I remember this movie from cable when I was 10 or 12 and really felt for Gary - it's a tough position to be in when you fall for someone who doesn't want you back. But does that make Karen a bitch? As I got older I learned a crucial lesson - if someone doesn't return your interest, that person is not for you. One of life's hardest realizations but healthy and freeing when you reach it.

Here's my ending: Rick breaks up with her again. Gary squeals on Karen's parents about her abortion and they disown her. Eventually, she becomes a local prostitute. Gary takes legal action against her for the $250. She tells the judge it was a gift but Judge Judy ain't having it. Afterwards, Gary uses the $250 to purchase a whole night with Karen in which he fist fucks her with the $80 gift. Then, Gary finds another Karen in school, gives her the gift, and fucks her as well. The End.

This soundtrack is great, I love the Oingo Boingo songs and the poster in the movie. The lesson, last American virgin, the nice guy will be last. It is realistic you have to admit. Karen didn't care at the end about Gary. She had that look on her face like "I'm sorry, I know I'm easy, but we will never be more than friends."
1982 was a great year in movies. I dont think I've seen a year since full of so many great flicks. I must've lived in the movie theaters that summer. A list of the flicks: Last American Virgin, Fast Times...Ridgemont High, Blade Runner, Officer & a Gentleman, ET, The Thing, even a forgotten cheapy "Beach Girls" which I used to get in for a 10:AM dollar viewing. What a great time.

Oof! Watched this last night on VH1 and it took me back to prom, just as it did when I saw it for the first time in '85. Best soundtrack that fits a movie ever and the most realistic ending ever along with being one almost every person has experienced. This movie reiterated the lesson I learned from my high school sweetheart. Most women (and men) will go to the person who's a challenge, not the person that puts them on a pedestal. Call it "nice guys finish last" if you want, but it's the truth.
This film is the only realistic teenage film every made. The actors are actually teenagers. Then life doesn't go right for the hero, just like real life for all of us. I think everyone can relate to the heart break which runs through this film. It is high school in so many ways.

The movie is clearly a 5 star film, cheesy in places, funny with teen innocence. However it's not clear to me why the script called for Karen to self-destruct at the ending by going back to the boy that abandons her in her greatest time of need and creates a duplicitous character when Gary professes his love for her adn she kisses him. That makes her either manipulative backstabber or completely stupid - either of which destroys the innocence of the film - it should've ended after the vacation.
but thats what makes the film so good. i couldve easily predicted that they would get together in the end despite her past and hava happy ending, but, this movie was filled with surprises

When I watched the movie for the first time, when I was 11, I was shocked. But despite of the sad ending, I just thought it was perfect. Then, as I grew up, I could realize how much of this ending correspond to reality when it comes to female behavior. In fact, this movie is considered by me one of my very first lessons about women and how to deal with them. I like this ending even more nowadays.
After all of that, what did Gary get? In life, the nice guy finishes last.

Interesting points, Tetly007. There is an excellent 1972 film starring Pamela Sue Martin titled "To Find A Man" which covers some of the same elements that are in this film. But it's handled and played in a very different,, but also touching, way.
It's a hard film to find, it's not on DVD yet so I had to make a copy from my VHS tape of it - which looks like it was made from a faded film print,.. Amazon has it via video-on-demand, but not on DVD. Great little-known 70s film.
I remember when this movie came out. They left the lights off when the movie ended, all the girls were crying. I was like....15 or 16 years old. The songs in the movie bring back lots of memories of the 1980s.
WoW. I just saw this movie right here on youtube for the first time ever 2 months ago. When this movie came out in 1982 i was living in another country (Guyana) & was only 8 years old at the time. Good movie. The only teen movie known to have a sad ending.
I wouldn't put those films in the "teen" genre for a few reasons, IVSolar, including that they're both "biopics" based on tragic true stories - "happy endings" were not an option for them as it is in this film.
Also I think most folks have something diff in mind when they think of the term "teen movie". Something like "American Graffiti", "Porky's", this movie, and others down the years with the same feel.

I really dunno, IVSolar - I never saw it! Actually I'm more a fan of 70s movies - ABC Movies Of The Week, some cheesy horror, odd B films,, little-known flix, things like that. Also some real gems from that era and more than a few great coming-of-age/ teen movies. What's great about the internet era is how many you'll find of those 70s flicks to either download or buy from somewhere like Ebay.
Yeah, I can see the elements especially in the first half of the film or so, DirzoRasec, where there's a lot of craziness and silly goings-on.
When I think of 80s teen flicks, I think in the vein of "Porky's", where that "goofiness" theme is a constant througout the movie. In this film, you don't have that - it twists & turns and instead you get a coming of age story; a tragic comedy with a gut-wrenching ending.

Certainly this film was made for a teenage audience. But I think most anyone can appreciate the story, like the film I mentioned in a comment below, "To Find A Man". (Except that movie was more for mature-minded teens, it's not a "teens go wild-type" flick.)
Well...if you really stop to consider it, all Gary lost was a few possessions and some of his pride...but I seriously doubt it would "turn him off women" forever. He just met the wrong girl. On the other hand, Karen is probably going on to a life being with guys who treat her like dirt--she got (and will continue to get) the worst of it.
Personally, if it were me, I would have been getting it on with Victor. He may be a dork, but he's got hotness (great butt) and probably some loyalty.

Oof! Watched this last night on VH1 and it took me back to prom, just as it did when I saw it for the first time in '85. Best soundtrack that fits a movie ever and the most realistic ending ever along with being one almost every person has experienced. This movie reiterated the lesson I learned from my high school sweetheart. Most women (and men) will go to the person who's a challenge, not the person that puts them on a pedestal. Call it "nice guys finish last" if you want, but it's the truth.

This film is the only realistic teenage film every made. The actors are actually teenagers. Then life doesn't go right for the hero, just like real life for all of us. I think everyone can relate to the heart break which runs through this film. It is high school in so many ways.

The movie is clearly a 5 star film, cheesy in places, funny with teen innocence. However it's not clear to me why the script called for Karen to self-destruct at the ending by going back to the boy that abandons her in her greatest time of need and creates a duplicitous character when Gary professes his love for her adn she kisses him. That makes her either manipulative backstabber or completely stupid - either of which destroys the innocence of the film - it should've ended after the vacation.

When I watched the movie for the first time, when I was 11, I was shocked. But despite of the sad ending, I just thought it was perfect. Then, as I grew up, I could realize how much of this ending correspond to reality when it comes to female behavior. In fact, this movie is considered by me one of my very first lessons about women and how to deal with them. I like this ending even more nowadays.

Interesting points, Tetly007. There is an excellent 1972 film starring Pamela Sue Martin titled "To Find A Man" which covers some of the same elements that are in this film. But it's handled and played in a very different,, but also touching, way.
It's a hard film to find, it's not on DVD yet so I had to make a copy from my VHS tape of it - which looks like it was made from a faded film print,.. Amazon has it via video-on-demand, but not on DVD. Great little-known 70s film.

I remember when this movie came out. They left the lights off when the movie ended, all the girls were crying. I was like....15 or 16 years old. The songs in the movie bring back lots of memories of the 1980s.

I wouldn't put those films in the "teen" genre for a few reasons, IVSolar, including that they're both "biopics" based on tragic true stories - "happy endings" were not an option for them as it is in this film.
Also I think most folks have something diff in mind when they think of the term "teen movie". Something like "American Graffiti", "Porky's", this movie, and others down the years with the same feel.
Just my thinkin' anyhoo...

I really dunno, IVSolar - I never saw it! Actually I'm more a fan of 70s movies - ABC Movies Of The Week, some cheesy horror, odd B films,, little-known flix, things like that. Also some real gems from that era and more than a few great coming-of-age/ teen movies. What's great about the internet era is how many you'll find of those 70s flicks to either download or buy from somewhere like Ebay.

Yeah, I can see the elements especially in the first half of the film or so, DirzoRasec, where there's a lot of craziness and silly goings-on.
When I think of 80s teen flicks, I think in the vein of "Porky's", where that "goofiness" theme is a constant througout the movie. In this film, you don't have that - it twists & turns and instead you get a coming of age story; a tragic comedy with a gut-wrenching ending.

Yup - that's the descriptive term I was searching my grey matter for - but got nothing except "a tragic comedy".
Certainly this film was made for a teenage audience. But I think most anyone can appreciate the story, like the film I mentioned in a comment below, "To Find A Man". (Except that movie was more for mature-minded teens, it's not a "teens go wild-type" flick.)

Well...if you really stop to consider it, all Gary lost was a few possessions and some of his pride...but I seriously doubt it would "turn him off women" forever. He just met the wrong girl. On the other hand, Karen is probably going on to a life being with guys who treat her like dirt--she got (and will continue to get) the worst of it.
Personally, if it were me, I would have been getting it on with Victor. He may be a dork, but he's got hotness (great butt) and probably some loyalty.
