I went wild camping on my own in a rather unprepared way in sweden recently and I was absolutely freezing, I woke up a couple of times in the night and boiled water over my fire and put it back in the bottle to use as a hot water bottle, it really helped and you can still use the water for other things!
wow, i cant believe he didnt say this. If you are really cold do this. Boil Water. Put Boiling water in Nalgene. Put Nalgene in Sleeping Bag. Boom, youre warm and toasty.
Haaaaaa Try the northern climates. If you can stay warm, say abut 30 degrees consider yourself lucky. A -30 degree mummy bag is is the only way to go, but they are pricey.
stating the obvious a bit, putting layers on when your cold. Heres one I learnt from another youtube video on the right there. Boil some water, put it in a bottle, and put it between your legs ;-)
Village idiots, I mean expert village would probably recommend to someone drowning,:
''Try getting to to surface of the water, but do NOT start inhaling oxygen until you are at the surface'',
When I 1st began youtubing I seriously thought all of the expert village vids were a tongue in cheek joke, they are MORONS!!!!!! They have absolutely no expertise in any field at all.
I remember starting the night with my long underwear, suffering a bit with the caloric suck, and then cranking myself upright for the "put-on-everything-you-own" complete magilla. Best to figure exactly the bag you'll need and go from there...
A 4 season mummy bag & tent. Bag liner, 1.5"X72" sleep pad, socks, base layers, & a hat or ski mask. Layers! Polarwrap. Place bulky objects like a backpack at your side or feet, but not on the bag, as it'll crush insulation; extra clothing can go inside the bag. Stay hydrated. Eat before bed. Boil water for bottle to be placed in bag. Jumping jacks beforehand. Do not bring in any moisture. Fluff bag. Cover face for 5 min to warm up, don't breathe in it all night. And, don't forget to zip up ;)
Tests show that when your sleeping, up to 75 percent of heat loss is downward and only 25 percent up through the top of your sleeping bag. So, it is imperative you use a good quality pad under your bedroll. While in my sleeping bag, I sleep in my panties only. I have never been cold. It is your body heat that warms the air and the air is the insulator.
@stackedhippiechick I find this to be true too. When I sleep naked at home, I would always get very hot at night, more than when I wore clothes. Put 2 and 2 together...
stuffing clothes in the bottom and then stuffing your bag in a tight day pack can ruin the insulating qualities of a sleeping bag because it compresses the bag's layers which are meant to trap insulating air and keep you warm........ In addition to this run-on, if your feet are too cold to warm themselves up on their own, adding more layers will not be adequate. You need to pull them up and vigorously move them, then wrap them up once they're warm......
A lot of you people give this guy crap for saying "zip all the way up", well it has to be said because there are a lot of people out there who are stupid enough to venture out into the wilderness and not know a thing. Some people have to be told the most basic of things! I've met these people on the trail before.
Eating a candy bar b4 entering the bag helps. Deploying a light weight reflective blanket under & over the bag helps too. When I thru-hiked the AT beginning in GA on 10/21/10, I used a 32 deg, 800 down bag weighing 1lb 7oz. I supplemented with polypropelene thermals & balaclava, wool socks, a light weight sleeping pad, a 3x7 reflective ground sheet, & a cheap, light weight reflective blanket. I was comfortable & toasty even on the coldest night. Don't forget to fluff your bag up by shaking it.
When I was backpacking in Australia in the Alice Springs area. I got so surprised by the drastic temperature drop there. Because its mostly a desert the temps ranges from 40'C to minus 4'C at night. That change totally surprised me on this my first trip!
But I kept warm anyway. Not snuggly warm but adequately cosy! I even buried my head inside the sleeping bag and breathed my hot air in it. That helped a bit!
@brockpierce1984 necessity is often the best teacher, lol. Had you thought of finding a warm radiated boulder to sleep next to or were those unavailable in your terrain?
@BrokenAeroVT Well I stayed on a Camping Ground with huge grassy grounds. But I had an air mattress with me to keep me insulated it was softer then those silvery insulation mats. Some how I always prefer an air mattress to the tin foil mats, to have at least a bit of comfort in my tent.
@brockpierce1984 Oh yeah, when I say "sleeping pad", I mean either "air mattress" or "foam pad". I place a durable reflective blanket beneath it as a tent ground cloth and use a light weight reflective blanket above that mattress in extreme situations. Additionally, I make sure I'm not wearing any sweaty clothes from the hike, and I try to get into the bag before I cool down from the hike's exertion. Thanks for your reply Brock. Cheers!
zip the bag all the way up if you wanna stay warm??? I'll give you another important piece of advise: Get "inside" the sleeping bag, that works better than staying outside of it.
this camping videos r funny! how to stay warm in a sleeping bag r u getting me. Thats why u eat beans at camp and fart inside the sleeping bag. Thats how we did it in boy scouts. that shit was hilarious lol
I would just use a brick tent with central heat and do 100 pushups every 10 minutes and not eat ice cream or go skinny dipping in -10 degree temperature but if I was on the blue planet-Earth I would just zip the bag up more.Sheesh WHAT GREAT ADVISE!
Sleeping in long underware is a bad idea. Because when you get up in the morning you are going to be freezing and have no more clothes to put on. If you need all of your clothes to be warm at night you need a better sleeping bag! Well atleast his guy is better than that stupid girl that knows nothng about backpacking.
What's wrong with an electric blanket? Or I find cranking one off usually warms me up and it doesn't do that it usually gets me off to sleep fairly quickly.

Wow! At least he gave us credit that we wouldn't drag our camp stove into the tent. OR..... maybe he hadn't totally considered the shear POWER of stupidity.
Bear Grylls would have simply ate the eye balls of the Tauntaun then told a hyped up story about how someone only a few weeks prior had frozen to death in that very spot before retiring to his wilderness trailer.
Wow, I learned so much watching this video. All kinds of tips and tricks that, frankly, no-one would ever think of! Like zipping it up when you're cold, or putting on a hat and extra socks, brilliant! Very clever! Thank you for lending your genius to us brain-dead!
shouldn't you start first of all by telling people that it's important to get in a sleepingbag well fed and after a short excersize so your body heats up the bag... You easely win few degrees doing that... That is one of the most basic tips to give and you keep talking about zipping it close, if you don't know that you shouldn't go hiking ;)
do they really need to tell you how to stay warm like putting a hat on? if your parents didnt show you how to stay warm as a kid you and your whole family should be shot.
@DENMONKEY Actually you don't wear more cloths. The more cloths you have on keeps your heat closer to your body and keeps the dead air space in the bag cold. If anything stuff your cloths at the bottom of your bag to minimize the dead space in the bag.
For those cold nights, I always bring along a 2hp petrol generator which will supply enough electriciy to run a 1 kilowatt fire. (with the added bonus of using my George Foreman Mean Lean Grilling Machine whenever I feel hunger).
Does anybody know what model of tent is being used here? I want to replace my present one-man tent with one that has a full-sided door like the one seen here (good for ease of access) and one that you can actually sit up in without banging your head against the top; that way you can wait it out when it rains far more comfortably! Also, is there any info about tent 'modding' out there? I've modified several tents for cycle touring trips and would be interested in other peoples' ideas/experiences!
The best way I can see to keep warm is to slide your pole into the closed pocket of the female presenter of your vids! She says in the tent vid that it's always easier to stick it up when you have a friend to help you. And that's how to keep warm in ur bag
There is a very pourous foam on the iside that compresses easily when you roll it up, when you open up the air valve air fills the body a the pourous foam to give the pad loft, just like a down bag, you can then set the perfect firmness/softness by blowing into the valve. Check out any good outdoors store they should have displays to try out. Good luck, be safe & smart. And remember take only memories, leave only footprints.
One thing that I found very helpful this past winter was boiling water, putting it in my water bottle and then sticking the water bottle in the bottom of my sleeping bag. This worked wonderfully when combatting -13 degree temperatures and a tent which had to be pitched on ice.
The best way to stay warm in your sleeping bag is to be warm when entering the sleeping bag. Do a few jumping jacks to get the blood flowing and than jump into the bag, otherwise it will take a long for you to heat the air in the bag.
First, warm air is trapped too close to your body and it takes longer (if ever) for the rest of the bag to warm up, so your legs and arms stay cold because they do not get the heat from your much warmer torso through convection and radiation. Second, if you wear too many clothes, you sweat, the sweat evaporates and cools your body.
I'm not an expert. But I was born and grew up in Siberia. Speaking from experience, I would NEVER put extra clothes on when I'm sleeping in a bag. I'd put them under and/or on the bag.
With this type of method you would likely be wearing quick dry clothing that does not hold on to sweat long. If your sweating inside your bag there is a decent possibility that you are also not cold, or you need wear clothing on the extremities that get cold faster.
Your body loses heat through (1) infrared radiation, (2) air convection, (3) sweat evaporation and (4) conduction - the cold ground (snow, rock, whatever) sucking the heat out of your body. Putting clothes under your bag helps to minimize the heat lose through conduction. And this is what sleeping pads are for, of course.
i can tell you're american. get a nice 40 celcius below zero bag and and wear under wear and if its hot out bring a regular bag ahahahahahhahahaha. if you wear to much clothes you will sweat and sweat freezes. i am canadian.
I recommend a few push ups or whatever to get your blood flowing before stepping into the bag. Remember that YOU need to heat the bag with your body heat.
Theres always dogs ... friends ... hot water bottles ... warm rocks ... stuffing bag with leaves ... wear two caps with a section of space-blanket, in between ... wrap each sock with a section of space-blanket ... Pile leaves along the base of your rain-fly ... carry a Heat-Sheets SOL thermal blanket or an army reflective caualty blanket or an Adventure medical thermal bivy with you ... hike out ... go to the car ... do some jumping-jacks ... roll up in your collapsed tent ... go to a hotel.

DO NOT WEAR CLOTHES IN YOUR SLEEPING BAG!

why?

First, warm air is trapped too close to your body and it takes longer (if ever) for the rest of the bag to warm up, so your legs and arms stay cold because they do not get the heat from your much warmer torso through convection and radiation. Second, if you wear too many clothes, you sweat, the sweat evaporates and cools your body.

I'm not an expert. But I was born and grew up in Siberia. Speaking from experience, I would NEVER put extra clothes on when I'm sleeping in a bag. I'd put them under and/or on the bag.

Spot on, wearing more clothing inside your sleeping bag will only make you colder because it will hold on to your sweat.
Ideally if you are going to wear clothes in your sleeping bag you want to be wearing stuff that you have not worn during the day and that is dry.

With this type of method you would likely be wearing quick dry clothing that does not hold on to sweat long. If your sweating inside your bag there is a decent possibility that you are also not cold, or you need wear clothing on the extremities that get cold faster.

i kno u posted this comment a while ago but why would you put cloths underneath the sleeping bag

Finally a sane video on sleeping bags and not some creepy crawly guys wearing tight nylon clothing.

Thanks for those tips. A sleeping bag can keep you warm or freeze you right out of enjoying camping.
