I loved this silly elephant play video. When Shirley trumpeted into Tarra's mouth, I think she was trying to teach her to trumpet instead of bark. LOL.
i cannot get over how Shirley has seemingly grown younger. She looks so happy and younger now. Says so much for what the Sanctuary is doing for these elephants, and what these elephants are doing for each other. Watch and Learn, People!
I love everything you are doing for these profoundly amazing creatures. My goal in life is to own my own rescue sanctuary. Simply amazing! Angels on Earth! Thank you! I used the famous video of Terra & Bella to pull at the heart strings in my Speech class to help my fellow students to more understand the emotional complexity & steer clear of anything using eles for human benefit
@veggiewarriors Tarra has always barked like this. While it is her most common "speak," she actually makes many different vocalizations. Be sure to watch our YouTube video of "Tarra Talking & Playing"
@ljbain5 Tarra lives with the "Founding Herd" in New Asia (Divas are on the other side of the property in Q-Barn) When Tarra is indoors, Bella sleeps on her own special orthopedic bed outside Tarra's stall. YouTube doesn't allow us to post links in this comment area, but you can see a photo of Bella on her bed in our November 22, 2010 Ele-Notes on our website.
are the elephants trumpeting through their trunks or their mouths???? very interesting. Since I think their trunks are like our noses, how do they do that?
What a great video! Thanks for sharing their joy with us, & for providing them a safe/loving environment (& a reason) to express that joy. When Shirley was trumpeting into Tarra's mouth -- is that something common among elephants, or a sign of friendship between these two ladies or just something that, perhaps, Shirley felt like doing for the heck of it? I know next to nothing about these creatures but I'd never heard of/seen that particular activity before. Thanks again for everything you do!
@quextico When an elephant places their trunk into the mouth of another elephant, they are demonstrating affection and trust--definitely a sign of friendship. We just generally don't see them trumpet while they are doing it!
@Griwhoolda This foot shuffling action is purely a playful gesture. We have seen several other Sanctuary elephants do this, too, and it always occurs during bouts of play.
This video is such a delight to watch. What a party! It's a wonder the neighbours didn't complain about the noise ... hehe. It goes to show that if an elephant is allowed to be an elephant, surrounded with love, she will demonstrate her happiness, which our beautiful Shirley is doing with so much exuberance.
I read through the TES site, that Shirley is receiving anti inflammatories. Is this for arthritis?
Thank you TES for allowing us to be part of Shirley and Tarra's party. Had a ball.

Has Tarra been "barking" ever since she met Bella or has she always made barking sounds even before?
I sometimes think Tarra is beginning to think of herself as a dog!
I never knew Shirley was so vocal. Her eyes are so deep and tell their own story......

WHY DID SHIRLEY KEEP PUTTING HER BUTT UP TO TARRAS FACE? I KNOW IN CATS THAT IS A FRIENDLY THING.....................
BARSMAT 1 year ago
@BARSMAT This is a friendly gesture in elephants, too--especially when they are in a playful mood.

My favourite part is the deep rumble. This is the sound I think the earth would make if it could. Perhaps it does.

This is awesome. Elephants behaving as they do when they are free to express themselves. Love you gals.

Is the foot shuffling for any particular reason (besides it probably being fun to do)?

Cool, I had no idea! I always wondered why their groans were so deep sounding yet their trumpets were really high pitched.
Very cute video!

That was hilarious when Shirley was trumpeting in Tarra's mouth. She's probably wondering why Tarra wasn't trumpeting along with her.
