Do the Lawsuit to the Paint Provider & Mitsubishi for paint that wont last 10yr warranty as it was advertised for & for not serious action Cost of repaint car $1000 on average by Mitsubishi times number of cars made since 1996-2004. if you win you're rich and its very moral to file that case to teach company a lesson who uses people's money (Stocks) to create fault equipment. Because it makes sense they Company ignored FDA approved paint and continued to use cheap paint.
paint delamination rules im about to buy a 2003 black eclipse coupe gts with all options and 80k miles for $2500, dealer estimated the fix of delamination and many scratches to be $4000. Im gona do all the work myself and save, good project first car
Im a detailer and i drive a 2006 Eclipse (Black). My Car started doing this. Its a paint defect from Mitsubishi, I keep Polish and Wax/Sealer on my car all year round. However my car started fading on the A-Pillar about a month ago. The back breaking point is my car is just out of warranty. Its sad Mitsubishi won't cover this problem or use better paint. The car will be paid off and sold with in the year. After I hit up Maaco and let the fix the faded/peeling A-piller.
guys this is a mitsubishi problem, if you buy one with paint defects like i did, replace the hood with carbon fiber, and repaint the roof and trunk. The car will look awesome and that is truly where the paint problems are, the rest of the car does not peel easily. Next, buy a car cover and there you go, no paint problems
I have an 02 Galant. Bought it brand new and have taken really good care of the car. I religiously washed and waxed the car as well as parking it in our garage and my delamination also started about the 5 year mark. It looks absolutely awful now and don't really have $1500 to get it painted. My dash also has a big crack across the middle that I have covered with a mat. I will also be posting a video of my car to increase exposure to their crappy products.
This definitley is a paint defect not them just not caring for it i have the same car same color and its doing the same exact thing i see it on all black 03 eclipses
I've heard about this. I actually think it only happens on the black and silver paint jobs. I don't know that, but that is my general assumption based on what I've seen and heard. Is it true that Mits only put on one base coat for those two colors? If so, that's why the primer is eating through the base. Mits just got lazy on black and silver it seems to me.
It's from washing your car when its hot, or washing it in the sun. You all that are suing Mitsubishi are idiots and don't know how to take care of your cars.
You, my friend, are an idiot. That is why Mitsubishi is giving out checks to everyone who fills out some paperwork. Granted it is only a few hundred bucks, but atleast they know they messed up their paint jobs.
@GotRiceBoy Nope. I've washed a black pickup truck in the sun before, and that is the exact same thing that happened to the vehicle as what happened to the eclipse, so your full of shit.
i have the same issue on my 03 eclipse. this is definitely not a sunspot issue. it is my first car and i have taken care of it like it was my own baby lol. always been stored in my garage and never outside
My ex has a black 2001 eclipse that is doing the same thing, only its 10 times worse. The delamination spreads over more and more of the car as time goes by. Sad. I really like these cars.
It's called sunspots. Any car of any make and model will get it if it's not garage or carport kept. Mitsubishi will do nothing for you....it is what it is. Deal with it.
They aren't called 'sunspots', dummy. It's delamination. Mitsubishi isn't doing much about it, but they are doing something.
I have a 2002 Galant and I submitted my paperwork for the lawsuit. I got my settlement offer which says they will cover 40% up to $300 of a new paint job. It really isn't worth getting a $1000+ paint job for my car now that it is 9 years old. I will take the settlement, however and pay $500 or so for new paint or so while Mitsubishi pays for the rest.
Our black Eclipse is in the advanced stage of (Bad Paint) your Black will start to turn white ! We are going to put are car in front of our near by Mits dealer this week and let the Customers see what they are going to get ! attorneyblack@yahoo.com
We had the same problem with our 05 Endeavor. We took it to our local dealer and the service manager acted as though he'd never heard of this problem. About 1 week later, I received the proposed class action settlement. I almost went for it, then the word "proposed" sank in... I then wrote objection letters to the court and attorneys, including the lovely Mr. Katriel. Has anyone received notice in the mail about the ruling?
3 years ago i had an 01 eclipse rs blk,and it had the same problems...sad for a nice ass car :( this is my favorite car but i think next time i buy a car it wont be a mitsubishi bc they had alot of issues from body to mechanical...
Marshal you didn;t get a god damned check for 4k..........the reinbursement was based on repaint and how far out of warranty ect and mileage.
What warranty, I have the same problem, I took the 150 or w/e cash........a repaint would cost about 3k so fawk mitsu if they don't want to hold up their end of this.
Just a comment for those of you out there who claim this car was not cared for - check out my other channel under rjnedved - see the corvette in there? Or go to my website, rjnmotorsports(dot)com - see the super clean hummer? This eclipse was cared for the same way - the exact reason I took the time to post this video. Further, I got a letter today regarding a class action settlement against Mitsu for this exact problem.. So take your uninformed comments elsewhere, please.
my eclipse gt is 2002 black and it looks a little worse than yours and all i have to say is if i don't get the money i deserve i'll make mitsubishi hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, that i swear!!!
its for all black mitsubishi eclipse from 2001-2008. so get that shit checked out. its a faulty paint they used on ALL the black eclipses or some shit. god damn you mitsubishi. but either way check with your dealer, delaminating or not you still get reimbursed.
Just got my class action lawsuit letter in the mail. either call your dealer about it or go on their website. just got a check for $4000 in the mail because it hasnt delaminated yet. they're offering free repainting or cash.
Maybe if you put some wax on it and not park it in the sun for all hrs of the day, plus its an eclipse there expensive to paint fix etc. maybe you should have bought some cheap junk honda
I dont know what planet you are from but no complete paint job cost $9000.00 and no spot spray cost $2700.00. Thats a whole lot of BS. I Have an 2001 Eclipse and the paint is fine. Keeping the car clean will help alot to maintain your paint. And Mitsubishi is great company and has a pretty good warranty, its not there concern if you dont keep your car clean and if you park it in the sun.
PT.3- Usually the paint under the clearcoat is dull, so it won't have the shine like the undamaged clearcoat., BUT my car's paint is protected from future damage for a while. I bought some Mother's Back to Black to protect the rubber on the car. Some dripped onto the dull paint and I noticed it became glossy! So... I put a coat of Mother's all over the dull paint and it really looks pretty good. It's an oily base and I don't know how long the shine will last, but I've got more. Hope this helps.
PT.2- Here's what I did for $25.00. I got most of the damaged clearcoat off by using 2" carton sealing tape (available at Office Depot, etc.) Sticking it down on the bad clearcoat and ripping it off like a bodybuilder taking the hair off his chest! Voila! Off comes the clearcoat. (Don't do this on a hot car as the adhesive will melt and stay on the car) After getting the clearcoat off, I used QMI deoxidizer on the exposed base coat, then QMI Paint Sealant to protect the paint.
PT.1- Don't blame the paint job. Your clearcoat has separated from the base coat, probably due to parking the car outside in the sun. I had the same problem, but didn't want to spend thousands on a paint job. I just wanted to make sure it didn't get any worse and start to rust through. I checked online to find some way to get the damaged clearcoat off without harming the base coat underneath. Everyone said it can't be done. Anything that would disolve the clearcoat would disolve the paint too.
my 2005 eclipse is doing the same thing. noticed the spots starting less than a year ago and it has taken over almost ALL of my hood and my roof is now starting to rust. what's funny is that most of my spots are lined up the same as yours. i'm taking it in today to see what they'll tell me. i'm within my 5yr bumper to bumper, but over 50k miles. i'm the original owner and my car is otherwise in great condition.
Same thing with my 2006 black Mitsubishi Endeavor, was turned down on a car that is 2 years old?? The Mitsubishi mechanic said it was not prepared properly prior to painting the car.... $31,000 for an SUV that looks 15 years old =(
I have on '01 black, and its doing the same thing on the trunk... $9k is alot.. I wud recommend going to the auto body dept. of a community college and let them paint it.. (if u trust them) but i have seen the work they have done here locally so im on their waiting list.
I have a 2003 Eclipse that looks almost like your GF car. Mitsu turned me down as well. I'm soo upset with them, will NEVER buy another Mitsubishi again!
Did you go with getting the car painted or did you hear from Mitsubishi?
I have a 2004 galant same problem.Complained to Mit for weeks with no results.Never buy Mit ever again.A paint job done right should last at least 10 yrs.
OK first off, elementalMama should stop speakin cuz she sounds ridiculous lol! Second off, this problem is only prevalent among BLACK eclipses around this one's time frame. The problem is due to the fact that all the black paint jobs didn't receive clear coats, causing abnormal and rapid wearing and oxidation of the paint. And im not sure where you'd find a $100 paint job unless ur a MORON and think u can just go to ur local hardware store and pick up a few cans of spray paint.
this is what happens when you sit on the hood, and hit your car with your hands.. they are impack marks from way back.. they only show as a slight dent, until they soak and degrade from RAIN. get a $100 paint job.. keep looking.. the quotes you got are HIGH priced. you can almost find a joe someplace to paint it for a caig of beer!
i have a 98 eclipse and a 94 eclipse, the PAINT IS FINE!.. your paint is screwed because your girlfriend didn't tell you, those are impact sites of warped body! that was soaked by lots and lots of rain.. get a car cover.
thats a nice car... but i live in ohio too.. if you try washing the salt of in the winter the paint wont fade... and yes wash the IN the winter as soon as theres a break in the weather try and get all of it of this helps.. so stop crying... i know a few auto body shops that are much cheaper and do great work so dont talk shit if you dont know how good other work...
DON'T BUY MITSUBISHI CARS-WORST VEHICLE ON THE MARKET -CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!!! Post this everywhere. They know there is a problem and won't enact a "recall" and refuse to repair if the car is out of warranty. My car only has 36,000 miles and almost 5 yrs old. By the comments posted many, people are having the same negative result from the MFG. Can a "class action" law suit be an option? As one we have no power and getting the blow off, together we may get them to react to this problem.
dude i got a 2003 eclipse gts with a nice black non faded paint job! no problems what so ever! personaly i think ur just talkin out of your ass because you or someone you know has a deep hatred for japanese and japanese car manufacturers! well i have news for ya buddy mitsubishi will be around alot longer than chevrolet or dodge. say u buy a 1999 or a 2005 or a brand new dodge right...u ganna be payin more to have that fixed everytime somethin goes wrong
When was the last time your girlfriend properly maintained the paint on this car? My guess is that this car is rarely washed, never waxed and sits out in the sun all day.
1/20/09-i have the same problem with my 2003 black eclipse convertable. The hood paint is fading so bad my mechanic ask me if the car was in a fire. Now the paint is starting to fade on the rear/side. I only have 36,000 miles on the car. I will post pictures/video as soon as I get them uploaded on my computer.
Excuse me cu4abud, before you go making false comments, do some research. This is a huge problem with Mitsubishi. Car care or lack there of has nothing to do with it. Why should we have to pay for the paint jobs?! Its all Mitsubishi's fault and they admit to the problem. I am working on getting my 2003 eclipse repaired right now.
hey jdog1129....any luck with Mitsubishi repairing your 2003 elcipse? I was turned down today for this paint problem. Th reason was "out of warranty." I am curious how you made out.
I have a black 2000 Eclipse with only 50K miles which has been well-maintained. The paint looks JUST like this and wondering what to do at this point.
I have a 3000GT with over 225K miles on it with the factory paint that shines great. Only the spoiler is not as glossy as the rest of the car. I think they started to cheapen the quality in the late 90s.
Anyway, whatever kind of car you get in the future buy a quality ($250+) car cover for it to protect it from sunlight. The UV rays and heat destory the paint and the interior materials.
On this one; get a cheaper paint job and sell it to recover some money. As is it won't sell easy
Just think of all the time and effort you've put into trying to get somwbody else to pay for your lack of maintainence to the vehicle, you could have been out there polishing/waxing the vehicle as stated in the owners manual.
Every black/dark coloured car does this, BMW, Ford, GM they all do it,,,,IF you don't maintain it!!!!
Grow up and take some responsibility for things your still making payments on....
you can avoid this by keeping your car in the garage on hot sunny days and if you repaint it it probly wont happen again if you use higher qaulity paint
I have the same car with the same problem! I have a couple years left of payments and the car looks like crap. What are we supposed to do? Any ideas? Has any one gotten anywhere with this?
Omg I have a red eclipse and I am having the same problem on my spoiler!!!! I also went to get estimates and they said about $2500 for the whole car!!! I feel you on this!!
Well I got a. Eclipse gt 2000 black with the same problem. The spoiler the trunk and the top edges have the same problem. And the side neer the gas pump also it looks like clouds. I can send pictures maybe a video later. Dam if I repaint it will it happen again?
between 2000 and 2004 the black and few red eclipse have defective paint issues...i work in the automotive industry and have a dark grey eclipse 2003 and the paints fine. what you need to do is wright to mitsubishi's main offices and explain you case. i know for a fact that if any automotive manufacturer has a hi ammount of cases that are the same they will fix their problems. if you do your research you will find that this is very common and mitsubishi will take care of it.
Same problem with my 2000 Galant! I purchased the extended warranty for 100,000 miles & they still won't cover it! Some how paint isn't covered in this!? This was as of last year! I will sent some pics that I sent to mitsu with no aval!
I have a 2001 black gallant, same problems. The car looks like crap, the paint on the roof and trunk is all gone. it seems like I can only drive it at night and when it rains. I am so sick of it. I am actually thinking of taking to maaco and just get a spray over, dont know how much that will cost me
That's not fair, they should cover that. Our niece is looking at a (very cheap) used car that has this issue. She needs transportation and doesn't mind it looking like that, but will it eventually cause further issues, like rust?
I have a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT Black with only 45k mi. well cared for. It's been Delaminating or turning white for years, starting I think after the warrantee expired.
We are not alone!
I understand that there are many, many others in this same situation.
I also have an 18-Year-old 1994 Ford Mustang GT with 36,000 miles, also well cared for that still looks like showroom new! But remember that Ford is made in America!
So consider that if you ever consider buying a Mitsubishi!
So sorry to see what has happened to this eclipse. :-( I also have a 2003 Eclipse, but it's the GTS model and it's grey with approx 65,000 miles on it. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems with the paint.. yet. Before I bought my car, I did a little research and found that many other people were having issues with the paint, but mainly with the black and red colors. I opted for the grey and have had good luck so far. Very sorry to see what has happened with yours.
My moms 2003 Mitsubishi Galant has the exact same problem. The car is perfect otherwise, but the roof has the same paint deterioration as your Eclipse. The hood isnt showing any signs yet but the trunk is and its really a shame that this paint problem is there because that is the only thing wrong with it.
mitsubishi needs to pay for a repaint rather than get bad publicity for this. I won't ever by a mitsu, chrysler or mazda. That whole body repaint quote is crazy. It should only cost about a $3K to $4K for a good repaint but yeah thats still not cheap. Also avoid black cars. Have you seen a daily driven car thats 8 years old car with original black paint that looked clean? The black soaks in the sunlight and basically bakes your car. Thats bad on the electronics, seals and hoses under the hood.
I absolutely agree. So far I've been able to collect several other examples of similar vehicles through e-mail pictures.
The saga will continue, we took the car to another shop the other day who has informed us that the problem is actually not clearcoat delamination - it's the primer/undercoat eating up through the base coat.
We are getting them to put in writing the issue, because their claim is that Mitsubishi could easily go back on the paint manufacturer and get this resolved.
I cannot believe I ran across this video today. I have been going to several sights on the 2003 mitsubishi eclipse paint jobs. I have the same problem. I would have to say mine is in far worse condition and about 200 miles more than your girlfriends car. I will be able to send pictures soon I just haven't taken any yet. I take excellent care of my car and for this to happen just makes me sick. My entire roof which has the sun roof is terrible and the ENTIRE hood ruined! Please respond!
In the interest of being fair, I added a video annotation to illustrate that the manufacture date of this vehicle was August of 2002. Total vehicle age is almost 6 years, although we have not owned it that long.

Painting , priming or too much humidity in the drying process is my unsolicited opinion.
Recently stripped down my old Benz which started to show signs of this delamination at the 22 year mark with a 180K miles.
Oh and I live in Florida aka the Sunshine State.
Go get 'em and GOOD LUCK with it...

my 2005 eclipse is doing the same thing. noticed the spots starting less than a year ago and it has taken over almost ALL of my hood and my roof is now starting to rust. what's funny is that most of my spots are lined up the same as yours. i'm taking it in today to see what they'll tell me. i'm within my 5yr bumper to bumper, but over 50k miles. i'm the original owner and my car is otherwise in great condition.

And im not sure where you'd find a $100 paint job unless ur a MORON and think u can just go to ur local hardware store and pick up a few cans of spray paint.
w119jbs 2 years ago
this is what happens when you sit on the hood, and hit your car with your hands.. they are impack marks from way back.. they only show as a slight dent, until they soak and degrade from RAIN. get a $100 paint job.. keep looking.. the quotes you got are HIGH priced. you can almost find a joe someplace to paint it for a caig of beer!
elementalMama 2 years ago
i have a 98 eclipse and a 94 eclipse, the PAINT IS FINE!.. your paint is screwed because your girlfriend didn't tell you, those are impact sites of warped body! that was soaked by lots and lots of rain.. get a car cover.

As one we have no power and getting the blow off, together we may get them to react to this problem.

dude i got a 2003 eclipse gts with a nice black non faded paint job! no problems what so ever! personaly i think ur just talkin out of your ass because you or someone you know has a deep hatred for japanese and japanese car manufacturers! well i have news for ya buddy mitsubishi will be around alot longer than chevrolet or dodge. say u buy a 1999 or a 2005 or a brand new dodge right...u ganna be payin more to have that fixed everytime somethin goes wrong
its pretty cheap to fix a mitsu!!!

I am working on getting my 2003 eclipse repaired right now.
jdog1129 3 years ago
hey jdog1129....any luck with Mitsubishi repairing your 2003 elcipse? I was turned down today for this paint problem. Th reason was "out of warranty." I am curious how you made out.
QUEENYNAD 3 years ago
I finally heard back from them today. I was turned down as well.

I have a black 2000 Eclipse with only 50K miles which has been well-maintained. The paint looks JUST like this and wondering what to do at this point.
gempdx 3 years ago

Grow up and take some responsibility for things your still making payments on....
cu4abud 3 years ago 2
I drive BMWs all the time for work, of all years, and what you just said, is a LOAD OF SHIT.
coryfont 2 years ago
you can avoid this by keeping your car in the garage on hot sunny days and if you repaint it it probly wont happen again if you use higher qaulity paint
EXPLICIT000 3 years ago
I have the same car with the same problem! I have a couple years left of payments and the car looks like crap. What are we supposed to do? Any ideas? Has any one gotten anywhere with this?
jdog1129 3 years ago
Omg I have a red eclipse and I am having the same problem on my spoiler!!!! I also went to get estimates and they said about $2500 for the whole car!!! I feel you on this!!
lijahrock 3 years ago
Well I got a. Eclipse gt 2000 black with the same problem. The spoiler the trunk and the top edges have the same problem. And the side neer the gas pump also it looks like clouds. I can send pictures maybe a video later. Dam if I repaint it will it happen again?
kelvinfplatano 3 years ago
between 2000 and 2004 the black and few red eclipse have defective paint issues...i work in the automotive industry and have a dark grey eclipse 2003 and the paints fine. what you need to do is wright to mitsubishi's main offices and explain you case. i know for a fact that if any automotive manufacturer has a hi ammount of cases that are the same they will fix their problems. if you do your research you will find that this is very common and mitsubishi will take care of it.

Same problem with my 2000 Galant! I purchased the extended warranty for 100,000 miles & they still won't cover it! Some how paint isn't covered in this!? This was as of last year! I will sent some pics that I sent to mitsu with no aval!

told u to buy it red, j/k good luck with the fixing.

I have a 2001 black gallant, same problems. The car looks like crap, the paint on the roof and trunk is all gone. it seems like I can only drive it at night and when it rains. I am so sick of it. I am actually thinking of taking to maaco and just get a spray over, dont know how much that will cost me
NEVER NEVER BUY ANOTHER MITSUBISHI.
sshen12 3 years ago
That's not fair, they should cover that. Our niece is looking at a (very cheap) used car that has this issue. She needs transportation and doesn't mind it looking like that, but will it eventually cause further issues, like rust?
motleyfewl 3 years ago

Very sorry to see what has happened with yours.
kanga072 3 years ago
My moms 2003 Mitsubishi Galant has the exact same problem. The car is perfect otherwise, but the roof has the same paint deterioration as your Eclipse. The hood isnt showing any signs yet but the trunk is and its really a shame that this paint problem is there because that is the only thing wrong with it.

that's messed up, sorry to see ya having problems:(

mitsubishi needs to pay for a repaint rather than get bad publicity for this.
IDBNVS2 3 years ago
