  • Very informative for amateur photograpgets, thank u very much sir

  • Thanks for the nice words. Please subscribe to this channel and share it with others!

  • yet none of these pictures are really great.

  • Dear Turgore, I have to agree with you. I was taking pictures for examples, when never lends itself to the best shots with parameters I am trying to explain. The T1i camera was new and If I had it longer, I would have taken some. My focus was on the control or explanation of the feature so I rattles off shots using what I was trying to explain. Like texting while driving, You never do either great and it is dangerous. See my other videos that don't deal with features for better pictures.

  • wow thank you for the free tips i really appreciate it. it's so much easier learning from you then just reading a tiny book :) you got a sub :)

  • Thanks Great!!

  • Great, useful info. Thanks!

  • Thanks all for the kind words..

  • Thank you for the wonderful tips! Very helpful and so much appreciated

  • Got my too and to mixed up there. Kinda like my iso and shutter speed. Cheers again.

  • Thanks for the vid. A couple neat everyday situation tips that I tend to have forgotten whilst trying too learn to much technical stuff when clearly I'm a beginner. Cheers

  • Lol this guys sucks.

  • Ok you found me out. I am that guy and I must say I have to agree with you. There are much better people out there than me at photography. and I stutter sometime with my words and dont alsways explain things so well. If you want to see some other artistic work go to this guys site his name is. THATONESCREAMER . He is a singer and gets across the message of song though his poerverful yet heavy vocals. Check out his songs.

  • @THATONESCREAMER i saw what you do, and you DO suck... kid, besides, you look like a mexican Justin Bieber!

  • @UNDERLANDSOUNDS LOOOOOOOOOOL you're just jelly

  • Instead of using the electronic tweaks, you're better of learning something about light, exposure, metering, etc...

Oh boy, why am I writing this? Forget it, do as this guy tells you, learn how to push the buttons of your expensive gadget. The only problem might be, that other people, who are willing to learn make the better shots.

But hey, every Uncle bob can do a wedding shoot, right?

  • "All lies and jest, still, a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."- You have disregarded the others I think, Please watch my 61 techniques for filmmaking, many others under jonvideo. I have 135 videos for free up here Including one when I was teaching at 26 years old. Im 48. I have always been a big proponet of light, exposure etc. you just have not watched my other videos. They are FREE! I have always said technique is #`1!

  • @jonvideo You know how much I hate it, when people start their messages with part of a song lyric to get their point across? I guess you don't... but paraphrasing is easy, right?

And... What do your 61 tips about filmmaking have to do with a photography tip that I think sucks? Your age and that you we're teaching at 26... Wow, now i'm impressed... Don't blow your own horn so much.

To paraphrase: 'Those who can do, do. Those who can't do, teach.'

  • Hi- I used the quote cause, Like me, I see you are a simon &garfunkle fan. You are right paraphrasing is easy. I don't know answer to your question about a sucky photo tip. I am sorry form mentioning the 26 yr thing. I have survived 5 rounds of chemotherapy (since age 29) and am going into remission now (again!) and am living pretty normal and raising my two boys. That brings me true joy. I'd love to talk to you via phone as Im sure we r more a like than you think. Keep in touch - John

  • Oh, the 61 tips for filmmaking deal with technique rather than the buttons or electronic tweets on the camera. They are universal items that directors use no matter what the camera they are using. I don't know how to put the link here in the comments, but you can type in 61 techniques film making in the youtube search and it will come up. Watch the 10 minute movie (the kindness of others ) first (there is a link to it on the 61 techniques video) .

  • It is true that the medication (prednisone , rituxan and azathioprine ) has weakened my leg muscles so I can't do what I used to do. So I can't , I so teach. Still some people teach better than I do. But on youtube , the teaching is free, so you have lost nothing but time. If I have wasted your time and its worth money. no joke, call me and I will send you a small check ((10-20 bucks max) I want to make sure I don't anger anyone so i think that is a fair way to be equal to all.

  • You may want to ge the t2i made easy at our website elitevideo com It shows the ways to do all these things in depth. Also the T1i is very similar to the T2i.

  • how i do this with t2i?

  • don't forget polarizing filters to cut though the haze in very bright conditions.

sometimes polarizing filters can also work in lows light for long exposures on a tripod.

  • all the pictures on here sucked though..

  • I think you are doing well with the exposure buttons- but I think you need to pay more attention to the white balance. Is it just me? It seems you know so much about the subject, but the photos are lacking. Also to improve exposure in shadows, I use flash- but off camera so it's not straight on. It looks better, more natural- to me, instead of straight on from the camera.

  • very good video.............thanks for the tips

  • Amazing thank you for helping us out, and for your time!

  • Thank you very kind of you to take time to help others!!!

  • HE IS A VERY SLOPPY FUCKER GO BACK TO SCHOOL CRAZY FUCKER

  • Nice tips indeed. Thanks.

  • Wow thats really a good tips

  • Do not you think that in the case of the hut would be better to use flash function

TTL to compensate for the lack of light without overexposing the sky increasing

compensation manually, as you did in this instance?

  • Comment removed

  • @021311 RTFM

  • Thanks for sharing .only for people like you it would cost a fortune in classes so on behalf of all the budding photographers like me a hugh THANK YOU!!

  • I don't know why I'm watching this when I don't even have enough money to buy it ! -_-

  • Well, at least the tips are free and can be done with many other cameras too.

  • @do95070 knowledge will stay.. unlike money :\ keep saving! im with you

  • @do95070 Don't worry, I've wanted one for years! But now, I've finally got one on sale on Amazon. IM SO HAPPY :)

  • dude dont touch the exposure compensation go in to manual and change the shutter speed!!! :))

  • Great stuff thanks

  • This... was very helpful

  • Glad you liked it.

  • Thanks, That is nice to hear.

  • Why did you use P and not M?

  • For which technique are you refering too?

  • @silverond Well, all of them, using M will give you better pictures no matter what.

  • If the settings that you used in M turned out to be the same settings the camera chose, say, in Av mode, then they wouldn't be better, just the same. M gives you more ability to force the camera to do things it wouldn't chosen but yeild a better picture in certain situations. Very Long exposure, HDR photography etc.

  • why did you use spotmetering with the first pic ?

  • I didn't, I used exposure compensation to correct a dark subject. Though I could have used spotmetering do do the same thing. If I haven't covered it in one of my other videos, I should cover spot metering in the future.

  • @jonvideo ah ok srry, i tought it was in spot metering :)

  • Thank you SO much for this video. Sometimes it's so hard to find tutorials that are not intimidating and your videos are very raw and real. I just bought the Canon Rebel XSI today and I'm a total beginner to DSLRs. This video has given me some great guidance and also has taught me that I just need to play around with it and be creative.

  • Glad you like it, Its nice to hear nice things from youtube comments, That is not always the case. You may want to the the dvds at our website elitevideo com

We have a training video set for the xsi on dvd that I think would be really helpful to you.

  • I have just ordered this camera and am hoping i will be able to use it easily with out too much trouble. Thanks for posting a video so i can use this as i learn to use the camera!

  • Great, It is a fun camera. Also check out our videos at elitevideo com website. We have a 2 dvd set called The T1i made easy. These videos will teach you everything you need to know about the camera.

  • I'm thinking about getting into photography and I plan on taking photography classes in the Spring, but i'm unsure as to what kind of camera to get, I want to create professional looking images and I figured I should purchase a camera like the Canon T1i, but i'm lost.

  • @spikedupleo Hi there I'd be happy to help you, if you'd like a hand, are thinking DSLR, compact micro or bridge? How much do you want to spend etc? If your thinking of the T1i or 500D i'd also recommend you take a look at either Nikon D3000 or the D3100, the D3100 is an awesome camera, takes amazing pictures and very good if you just starting out.

  • @gerardbiteme Haha, of course! I want to go with a DSLR, and since I am a beginner with DSLR's I did a little research and I came to the conclusion that the Nikon D3100, Nikon D5000, Canon EOS Rebel XS, and XSi were the best IMO. But one feature that I really wanted to have was the ability to record video in at 720p. But I REALLY like the D3100. I am going to check it out at my local Best Buy tomorrow. :) BTW, how long is the recording limit on DSLR's?

  • @spikedupleo you should check the pentax kx, it is a very good amateur camera, i think it's pretty cheap right now plus 720p video. i think pentax is kinda underrated. but nikon d3100 or canon t1i would do too. and dont go to best buy you can find cameras cheaper in amazon or ebay

  • THANKS!!!HOPE TO SEE MORE OF YOUR TECHNIQUE FOR THIS CAMERA.

  • not ur greatest work

  • dude the last picture of the dog. ummm... IT SUCKED!

  • Yes, I made reference to that in video, I showing an example of motion blur. I went to your site and saw your highlighted skate video. It was nice. Congrats! To go step further You may want to add rack focus shots, low angle depth of field shots, a point/view shot. (holding cam on board) twisting angle shot,, behind board on wheels shot, action toward cam shot, start a shot from back of shirt as moves away, repeat edit on jump, slomo, spin wheel closeup - thats what I'd do.

  • @masterDJ32 LOL fawk yeah

  • Hello. Maybe you could help on a problem Im experiencing on my eos 450D.

I cant cntrol the Exposure values on Manual unless I decrease the Shutter speed. If not my pics come out blurry and very dark. Thanks in advance.

  • What is your ISO set on? How bright is it when you take the pictures? Indoors or outdoors?

  • Thanks for the tips! keep it up!

  • Thank you for posting these vids even though people like to hate, you guys are awesome!

  • Just use a fill flash that so stupid

  • Dude... That first example sucks! Sure, the cabin looks more lighter BUT, the sky has burn off and theres no tone anymore. You should use a polarizing filter to make that sky look as good as the cabin.

  • That is a good idea, keep I was trying to make a point about how it works more than pure beauty of the image, Do you have images I can use that you took that would be better suited? Let me know and I will use them. I needed to get the pooint across and that was what that example was for. Thanks Kalle.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the clarity, I figured you were a nice person. Another reason I didn't use a polarizer is that it would have confused what I was trying to teach. The filter would have made it such that I might not have needed the compensation, so I couldn't then really show it. If I was shooting the cabin for a brochure, even if you blow out the background, because of it's simple shape, I can easily replace it with some blue sky and clouds background in post production.

  • can i use that technique also on my 550 d or rebel t2i? thanks man!! awesome video!!

  • on those moving images use Sport :) clearer and better unless thats the effect your going for is blur.

  • Good tip, thanks

  • this video did help me a lot with my camera. thanks

  • Good to know that thanks.

  • this is the most awesome video Ive ever seen about the T1i...I own one and didnt even know the full potential of this DSLR camera

  • thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you......

  • thans... i had no clue oon what to do with that flash option (:

and thanx for the motion capturing tips (:

  • My pictures are now really dark? not sure what I did.... I am really new and just trying to figure my camera out, please help :)

  • What is you iso set at? Also check that the exposure compensation is not set to a negitive number.

  • Thanks for posting this Jon. Good stuff.

  • Thank you for your information!!!

  • shutter speed on the moving shots is too slow, you can get great movement by increasing the shutter slightly to 1/80 - 1/100, you will still get the same effect but a sharper subject, i photograph motorsport which moves very quickly. Hope that helps anyone having some issues

  • Be sure to watch our videos for the T2i, here on youtube as some of the same techniques apply

  • @jonvideo

hi i just bought my ever first cam, canon 500d which is the equivalent of Canon Rebel T1i. since i'm a newbie I find it quite complicated to use. i don't know what I did, but there's no aperture everytime I take a shot, it's always in "00". when i tried to put the in Av, I can't change the aperture, it stays in "F00". even when i put in AF, there's no aperture and no focus confirmation everytime I look in the viewfinder or when i tried Live View, the focus doesn't change to green..

  • @dexrei23- Either you are using a non-canon lens, OR the lens isnt fully twisted into the locks, OR the lens contacts on the camera are covered or defective. Loosening the lens a bit is a way to preset your aperture then taking video in that aperture. The T1i lacks manual aperture control when taking video.

    Hope thie helps

  • Just bought my first DSLR, Canon Rebel T1i. These tips are most excellent helps for me. Now I have confidence to shoot other than in Auto mode.

    Thanks!

  • Glad you like them. Please subscribe to this channel. And since it is your first DLSR you may be helped out by our two DVD set. Rebel T1i made easy you can get this at our website elitevideo

  • I've bought the nikon d90, love it. And thanks for your tips. I already knew the most but the last one, of the bike, really helps me.

  • Exposure compensation has different and sometimes unpredictable results when using a matrix metering on not pro bodies. For using it on amateur cameras it is strongly recommended to turn center-weighted metering mode on.

  • Most people here are expecting professional tips , to those people , I suggest them to get off youtube and go meet some real pro photographers.

These videos are for amateurs who just wanna take good pictures and not like us who need to know the science behind it!

Great job guys! Keep it up!

    :D

  • Xclent !!!! Thnks!!

  • this is great tips

  • Thanks. Just got a basic T1i kit, and really don't have much time to "learn" this stuff. Love the tips. I really wanted the T2i, but was strongly advised to use the extra $ for a better lens. Man, I didn't really know how much of a difference that makes!

    Good job.

  • geezus..is there a point to this shitty video? or are you trying to get a job? Fail

  • I am looking for suggestions to get better, always trying to improve myself. Let me know what I can do to improve.

What camera do you have now?

  • @jonvideo This is teaching amateur photogs the incorrect way to compensate for exposure!!!! Teach people about exposure and aperture and shutter speed!!!

  • We do show expouse and aperture, in our other videos, This is just a good way to understand what exposure comp does, and If I never show what it does and how to use it, then people ask me to explain what it does.

  • @Fabbibe

I agree completely. After all, photography is ALL about aperature size and shutter speed, not EC.

You could be getting much better photos if you learned what aperature and shutter mean to the finished product.

  • @hwhobbs Thanks. I am only fourteen and taught myself the basics of exposure by playing with my deceased father's (who was a professional photog) DSLR for around four years and now I have a T1i and i really do not like it. I am pining for a 7D for sports photography... the AF on the T1i is just so slow and inaccurate, ugh I am going off on a rant. Well anyways thank you for agreeing with me.

  • @dasy1000 after watching your videos.... this dude blows you out of the water...

    Great job Jon...

  • Dude, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is just what I was looking for! Please keep posting those tips. I just bought the t1i ( with 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses). I am serious about learning photography, too, and the thought of selling pictures just brought a smile to my face, lol.

  • Thanks for the nice letter, please subscribe to our video channel and tell others. I am putting up a new video in a few days.

  • nice set of "compress" tips.

  • Thanks, keep on watching, Ill have more videos out this summer.

  • @jonvideo wow, way to be a dick. "people who buy this XTi Canon camera are not serious photographers," ya right. ANYBODY CAN BE A SERIOUS PHOTGRAPHER, they dont need to have a fancy camera, or even good lenses to be a serious photographer. you dont need to be a professional to be serious about photograpy. 'professional' and 'serious' THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. its not up to you to decide who is a serious photographer and who is not.

  • I like to joke around a lot so I'm not very serious. I'm serious with my kids but I laugh with them more than anyone. I take a new safer Chemo treatment seriously (Rituxan), but if it doesnt hold I have to go back to the old possibly more toxic stuff (cytoxan) . I should know in a few months

If that becomes the case- (lets hope not) I have decided to have a party called, "One more go around" Invite all my friends and have a good time.

Everything else is just not that important .

  • Oh and I should not have said,"serious" photographers in the comments below, I should have said "top dollor " or something. I'm sorry. My apoligies. I see how I opened a can of worms that I did not mean to. I used the wrong word. My mistake.

  • I own a T1i and and I am very serious about photography and what I will do with it. This is my first SLR camera and have already sold many pictures. Great hints! thanks :)

  • where do you sell your pictures?

  • Same question here, where did you sell them? :)

  • @rrozzi1863 how do you sell photos? and how much should a new photographer, like myself, sell a photo for? Can you sell the same photo to multiple individuals?

  • I agree banjynl you buy what you can afford not everyone has a couple of grand to spend on a camera body & lens

people who buy the 500d are probably not full of it & just like doing photography unlike jonvideo

  • I agree with sazzzzzler you buy what you can afford, thats why I own less expensive lenses and dslr cameras, I, yes, you are right -I am full of it- my wife and kids taught me that years ago.

  • when i click the set button to scroll through the different options,, nothing happens..

  • Are you in playback or shooting mode? Are you in auto or one of the semi manual modes? Try going to S or shutter mode or M or manual mode and then try. Let me know what happens

  • I'm sorry, but I got two minutes into this video and simply can't believe what I'm hearing. This guy knows NOTHING about photography.

  • Jimmy, I'm the guy- John, and perhaps I know nothing about photography but I'm willing to learn. Been learning from other photographers since 19, I am mid 40s now. I am being sincere when I ask you to share with me something that would help me-Your sentence implies that you do and would love to learn from you. Comments here may have given me a false sense of ego, please, I need ideas so I can get better. If I don't hear back from you I would think you just want to be mean- Please share.

  • I might have some constructive input. I've only been shooting for a couple of years, but I know a couple of professional photographers who have taught me a lot over time.

A couple of things that I'd say you're doing "wrong" (through a pros eyes) in your video is using 'Av', T'v' and 'P'. By using manual you'd get a lot more control over your pictures without having to mess with exposure compensation etc.

Also flash. I've never met a serious photographer who uses the built-in flash. (more coming)

  • However.. It seems like you use your camera for taking pictures of family and events and occasionally play around with it. If that's the case using the 'Av', 'Tv' and 'P' modes is fine and I still think your video is good for people who is overwhelmed by all the functions of their new dSLR. :)

  • I didn't mean to come across as so abrasive in my comment, I apologise Jon.

My only gripe is that you're teaching people to use 'work arounds' for common photographic techniques that people should be learning to do manually, and as a by product, understanding the processes behind them. Teaching people to use the exposure compensation function, instead of a basic understanding of what exposure is, and what they can do to manipulate it to their specific needs isn't best practice.

  • Thanks for explaining, that is a lot different from knowing nothing about photography:) My first SLR camera Pentax k1000 totally manual and manual lens This video was made for T1i owners and they ask about their flash and AV TV modes. Imagine in my videos if I said I won't even teach you that.... here's why. Technically everything on all these cameras are work arounds except manual. Our videos are two dvds 90 minutes, because we do sections on the processes behind them. - .

  • Keep in mind people who buy this XTi Canon camera are not serious photographers, If they were , they would have the Canon 7D or higher, a prime lens or two with an f2.8 and some cool lighting. On cam flash can be used with a diffuser and reflector or as a fill if you needed it. Thanks for posting back, I see where you are coming from. I hope you get a chance to see some of the sections in our videos that go into theory and manual modes. I do cater to a certain group, and...

  • I will take your advice on some new videos coming out in the next few months , (I have to teach my wife how to drive with a manual transmission first ;)...stay tuned. Thanks for the input and discussion - John

  • That's a very serious claim there and I doubt if you can back it up. It's not the camera but the photographer in the end of the day. Sure a pro is more likely to be in de **D or *D range, but he or she doesn't have to be. Most DSLR's are excellent capabele of producing stunning images. Don't underestimate a person in advance based on his used camera!

  • all I can say is Niceeeeeeeeeeeee

  • hi thanks for video, can u tell me which memory card is best for canon 500d ?

thanks in advance for ur reply

  • I think they all work about the same these day, bigger should be better for you of course.

  • hii, i have a canon xsi rebel, or a 450D coming tomorrow

would you say the camera usd in this video, and the 450D are similar?

becuase if could do all this in the video on my camera, that would be amazing, please comment, because im dying to know :D

  • This can be very helpful! Thanks for taking the time & effort.

    Tom,Liverpool.

  • Thanks Tom, Please spread the word on this channel and subscribe, I have more in the next few months I will be posting.

  • Glad it helped Tom, I hope you subscribed to our site as I have more videos to come. Please tell others about our channel- John

  • Thanks for the video. It is really usefull for the beginners..... Do more videos life this.

  • thanks this video was a big great help..i need to keep getting more tutor with my camera

  • thanks for taking the time. very useful techniques.

  • Very informative. Thanks going to check the next part.

  • Thank you for taking some of the confusion and mystery out of using my new T1i!

  • Thank you so much for these tutorials. They are great for us overwhelmed beginners!

  • tutorial on night photops

  • hey if i had already taken a picture how do i use the exposure compensation method to 'repair' the picture?

  • U r using the exposure compensation- but why don't simply use the center measuring methode?

That's what I do in cases like these...

  • I could have done that.

It is easier for some beginners to understand exposure compensation and I can then show how the opposite works with the inside stage shots. In the future I will be doing a section on spot metering for youtube though.

  • wow really thanks, but where's part 2 please upload the rest ;(

  • Part 2 will be up by Wednesday at the latest.

  • when you took the picture of the cabin, was a flash used? same thing for the stage pictures....was there a flash used?

  • There was no flash used on the cabin picture, or on the stage picture, the results were acheived using exposure compensation.

  • Thanks, make sure you are a subscriber to our youtube channel and you should be notified when part 2 is out (next week.

  • Wow! Thanks for the education!
