  • Consider me a "phan" who originally had hard time liking this one. Over the years, I warmed up to it. I think the way in which the medieval and sci-fi elements are meshed in this one, while different from the rest, is just awesome. Come on... generational medieval societies inside domed habitats on a gigantic spaceship? I love it! A significant landmark for early-90s RPGs despite it's flaws. It also has my favorite theme song of the entire franchise.

  • ok so I lied about killing my cartridge =P I played it anyways and actually beat it today! It was alright. I still stand by my complaints about the game, it was just hard to get it into it. but once you get the hang of this game it's actually pretty enjoyable. on to PS4!

  • this version looks a lot better though

  • Is it just me or is this the worst game ever made? I can't begin to count the flaws in the programming, the horrendously monotone graphics (towns), the annoying battle theme, the f*ed up encounter rate, saving, exp division, Antidote spell not working, the inn, etc

PS 1 and 2 had major flaws as well but this is where I drew the line. I tried REALLY hard to like it and play, but I couldn't make it through more than 2 hours before I ripped out the GBA cartridge and stomped on it. It is unplayable

  • i have sega mega drive the game for psp and it has alot of clasic sega games like sonic the hedghog 1 and two and has phantasy star 1,2 and 3. i really like these games so im going to try all the games there is for phantasy star

  • That dungeon theme is the greatest RPG dungeon theme ever!

  • the best game of genesis (mega drive) eve made

  • Was PS III created by a different bunch of people than the other PS games on the Genesis and MasterSystem? Apart from the epic main theme music which I love, this game seems kinda rushed, especially the battle screen, and the uninspired surrounding environments- Nothing but empty, open caverns, castles, over-worlds. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the series. Just my worthless two cents. :)

  • @scottievand The assistant producer of 1 & 2 was in charge of this one with his own dev team. I think a lot of the seemingly rushed elements came at the cost of all of their concentration on the generational system and the large cast of characters while trying to fit it all into the available storage space on the cartridge. Basically, it was a grandiose vision of a game made for the limited technology of the day. If this had been on Sega CD, it would have stood a chance of being 10 times better.

  • i buy the short sword and get rid of the knife right away

  • The song at the beginning reminds me of Amazing by Aerosmith.

  • I see, in that regard the tone you used make more sense now (not that it's any more reasonable still, but anger makes anyone prone to losing reason).

It wasn't directly stated in the game, but Dark Force was behind the destruction of Palma (surprise surprise) to weaken the planetary seal. Indeed a single satellite might not destroy a whole planet, but Dark Force's influence certainly did the trick. This alone set up the plots for PSIII and PSIV.

No spoilers, because it's the Internet D: .

  • "A lot of people hate it because it's so different compared to Phantasy Star 2"

These people are idiots. 2 SUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED. It was long, frustrating, and EXTREMELY boring. To think that this was the FF7 of the early 90's makes me sick.

I say this because I've heard it talked about so many times in the past and even featured on several BEST GAME EVAR!!!111ONEONEONE lists...much like FF7 is to this day. The only difference though? FF7 was a decent game. PS2 is NOWHERE near decent. It's ASS.

  • @Jazzypants2007 I did enjoy PSIII alright, but not as far as dissing at PSII, which was awesome. I think you're just having an awful manner of expressing your tastes, so I can't really take your opinion seriously. And considering your age, it's absolutely shameful, really :T .

PSIII was different from PSII, which is true: people won't necessarily get the same impression from the two games. I don't see why you're mad over this, that's really not an excuse to try speaking for all the fans >>; .

  • @GamerTBDF To each his own. I HATED the game, so I said it was ass. Yes, I went too far by calling the people who liked it idiots. Yes, the people who didn't like PS3 have justified reasons for hating it. Even I'll fucking admit PS3 has plot holes large enough to fly the Alisa-III through. IMO, it still made more sense than

    ***SPOILERS***

Fucking Palma EXPLODING because a damn satellite crashed into it.

    ***END SPOILERS***

  • @GamerTBDF To continue my spoiler from the previous post

    ***SPOILERS***

At worst, the satellite crashing into Palma (Or was it a space station? I don't remember) would have destroyed a large chunk of the surface and caused a never ending nuclear winter in which the entire population of the planet would die slowly and painfully. It wouldn't make the planet explode.

    ***END SPOILER***

I'll give you the credit you deserve, you didn't fire back on me with OMG U SUXXORS, and (cont)

  • @GamerTBDF (cont) made a valid point. I had some shit going down last month when i made this post and was far more aggressive about my hatred for PS2 than any fan of it deserved, so I apologize for being so crass about it.

  • @Jazzypants2007 Also, apology accepted :3 .

  • This game was my first RPG and blew me away. I work in the game industry (so i know my games) and I still regard this as one of the best rpgs out there.

  • The battles in number 2 look much better

  • @flaming30 Considering the background sucks in the battle screen, not by much. The only thing 2 has over 3 in battles is that you can actually see your characters. WHOOP DE SHIT.

  • I just picked this up in a gamestation in birmingham, cant wait to play it :D

  • this game is awesome

  • used to play the fck outta this on sega channel

  • weird how this one was the least popular of the series, i played all of them and i enjoyed this one the most :)

  • I thought the choice of different game paths was awesome and way ahead of it's time (like Ultima IV for the various computer systems). PS3 is a very underrated and overlooked game. Thanks much for sharing. I play it from time to time via emulator.

  • This is a game a have nothing but fond memories of: both for the game and the age I was when I played it. Even got all the endings. That said, I've never replayed it - I remember it as a hard slog with the rewards few and far between. I'd probably play 2 or 4 again before this.

  • I just got the original Phantasy star for my Sms :D can't wait to get 2 3 and 4!!

  • i was thinking about getting this on my Wii but i think im used to PSO ep 1&2

  • Mieu looks HOT =)

  • What to do. (x 2) You either marry your Orakian once-forsaken first love or marry the amnesiac Layan princess, your choices may affect your story. That's in part 1 (1st generation).

  • I agree this game is underrated I love how the main character changes to, its lkike playing a third string, second string lol

  • I just got this boxed, perfect condition £14 on ebay, YAY! awesome game, thanks for posting these playthrough videos. =D

  • epic fuckin game

  • Is it familair with PS0

  • It's too bad the Sega Ages remakes of the Phantasy Star series stopped; this was the one game in the series that needs a remake most of all, IMHO. Imagine this game with a more fleshed out story, an improved technique system and better overall game balance. It might've ended up better than PSIV.

  • I bought it recently, and i'm liking it so far. my only complaints are

    the dialog is way oversimplified.

    healing only works "sometimes"

and whoever made the battle music had ADHD [keeps changing]

  • THe intro/title is really nice

  • rofl, "cool off in the dungeon for a while" ¬¬

  • the best phantasy star I've ever played in mega, no more

  • PS3 was the very first Phantasy Star game I had ever played, and it was the best of all of them that I had played. I kept trying out the other ones, yet they never compared to PS3. I loved the ability to choose who to marry three times, leaving so many different possible endings and games. It also made PS3 replayable just to choose different marraiges and play through the extra storylines. They also made it so that, after marraige, the children had a combination of their parents' abilities.

  • The only thing i don't like about this game are the battles. Excellent background and character design. I even like the inventory layout. But the battles disappoint me. I tried playing this game through, i seriously tried. But i cannot finish it. The creaters of Phantasy Star 3 destroyed the battle sequence. I love everything else about it though.

  • Why does the intro sound so familiar? Is it in another Phantasy Star game?

  • @SubtleDemise That intro sounds a bit like the first Ep 4 stage on Phantasy Star Blue Burst when you aren't in a battle.

  • His own father locks him in the dungeon. What an asshole.

  • "No one has seen a Layan in 1000 years!"

What about the one that just captured Maia?

  • I loved PSIII but the monsters on there were some of the most idiotic designs I have ever seen in a video game.

  • one of the best games i played back in the old good days

  • Comment removed

  • I remember playing this on the PS2 genesis collection.

It had a nice story and pretty good music, I'll give it that.

However, the combat seemed really cheap and poorly executed compared to the other games. I mean seriously, most of the attack spells were useless, not to mention the enemies had really bad attack animations.

    I'd give it like a generous 3/5.

  • I agree this game is too underrated. I think in all its seriousness it's a beautiful and warm game with a great atmosphere and art design, music that stays with you for decades (very classical oriented), romance...

I've never connected the Phantasy Star games only with the future, nor with "funny" anime. I watch mostly realistic anime such as Jin-Roh and the Samurai X prequels. My theory is it was simply too "European" for the Japanese audience but corect me if someone knows something more.

  • I need to be in the right mood to play PSIII...had issues with the technique system...most damage techs even when fully altered rarely kept up with pure weapon damage. Heal techs cost too much TP and Anti was never 100% effective (hated that.) The final generation was basically the same quest just started at a different point of the plot...I agree though. PSIII would've benefitted the most from an overhaul. Many places could be improved upon.

  • One thing I loved is the way the world map music built up with each addition to your party, with instruments representing each character.

  • "Seemingly minor event"

Do women wash up on shores frequently, then?

  • OK! So he swears to rescue his bribe and his father throws him into the dungeon for that. Right...

  • King; Your love has been taken from you, to the dungen! MUWAHAHAHAHA

    Rhys: Dad wtf!

  • This game was great and very underrated. It wasn't as great as the early FF's, but great on its own.

  • LOL I want to try that trick with the escapipe! I never knew that, that's hilarious!!!

I thought this game was alright. I've played this game more than PSII though (I never owned that one).

PSIV was always my favorite, I played the hell outta that one.

  • heh I just tried that trick on my PSP Genesis Collection version of the game and I would have never thought of doing it. Anyways this is what the king says:

"You used your escapipe! Normally, a smart move but now I'm afraid the game can't be continued. Please press the reset button and try again."

You can also try and talk to the guards and two out of the six will simply result in "..." while the othe four it just says "Nothing unusual here."

    That's a really amusing trick.

  • Phantasy Star III has superb music. And the game starting off in a medieval setting is intentional as the people do not know the truth about the world they live in.

Its also IMHO graphically the best PSO game (it edges out PSIV IMHO) it looks lush and detailed.

Though it is odd that there are so many caves and temples in the landscapes which you cannot enter. Its quite a short game though does have very good replay value.

The battle system takes some time to get the hang of.

  • Even though 3 wasn't my favorite, it has some very good parts in it. And for some reason the music is amazing. I've never beat it because I'm pretty much stuck at the beginning (and have been for the past many years of playing it and was too lazy to look up walkthroughs)...but now you've awakened me to play it again after I beat PS2 again. Much thanks hahaha XD

  • OMFG "I have been waiting 1000 years for you. Only a descendent of Oracia can Command me" holy cow how in the world did she survived even a cyborg need food or oil or something lol

  • your future wife has just been taken from you! go to the dungeons! lol jk, very cool game :D

  • I absolutely love this game!!

  • PSIII's failings in opinion were the awful combat animations/music (what happened to the backs of the characters?).

The story deviation wasn't all that bad as it explained the differences in Palmans: the tech-oriented Orakians and the Magic-Oriented Layans (though they should have used magic instead of Techniques).

It's a shame SEGA totally dropped the ball on their Generations re-make series because this could have benefited from a new coat of paint to help integrate with the others.

  • The music to these games are so amazing.

  • Well, let's just say this game's battlesystem is funny and very confusing. Perhaps that is the reason why not many people liked this game about. I didn't get too far in this game.

  • I did man was it a pain in the rear!

  • Hey man, I like you for posting this. If you get stuck, you can contact me. ;)

  • I've played it before, I won't get stuck. :p

  • You choose the games that aren`t yet on Youtube thats awesome i subscribed you i have to see how the 3rd game is i only played and completed the 1st Phantasy star Game.

  • @FFL2and3rocks Then isn't the Play through #1 title a lie.

  • @toad773 The number in the title means this is the first video of my Phantasy Star III playthrough videos. So the second video will say #2, and the one after that will say #3, and so on.

  • i remember playing this when i was a kid

  • I love the music that starts at 4:44

  • Phantasy Star III was rougher around the edges than a freshly sawed-off 2 by 4...but it was still infinitely superior to the drudgery that was Phantasy Star II! Sonic 2006is Sega's worst sequel ever? Please. PS2 won that distinction long ago....

  • lol i loved PS2 i loved that battle system and it had a great storyline

  • @megagrey

I loved PSII, it was my first MD RPG.

besides, sega's worst sequel would have to go to Nights: Journey into Dreams. I'm not saying this because its bad [actually JoD's gameplay is rather decent], I'm saying this because after 10 years of waiting for a true sequel, JoD felt rushed, theres more minigames in it than the actaul gameplay, the cat boss, and it being criminally short. at least with sonic, your expectations weren't too high.

  • The music is soooooo catchy in these games.
