  • Beautiful Song. My parents from Kerry played this song for us kids. I just heard it now as I sit in our apartment. There must be an Irish music aficianado somewhere out there in Astoria, Queens, NY

  • @Supernova1095 Ah, there's a few of us in The Bronx, too. And in the San Francisco area. I grew up with this one in the Bronx and Manhattan. My Uncle loved this one, as did we all. My mother's family was from Limerick and grew up around the time this was happening. Another Uncle was from Kerry and knew the fellows from Knockanure.

  • @Supernova1095 Where about? My family is from Glin,County Limerick and I have many relatives in Kerry,Tarbert,Listowel and Ballybunnion. We listened to this as kids in the Bronx,as well.Up the field!

  • This is a lovely version of this song.

  • you can just picture the scene he describes

  • When i was a kid my great grandpa put a bunch of old Irish songs on a tape for my dad....we used to play the tape all the time....and i would always replay this song...we lost it right after he died and couldn't find this song for years... i could remember all the words but could never find the song.....thanks for putting this up.

  • The mans a legend in my eyes, when he sings he puts as much heart into the song as he did the first song he ever sang, hope to hear you sing again pat.your a fogotton gem.

  • What's funny is that the picture used for this video (and many others featuring the song) is that they look almost NOTHING like what Shanagolden really looks like. It's a small village in between some low hills with the nearest mountains being miles away. The village has changed over the years, and while it is still quite beautiful, it now features a huge and almost ugly housing-estate situated in it's outskirts. Truely, this song has long had little to do with the actual village.

  • @TheMagicBrick I live in shanagolden. you got it exactly right

  • @dermotnoonan5 I live there too.

  • Beautiful song, I love Peggy Sweeney's version, but Paddy Day is great too, he has a lovey voice.

  • I really like this song!

I have even written it down , with notes, chords and guitar tabs... If you're interested, you can send me a message, and I can send you the pdf.

  • hauntingly beautiful and beautifully haungting; movingly inspiring and inspiringly moving.

    Love Isish songs.

  • So far, this is my favorite rendition of Shanagolden.

Very sincere, very simple, without unnecessary emphasis, yet efficient and heartfelt.

  • Thanks for this and your wonderful site. My father in law used to sing this in the pub after a few small ones, God rest him. Brought a tear to my eyes. Some great old tunes bringing back happy memories.Health and happiness to you.

  • I absolutely adore this song.......

does anyone knoew where I can download it from?

  • Beautiful. There are a lot of Irish songs or melodies that I find very moving, haunting and lovely.

  • Lovely tune. Thanks for posting.

  • this song made me teary eyed when i first heard it, its so beautiful and he sings with such heart...

    AMAZING

    thank you for posting it!

  • (My arems then)

He sings with his beautiful accent.

I don't think this could be sung better. Its wonderful.

  • Various songs with this melody. What about Wild Mountain Thyme. What is really its origin?

  • I live in Shanagolden - The songs about a woman who's son or husband has died (I think fighting the english) and is buried shanagolden

  • well said ashfly

  • Peggy Sweeny's version is certainly lovely, and it is a woman speaking in the song, yet I give this one by Paddy Day the edge.

There's a cutting poignancy to it.

  • FANTASTIC*****

  • Awesome song!!

  • MAN, THAT WAS LOVELY.

  • Sorry, no disrespect to Peggy Sweeney, but no one can sing sing this like Paddy.

CATALPA, again thank you for posting.

  • this is a beautiful song x

  • this was the first rendition that i heard and i think its the best sutch a haunting song

  • peggy sweeney sings a better version and was asked specifily to make the recording by sean mccarthy himself on his death bed....

  • What version does Peggy sing ? this is the only version I know of.

  • the original version.... and she has a much better voice too.... sean mccarthy is the man who wroet the song.... she has sang his songs for the last 30 year.... she knows all about the history of the songs and has a dvd to show places and footage of sean himself...

  • I look forward to hearing the original version, when will you have it posted,

I have given credit to Sean McCarthy at the start of the video and comments top right.

As for a better voice, well , everybody sings differently and it's a matter of choice.

Not much wrong with Paddy's version here though.

    Up Tipperary

  • when you hear her you'll know what i mean by better.....

she has 7 cds & 3 dvds out if you want to look her up or listen to any of the local radios ....shes quite popular in parts of tipp... been on a few radio show too up there....

I love tipp too been there lots.... great county

  • @sadieinkerry This is the version I know from childhood. My Uncle Maurice's favorite.I think of him as I listen to it.Tears in my eyes.Hope you're listening with Aunt Nora.My family is from Glin,County Limerick. They fought the brits and their black & tans.Fought for their country.God bless them and all brave Irish men & womaen who made the sacrifice.

  • Margo sings this song beautifully.

    ERIN GO BRAGH.

  • Lovely! I know this tune as "The Riddle Song," and sang it to my children. It's wonderful to hear the original sung so beautifully.

  • We do know of some in our family that came over to Illinois about the same time as you had mentioned, and they are still in contact with us, their name is predominantly Lawler now, but as far as the specific people you had mentioned going over (to America), someone in my family would know, but I just wouldn't.

I do know though that there is ourselves, and one other family of Brouders in Athea itself.

Again, I'm sorry to hear your experiencing the recent loss of your mother. All the best to yu

  • I'm sorry to hear your mother just passed, but thank you for contacting me, it's always nice to hear of more Brouders.

My name is Neil Brouder, I'm definitely not of those that came to America in the 1890's, as my dad is from Athea, about 10miles from Balyhahill.

  • merci Catalpa very nice song !

  • This is my favorite song of all time, my Dad is from a nearby town in Limerick

and I truly feel the best version of this song I ever heard was by my sister Corina at a live performance on the harp in NY about 6 years ago

but, it's always good, and Pady sounds good here too

  • My mother has just died and we found amongst her things a copy of the song Shangolden. I just wonder? She was from Ballyhahill, the next village to Shanagolden her maiden name was Brouder. Her father's sisters Bridget and Catherine (Katie) and brother Michael all immigrated to the States in the 1890s and virtually disappeared. We have traced them on the boats and until the 1930s census but then can find nothing. Your signature brouderskins ade me wonder.

    Julia H.

  • Don't know iof any female singers recorded this beauty , the singer here is Paddy Day , an Irish singer from the 60's.

  • @catalpa it might be done but never matched, such a treasure.

  • @catalpa This is the version I know from childhood. This was my Uncle Maurice's favorite.I think of him when I hear it.

  • Beatiful,is this recorded by a female singer?

  • No this is recorded by Paddy Day who's impossible to get your hands on now!

  • Yes by Margo O Donnell (daniels Sister / mother)

  • upthra1916, Thank you I'v just found it on lime wire,Thanks again.

  • Great track and a great album I got left this album by my uncle he bought it in the early 70's, but I think you'll find it's Paddy Day not Brian.

  • powerful,they don't them like this anymore

  • Powerful rebel love song, sung to the tune of 'the twelfth of never' I think.I prefer Sean Carthy's own version on his recording.

  • First song I learnt long ago at age 10

  • beautiful, craving more, so very haunting

    tears welling, so powerful
