup He didn't actually write any lyrics. He may have written the instrumental part, but if you listen to the song they just hum the whole time.

  • @Xhosashinobi who gives a fuck about him, just enjoy the song

  • @hiphoponeworld

No need to get hostile queer, his comment makes a lot more sense than a pointless argument on a random YouTube video. If something his/her comment SHOULD be there.

  • @Xhosashinobi That's terrible!!!! Are you sure? I wonder if there are any descendants that can claim royalties!!!!

  • @Xhosashinobi isn't it. :( I feel sooooooooooooooo sad about that. I don't really. I'm just a massive cunt.

  • @Xhosashinobi To be fair, the "original" is based on a Zulu folk song and was covered by many groups before the Tokens did it. Also, writer Solomon Linda died just after this version came out, so he wouldn't have had time to enjoy any royalties that were coming to him. Having said that, you're absolutely right! Linda deserves credit for for this amazing song!

  • this is stuck in my head in this moments lol

  • guy with glasses looks like drew carrey

  • I LOVE 50'S MUSIC LOVE IT

  • this was the very first record (45 rpm)i ever bought-i was about ten years old--had to walk home from the record store 6-7 miles in the summer in San Antonio--the record had MELTED by the time i got home--I STILL LOVE IT--there is just something very special about this african folk song--like a lullaby.

(wait for suspense to build, because you obviously couldn't think of this yourself) .......... Don't listen to it? :O Spread your hate and idiocy elsewhere. Mkaythnx :D

  • @XxSheaboyxX youre right about thirdgen83, but i think you misunderstood mathew lol. he said it was THE shit, not shit. "The shit" means that its awesome haha

  • @366jacob you misunderstood him. he said it was "the shit" not "shit." "the shit" means that its awesome.

  • @366jacob ease up he said its the shit ok which means its a good song but if he said its shit i would have taken your side against him but he said nothing wrong..

  • hey thirden83 if you have a problem with this song song being gay why don't you go fuck yourself you stupid person.

  • All I can say is that they dragged that big blonde opera singer with the pointy hat into the studio in Africa and this doo wop group was there and they got some local drummers, and ....wow.

  • This song is the SHIT

  • This song is GAY..

  • @MalphRalphThe and what conversion may you be talking about? perhaps the lion king? now which version might be terrible?

  • @MalphRalphThe

    what

  • After years of considering myaelf an afficianado in 1960;s music I played this song to a friend who asked me who was doing rhe background voice? As a lover of the song, I always thought that it was a member of the group. I now find that it is Anita Darian., a quite renowned Opera singer! What a coup!! It makes me appreciate the song all the more.

  • I seem to be stuck in a time warp, but at 70 I still love these songs from the early 60s evoking happy memories. Thanks for the post
