Funny, all the different opinions on this. I tried to listen to it objectively, as an admirer of Ace.
I like it. It's not perfect; and yeah, there are a couple of mistakes, but he may not have had time to learn it and may have even been nervous.
I like that he stuck to the traditional sound of the anthem and didn't trash or butcher it like so many artists do these days, making it all about THEM.
He needed more practice. But gotta luv that Ace! He certainly had the balls to get up there even though he wasn't comfortable playing the piece. It's always good to know that rock stars are human too and are not perfect. Rock on Ace! Frehley will always be Kiss's best lead guitarist!
Are YOU kidding? The whole point of Hendrix's performance was that he was never IN tune! It was about improvising around the melody, not sticking to a set pattern of notes.

lol i dont think he was trying to play it very well. and once the smoke and flame starts thats usually when he makes it sound like the guitar is messing up.
what none of you mention is once you have the smoke, its actually lit by a very hot light, which bends the strings and distorts the sound! So there is nothing you can do once that happens.

@TheAzzzra Couldn't agree more. We'll never know how far he might have taken the instrument. I just figure it's an insult to Jimi to type his name on the same page as Ace Frehley's.
It's a long list (influential players), I just don't believe Ace Frehley deserves to be anywhere near the top.

Ace has ALWAYS fucked up when he plays live....all the way back to the 70's but thats just Ace and thats what to me gave KISS that raw live feel to the shows.... So what Tommy plays note for note off the record... thats not Rock and Roll!

I'm pretty sure when he pulled out the fake pickup that he stretched out the strings, and that caused them to go out of tune. The cold doesn't help either

Ouch, that one hurt, but he's still my favorite overall. Ace still carries that rocker attitude that made Kiss great when I was growing up, while the real Kiss is busy doing commercials with midgets and singing with Adam Lambert... yuck.

Come on people....ACE can play the National Anthem , he just for whatever reason didn't play it well that night, SO WHAT! what's done is done....ACE FREHLEY is still one of the most influential guitarist of all time! The guy makes the Les Paul the coolist instrument on the planet. Try accomplishing that yourself, and then we'll talk.

First solo I ever learned (age 13) was "Detroit Rock City" and about two weeks later, I realized I was already beyond Ace's abilities. Traded up for a new guitar hero named Angus Young, and never looked back. Basic pentatonic licks don't have to suck, just when played by Ace, apparently.
As for Ace "making the Les Paul cool"? Puh-leeze!!! Ever heard of Jimmy Page?
@MrRigss Ace is definitely the best guitar player in this video, I'll give you that. But as far as influence? If we're talking most influential guitar player of all time... that would probably still be either Jimmy Page (Stairway to Heaven), or Ritchie Blackmore (Smoke on the Water). More guitar players started out with those two songs than anything KISS ever wrote. If you like, Ace, good for you. Just don't try to make him something he's not (talented) just to validate your preference.
@36hcupsizeandgrowing Good call. Chuck is still even a bit too complicated for a lot of beginners, but he definitely deserves his spot amongst the guitar gods. His 12 bar blues power chords put a lot of stress on inexperienced pinky fingers, and his solos certainly would make a beginner cry, but he surely influenced a whole lot of players.
@danivers I happen to love both Page and Ace just about equally. This was not Ace's best showing obviously. From all the live footage I've ever seen or heard of Page and Ace...I'd say Ace was the better live player. He played most of his solos as you hear them and fairly well. Page's live stuff (not all, but a lot) was almost never on the mark and lacked the AWESOMENESS you hear on record. Ace has a great feel, tone and delivery. As does Page and MANY other players.

My opinion is: Ace played his own stuff LIVE more consistently than Page did. Maybe Jimmy was fucked up on stage a lot? Page is definitely a better guitarist, no doubt...I just think he didn't duplicate his parts very well live. Ace did. And, I'd challenge just about anyone that's been playing one year to take on Ace frickin Frehley's parts..not gonna be pretty.
iv'e been a kiss fan for 33 years, and ace is a cool character, i'd love to have a beer with him, but i'm sorry to say, he plays like shit. I'm just so embarrassed for him. It's impossible to take him seriously or give him any credibility as a guitarist any more. Getting a few notes right is not much to ask but he totally blew it on that night.
Gotta say it Ace is my hero, and always will be. I have been playing guitar since 14. I have a three pickup Les Paul I bought in 1990, loaded with dimzarzio's. That was awful. I think he was just having an off night here.
Ace does a great job, here, considering it's not under optimal performance conditions, he's just wingin' it and I must say he's doing a great job. The crowd seems to really be loving it.
Now, if you want some laughs, go watch Paul Stanley's "solo" from Animalize, LOL.

it's pretty obvious what is wrong.....can't some of you see the pick-up cover come off and then get pulled out by Ace, pulling it out has dragged/stretched the strings, now he has an out of tune guitar....whats he suppose to do...stop altogether...or keep going and do what he can...??
BTW way all of you bashing him on this performance, watch Hendrix's version. It sounds like Ace actually was doing a version similar to that. If that was the case, it's almost spot on, minus the dive bombs and siren type sounds. If this is the actual case, it could be considered a genus move. Even the effects are almost the same.

He's on another youtube video playing in Kansas before an NFL game. He played it perfectly. You are crazy if you don't go see him, he awesome. E-mail me back and let me know how he performed, Mr. Frehley is one of the best 5 top guitartist in the world but I think watching this the smoke got in the way, maybe.
yeah he was having problems with the effects setup. also it was probably fricken cold, any guitarist knows it's had to play when your hands are freezing. Nice recovery though.
Dude im a huge ace freehley fan, have been since i was a kid, he is what made me pick up a guitar. With all that said all I can say is what the hell ace. That was horrible, i hope he isn't drinking again.

I agree with you guys!! Ace is the man!! Tommy plays all ace riffs on sonic boom!! I just expected more out of the star spangled banner from ace!! He pulled it off in classic ace style!!! Ace has ALWAYS fucked up when he plays live....all the way back to the 70's but thats just Ace and thats what to me gave KISS that raw live feel to the shows.... So what Tommy plays note for note off the record... thats not Rock and Roll!

I'm pretty sure when he pulled out the fake pickup that he stretched out the strings, and that caused them to go out of tune. The cold doesn't help either

Ouch, that one hurt, but he's still my favorite overall. Ace still carries that rocker attitude that made Kiss great when I was growing up, while the real Kiss is busy doing commercials with midgets and singing with Adam Lambert... yuck.

First solo I ever learned (age 13) was "Detroit Rock City" and about two weeks later, I realized I was already beyond Ace's abilities. Traded up for a new guitar hero named Angus Young, and never looked back. Basic pentatonic licks don't have to suck, just when played by Ace, apparently.
As for Ace "making the Les Paul cool"? Puh-leeze!!! Ever heard of Jimmy Page?

@MrRigss Ace is definitely the best guitar player in this video, I'll give you that. But as far as influence? If we're talking most influential guitar player of all time... that would probably still be either Jimmy Page (Stairway to Heaven), or Ritchie Blackmore (Smoke on the Water). More guitar players started out with those two songs than anything KISS ever wrote. If you like, Ace, good for you. Just don't try to make him something he's not (talented) just to validate your preference.

@36hcupsizeandgrowing Good call. Chuck is still even a bit too complicated for a lot of beginners, but he definitely deserves his spot amongst the guitar gods. His 12 bar blues power chords put a lot of stress on inexperienced pinky fingers, and his solos certainly would make a beginner cry, but he surely influenced a whole lot of players.

@danivers I happen to love both Page and Ace just about equally. This was not Ace's best showing obviously. From all the live footage I've ever seen or heard of Page and Ace...I'd say Ace was the better live player. He played most of his solos as you hear them and fairly well. Page's live stuff (not all, but a lot) was almost never on the mark and lacked the AWESOMENESS you hear on record. Ace has a great feel, tone and delivery. As does Page and MANY other players.

My opinion is: Ace played his own stuff LIVE more consistently than Page did. Maybe Jimmy was fucked up on stage a lot? Page is definitely a better guitarist, no doubt...I just think he didn't duplicate his parts very well live. Ace did. And, I'd challenge just about anyone that's been playing one year to take on Ace frickin Frehley's parts..not gonna be pretty.

iv'e been a kiss fan for 33 years, and ace is a cool character, i'd love to have a beer with him, but i'm sorry to say, he plays like shit. I'm just so embarrassed for him. It's impossible to take him seriously or give him any credibility as a guitarist any more. Getting a few notes right is not much to ask but he totally blew it on that night.

Gotta say it Ace is my hero, and always will be. I have been playing guitar since 14. I have a three pickup Les Paul I bought in 1990, loaded with dimzarzio's. That was awful. I think he was just having an off night here.

Ace does a great job, here, considering it's not under optimal performance conditions, he's just wingin' it and I must say he's doing a great job. The crowd seems to really be loving it.

BTW way all of you bashing him on this performance, watch Hendrix's version. It sounds like Ace actually was doing a version similar to that. If that was the case, it's almost spot on, minus the dive bombs and siren type sounds. If this is the actual case, it could be considered a genus move. Even the effects are almost the same.

I don't know why everyone is giving him a hard time. Have you ever played out side in the cold? Me and a few guys used to practice in my buddy's shed, we could play a song perfectly in a heated building but out in a cold shed your hands go numb and it gets hard to play. He's on another youtube video playing in Kansas before an NFL game. He played it perfectly. You are crazy if you don't go see him, he awesome. E-mail me back and let me know how he performed, Mr. Frehley is one of the best 5 top guitartist in the world but I think watching this the smoke got in the way, maybe.

yeah he was having problems with the effects setup. also it was probably fricken cold, any guitarist knows it's had to play when your hands are freezing. Nice recovery though.
