Why would you buy a car that has tripped a DTC? You should mention that to the seller ,take your test drive ,and get a PPI from a trusted tech. Also the price should drop IMO
Could be but a check engine code mostly indicates electrical problems. I know this because I do this scanning all the time, even with big coach buses. Thanks dude!
Warning!!! Google “Engine and Transmission World” Beware!!!
Read the complaints; they are crooks, they will rip you off.
Located in Milwaukee, WI. Mark Dobrenko and Allen Simmons are the owners and have been ripping people off for decades. They will send you a junk engine or transmission knowing you will want to return it but they charge you a 25% restocking fee then turn around a sell it to the next poor fool and so on and so on.
ok i worked on cars for deacades NOT pro mechanic and also sold new n used cars for 6 years ! That thing about gunning engine while holding break down isnt that good of an idea ! Take a Full road test up hill also like on a ramp entering highway differnt speeds stop n go at laest a 1/2 drive will pop up any problems that any vehicle has ! Except of course leaks when it's raianing LOL !
THATS NOT A WAY TO TEST AN ENGINE BY HOLDING THE BRAKE AND ACCERATING THE GAS PEDAL,YOU KNOW THE STRESS YOU PUTING ON THE CARS TRANSMISSION,AND ALSO THE MOTOR MOUNTS YOU PUTTING PRESSURE WIITCH COULD DAMAGE THE TWO THINGS I JUST MENTION.
slamming the gas with the brake depressed and in gear...if someone did that to my car i would take him out and beat the living shit out of him...you can put it in gear and see if the tranmission engages roughly thats a good idea, or just take it for a regular test driv
i just bought an eclipse 2001 gs, it had the check engine light on so i took it to a mechanic i know and my father knows to check it out, he used some device on it, and he said its just a oxygon sensor that died out... i havent changed it and runs perfectly well but if i want it to pass the inspection i have to change it so i will, it doesnt matter if it has the light on aslong as you kno why the light is on.
i went to look at a car that had the engine light removed or taped over. thats why you should check its there when the car is on but not started. also. Never ever listen to trick number 2. thats the equivalent to giving it to a teen who just watched fast and furious. Your engine may be good but a transmission swap/rebuild will make you wish you only had a bad coil. Terrible advice! just find a hill to drive it up
@watcher05er i agree.. he said never buy a car with a check engine light on. there are hundreds of codes.. A O2 censor could be bad, or your gas cap culd not be on tight. get it checked out. it could be simple and you could save a ton of money.
this is very quick way of load testing the engine, very logical, and first time I have seen this done, however a used car lot could also hold you liable if something fails doing this. well, they could hold you responsible if anything fails while your driving the car anyway
that doesnt help because sometimes the light comes on when the engine is warm and then when you are half way home it comes you cant put the car back!!
Great idea! You can verify that by doing a road test. Finally, the engine is the most expensive part of your vehicle that is why checking the "check engine light" is important. Thanks for your comment.
@65kotse78 It can be, a automatic transmission rebuild can be almost or even more expensive and is usually the thing that gets overlooked in regular servicing. Most just drive and change the engine oil. I check antifreeze for oil, oil for antifreeze, brake fluid for color, power steering for color/leaks, transmission fluid for color and smell. Test drive it up and down hills to test for engine/transmission problems and down hill for brakes. This is cool though man, info it up to the masses.
sounds like a good idea but i'd be wanting to take it away from the owner i did that and only if i saw sure i was going to buy it if it went well. There are many other things to check other then the motor. Don't forget about ball joints, tie rods, breaks, frame, fuel/break lines, body, tires, ect...
i do the second trick to detect missfires in the engine. but what i do is i slowly raise the rpm until i can hear or feel the missfire and leave the car running i that possition. then i go and unplug the coils and check which one isnt working .
This technique will work great if you can monitor the engine rpm with your scanner and check the difference in rpm every time you unplug a coil or spark plug wire. Excellent comment.
@warriorps3101 yes thats exacly what i do. I might not have the fanciest snap on scanners but i do however have an elm327 interface clone, i got it on ebay for under 30 dollars, it lets me monitor test status, rpm, fuel eficiency, oxygen sensors, freeze frame data, and on some cars it will give me tire monitor dtc's , its a great deal compared to the price the only requirement is a pc preferably a laptop.
I am just happy to be of service so you guys or gals don't get rip off when buying a used vehicle using "check engine light test". Many car buyers have been sucked into buying problem vehicles when not watching this feature in the car dash panel.
C.E.L ..are you kidding, it can be something as simple as the gas cap is not on tight or a $30 sensor....if some retard puts my car in drive and floors it they are getting tossed out on their ass, good way to destroy the transmission....here are the basics, open the hood, check the color of the fluids and that will tell you all you need to know.brown burnt tranny fluid or white milky oil or oil floating in the ant freeze AVOID THE CAR you must drive it..no used car is perfect, this guy is a fool
Hey Dude, reading your comments, you must be a used car salesman. You made buying a car really simple and you won't even let the customer load up your tranny by what I am showing here. If you see the check engine light, always expect the worst because if you don't, you will be paying a garage thousands of dollars after you picked up the car. I am sorry to say that but about 20% of used car salesman are con artist and I think you are one of them.

Here's the trick for manual tranny: check if the engine light is coming on or off when engine is started. If no, engine is fine but now take it for 30 min road test until the engine really warms up and check for acceleration and engine noise at max speed, coolant temperature, and smoke at the tailpipe. Final test, run your finger in the tailpipe and check for signs of oil (worn engine), lots of black carbon (too much fuel)....this should be an OK engine.
ok help me out here..... I bought an eclipse about 3 weeks ago. 2001 eclipse and the guy wanted 3000 for it but I talked him down to 2300. Now the only thing wrong with this car as he said was It needed rotors, break pads, tires and an oil change. also had 200,000 miles on it. ( seems like it runs good tho ) Now I found theres an oil leak also I dont think its major, I can probly just get a valve seal. But also the check engine light was on and didnt go off... So was that a good deal?
Two things you can check: 1.) if you got automatic tranny, follow this video and see if engine quits when you floor it. 2.) If no automatic, take it for a spin for 30 mins and find max speed, if over 65 mph without overheating engine and has no smoke at tailpipe, then you really got a deal.
Any electrical wiring or component related to the engine management system like sensors, solenoids, outputs, modules, computer signals will be reported thru check engine light and might include shorts. Some electrical malfunction might not be reported example: if the component is not monitored by a computer such as head lights or lighting on older vehicles. Hope this helps.
@AcCyC Hi Dude! Not possible because you can't load it while parked. You have to go for a road test and listen to your engine while shifting gears (at the same time see the color of the tailpipe smoke: blue bad engine; black needs tune up...) Got it?
