@DeathAngelHRA I was in a video chat with some friends and I was trying to make sure the volume was good for the recording while not being too loud in my friends' head sets.
well, for one thing it's spelled "volume", and for the maker of this vid don't film a bbc owned show, yes bbc, not discovery. for one thing it's not legal. and two, it's bad quality.
Have you seen "2012" yet? Not real obviously (not yet LOL). Pretty cool Tsunamis there, big enough to almost reach the top of Mount Everest! The Whitehouse scene with the Tsunami is pretty sweet too!
there was a mega one to hit washington back in the 1700's . the indians called it thunderbird. Now that the earth has gone into Post Glacial Rebound effect, there coming. Scott (BUG)
fireeagle and hyperchief you guys are stupid. The tsunami was 500 metres high out of the water not above the sea bed because that means the tsunami on boxing day was 10 metres above the sea be if it was it would be under the water because they measure all tsunamis in the same way.
yeah exactly!!! nobody else understands that but you and me i guess. the SPLASH was the only part of the whole thing that was have a kilometer. the wave was 490 feet.
one day they say that theres gonna be a mega tsunami so big that it could already have travled to the heartland of the us i think its pretty scary the whole u.s.a. will be covered by you know what tsunami damage and no survivors except a few i mean come on who said the at the answer is the discovery channel they said that valcaoes formed the earth that it so not true i mean everybody know god created the heavens and earth duh read the bible youll here it for shure from there its an awesome book
We cant run when nature hits us with her full force...damn scary!
If Anak Krakatoa (krakatau) erupts as it's father had in 1883, the whole world would be fucked inside out. Major earthquakes, Super tsunamis, climate change and famine would only be some of the catastrophes felt WORLDWIDE!
I have a job you worthless twit. I enjoy researching and sharing my opinion...unlike some lazy troll who verbally abuses for pleasure. Jerk off some more and let people speak of their opinions, idiot.
You clearly don't know anything about geology, chemistry, or physics, let alone have any common sense. You do research? I would bet that mean's you've read Wikipedia at best, and sucked off a homeless person holding a "The End is Nigh" sign at worst (probably did the latter). How come the scientific community isn't up in arms if we are infact, as you so elegantly put it, going to be "fucked inside out"? Oh that's right, because you're full of shit, QED, moron.
Actually darling, I work at a seismology centre and volunteer around the world to help victims of a catastrophic event. what do u do? Besides ofcourse, starting arguments over the Internet...? You're not even worth my time and I refuse to argue with a no brained individual.
the wave at lituya bay was NOT 1720 feet high. the SPLASH was 1720 feet high. the wave itself was about 400 feet, which is still the largest wave in recoreded history.
they say the tsunami 2004 thailand was distructive, but the footage i saw water wasnt high as i thougth it'll be, saying distructive does it mean the water level or the death toll
Claiming the wave was 1720 ft (half a kilometer) is just ridiculous. If the wave would have been that high, it would have literally exterminated half of Alaska. It is said the wave rinsed away vegetation and small trees as high as 1720 ft up land, but that doesn't mean the actual WAVE was as high. It was the SPLASH that reached 1720 up land, but that's an entirely different thing.
yeah, noneless is the truth. the length is not that big as the high (limited by the bay itself), so the wave could not have propagated so much as exterminated alaska or something. but it had ripped of much of the bay shores... leaving only the bedrock. fuck... thats massive :)
the guy said why did we not think of this before... the awser is that scintist are smart but sometimes do lack a thing called commen sence (sometimes)
Hey liquidstl, I don't know where your reply to me has disappeared to, but I will concede to your point of the wave being higher than any currently standing skyscraper. Since skyscraper is defined as a tall, continuously habitable building, neither the Ostankino nor CN Tower would precisely fall under this definition, and since the Burj Dubai is not yet complete, the wave was indeed taller than the tallest standing continuously habitable building, the Taipei 101. You are correct.
The taipei 101 is 509 m tall to the top of the spire, or 1670 ft. While the Sears tower in Chicago is only 442 m to its roof, the tallest antenna reaches 527m or 1730 ft. The initial amplitude of the Lituya wave was 524 m or 1720 ft, and while taller than any current office tower, both the CN Tower in Toronto at 553 m and the Ostankino Tower in Moscow at 540 m surpass the wave, not to mention the unfinished Burj Dubai, which is currently over 630 m tall.
not to downplay the size of the wave, it's fooking huge. But it only got that high because there was only a narrow channel for it to move through, and consequently the area damaged by such an enormous wave would be limited. Nothing short of an asteroid stiking the ocean would produce something that big over a large area, and if that happened, a megatsunami would probably cause a fraction of the subsequent loss of life. Most would die in the "nuclear winter" that would follow the impact.
Similar events took place in Norway in 1905 and 1936 in a place called Loen. In both events, a lot of people were killed. The intitial splash was never measured, as it was in Lituya, but the waves following the splash were probably similar in size.
The place were this happened is called Lituya Bay, not Latulla Bay and the measured height of the initial splash was 1720 ft (524 m). After the first splash, the wave height was significantly lower, as it moved towards the sea, but high enough to lift that boat high over the tree-tops. If you google "Lituya Bay" you will find a lot of info about this event back in 1958.
Yep, I saw that interview, too. He had his young son aboard, too (eek), and was pretty much resigned to being killed when he saw it coming, so he steered to meet it bough-on. Ended up being lifted on top of it all the way inland and was dropped off in the trees!
Most people don't know about it because AK is so unpopulated, so there wasn't any damage and little loss of life. Most people also don't know the largest quake in North American history hit there in 1962, with tsunamis following.
I think i saw that on discovery channel. Its crazy man. They say that this valcano will calapse into the ocean and will be a disaster for cities on the coast of the alantic ocean. Such as miami

ii`m sorry but how tsunamis are measured?
the height is measured ABOVE THE SEA?
or its measured from the bottom?
KNIGHTCleric 2 years ago
above
sonnavabich 2 years ago
@KNIGHTCleric I'm pretty sure Tsunamis are ABOVE the sea. If it was below, then I don't think it could do anything.
CaptainCrunch4Me 2 years ago
well i think even below could do serious destruction
as you can see-when Tsunami is approaching-its NOT ONLY water above the sea-a great force of water is concetrated from the bottom
thats the main answer to the question why Tsunamis spread to a great distance even after they reach shore
coz of underwater force
so even 50 metre high tsunami(measured above) could spread 500+metres distance
KNIGHTCleric 2 years ago
It was 720 feet tall their was land scraped off at that height well away from the splash. The Fjord amplified the height.

only powerful hydrolic action can do that. More than splash, much more.
