  • why you name it junk robot?

  • I have a question Junk dont mean drug adict ?

  • This is why i love youtube

  • ART HOMEWORK. MEET YOUR MAKER. MUAHAHAHAHA

  • What the f*** is this batery ??? I can;t find on web ?? It have fibers ? I can't understand ... Please tell my what is that baterry

  • @lucasiradu It's a 9volt battery...commonly found in RC cars' controllers? He never said fibers.

  • Nice

  • draw me crap

  • why not make a real robott that can do something important?

  • @Ratama Because you can't make any robots to do anything.

  • it drew circles! it is actuallly pretty cool!! good job scientist man! good job!

  • Oh DAMMEd forgot to charge the battery!

  • Oh, I forgot to add - angle the pens, and it will move in a straighter line, then you can build two and race them.

  • Vibrobot!

There are loads of cool bots, better than this, on Instructables[dot]com

  • nice robot man 5* :D

  • God damnit, you didn't say I needed googley eyes.

  • If this is a robot then so is my car when I put a brick on the gas pedal.

  • Wow, it can draw what my inner child could draw. Cool. Lol

  • showing his face closeup when hes doing the key parts doesnt help. show his hands.

    thumbs up this

  • Seem like Skynet has still a long way to go!

  • This robot could one day be used in rescue operations.

  • @coolman9999uk LOL LOL LOL LOL FACK MEN YOU ARE HILARIOUS LOL

  • Thanks for all your comments, guys.

Thanks to the defenders for flaming the haters.

Thanks to the critics for some particularly funny put-downs (I was crying with laughter by the time I'd finished reading them all).

Tune in for our next robot. For those that want to take part, you simply need to get hold of some spent nuclear fuel rods, a welding kit, and some old fireworks.

    Sean O'Neill, New Scientist

  • Junk is still junk.

  • Give the man a break, you haters, it's not THAT bad. For some, the word "robot" raised expectations too high, but it's still a cheap, fast, and clever way to help people make the transition from merely *watching* videos about complex experiments to going out and actually *building* a simple experiment. If Doc Edgerton or Richard Feynman could've seen this video, I bet they'd give it a thumbs-up. Reading is good. Doing is better. It's not a great video, but it's certainly not a bad one.

  • This video belongs in a classroom for 8 year olds, not in newscientist..

  • wtf, i dont even...

  • is he trying to be kipkay ? plz, leave that to him !

  • It would be cool in the heat of summer. I didn't know you could connect a computer fan directly to a 9v battery though

  • Why so many downvotes? This isn't that bad.

  • @Zarhejo yea, it is =3

  • constructing a "spirograph" would've been more "crackpotty". then deriving trivial and inconsequential theorems (<- those that has absolutely no practical use) from it would be even better.

these people are those that can only see things in the very superficial layer and can't work with the abstract.

  • I could figure out exactly what you were going to do after the list of items.

A guy made this same kind of thing a long time ago only it didn't draw and it was made out of a toothbrush.

    It was also much cooler.

  • and this is for why the people want be a scientist xD

  • man, this guy must have been one bored mofo to come up with this.

  • macgiver vibrator!

  • so... um, in theory of course, i could leave the caps of the markers on and have a four pronged dildo? i love new science!

  • What kinda pointless crap is this? You say it draws... It just put a few pointless scribbles on a piece of paper. I could use less time and less money using my own hand to draw something worth anything.

  • @somegeezer1992 well then, I guess your stuck... oh wait, you dont have to make this.

    problem solved

  • @somegeezer1992 It's "process art", of course.

  • Pretty neat. Thanks for sharing the vid!

  • I was expecting to see a house robot that could pick up my junk. In stead I get to see a fan with 4 markers attached to it, spinning slowly around on a sheet of paper. How interesting...

  • @fuunguus

    jup me too :(

  • i can use this for other things, if you know what i mean

  • just because it has "legs" doesnt make it a robot!!!

  • @sgohara robots dont even have to have legs

  • @sgohara no where did it say it was a robot becuase of the legs, anything automated can be considered a robot

  • pfft! just attach a couple of markers to a vibrator and you're good to go.

  • it just WOBBLES!!!

  • Robot?!?

BTW, the sound is awful - the right channel's intermittant.

  • lmao I was ready to defend it but that was one hell of an anti climax. What a load of shit.

  • what shit is that..useless

  • completely useless so whats the point?

  • 118 viewers have found better robots in their lint traps

  • Excellent a junkbot creating more JUNK!!!!, Scientistvideo? Ooh crap.

  • You removed 4/7 blades from the fan, not 2/3. Maths ftw!

  • @robtallent lol

  • @robtallent 3 is not a factor of 7 so he choose 4 (i.e. 2*2) since 3*2 = 6 which is close to 7. It's a quick solution.

  • @kurniasan So is it fair to say that pi is equal to exactly 3 because its close to 3.14 and a quick solution?

  • @robtallent dude, he's not answering a test paper, or a quiz... :/

  • @kurniasan Thanks captain obvious!

  • Hey guys, I just made a Yoghurt robot. I took some yoghurt, poured it over a lawnmower and voila: yoghurt robot.

  • LOL you call that a robot? HAHAHA

  • Oh, come on, guys. This is childish fun. That's the best kind of fun.

  • LOOOOLLL!!!!!!

  • not nice..

  • poor, its like fucking art attack but for big boys. New scientist, your classier than this.

  • Wow! It drew Michael J Fox's autograph!

  • cant u use old nokia with vibration ?

  • HAHAHAHAHA oh wow

  • The picture looks crappy.

  • @trakkaton In the comments! It's a bird! It's a plane! NO!

    It's CAPTAIN OBVIOUS! ^_^

  • @Magnulus

Try to make sense next time.

  • That is cool

  • so much for science

  • <3 THE NEW YOUTUBE MEDIA

  • Good for 5-6 year olds!

  • Bieber and Gaga, for Gods sake! :O

  • i want to name it scribblebot maybe taking out more fan blades maybe leaving out one or two might make it move more..just an idea!

  • guess i would rather hook the fan up to some jumper cables and a car battery...good times...

  • @krammit25 Car battery is 12 volts. Computer fans run on the 12V rail in a computer.

    No difference.

  • @pringlex PP3 battery is 9 volts. This computer fan isn't in a computer, is it?

  • 2010 new scientist

  • Oh the robot is so realistic! with a nice deep voice, synthetic Caucasian colored skin and everything! The range of motion of his arms, wrist and joints was superb!. I especially like this part: 0:31-0:32 because the robot's movements are so mechanical fast and precise! Wow robots are beginning to teach us how to make simple crafts, soon they will take over youtube and make videos for us!

  • This is not a science, its called dummies in action!

  • So I guess this guy would classify a vibrating dildo as a robot too

  • the eyes, the eyes!

  • Squigglebot!

  • adding a motor to something does not make it a robot.

adding a microcontroller to something makes it a robot :P

  • wtf? just lol

  • elastic band some pens to your cell phone, set it to vibrate then call it. same robot

  • @lejink Lets see your idea in action. Make a vid!!

  • why is it that MEGA nerds have zero imagination?

  • he looks like hes trying too hard to appeal to the science community

  • I like it. Simple project for a kid to get started.

  • i could take 4 markers and hold them all in my hand at once and shake my hand and draw the same picture as this thing. Not very ...Creative... sorry

  • OW MY EYE!

  • He took a bunch of usefull objects and turned them into a useless piece of shit.

  • @Darkfire889 lol so true

  • @Darkfire889 gaahahahahaha best thing i read during the day :DDD

  • @Darkfire889 It takes skill.

  • @Darkfire889

    nice.

  • @Darkfire889 Hahahahhahaha, so true!

  • @Darkfire889 the title DOES have junk in it... lol

  • @Darkfire889 No, I think the stuff he used could have been useful at the beginning.

  • This is fucking stupid...

  • Well, the IDEA of making robots out of junk is nice.. but that is not a robot. It's a computer fan that jiggles.

  • Or just put a blindfold on and scribble.

  • awesome!

  • What's with all the fucking morons criticizing every single newscientist video?

Nobody wants your shitty fucking opinion.

    GTFO.

  • Robot- any machine or mechanical device that operates automatically with humanlike skill.

Drawing is a human skill, is it? Tho, this is not really drawing, but still..

  • oh more how to vids please

  • well that sucks.

  • Da fuck is this shit?

  • What a piece of junk.

  • define the word "robot" ... please

  • Honestly, how is this so amazing? A vibrating marker isn't exactly inderesting.

  • Okay the idea of this was good, But really? Maybe try something way better than making a vibrating pen holder.

  • How is a computer fan an everyday object?

  • @AquuL You used at least 3 in the PC or laptop you just wrote this comment on. Pretty much everything around you is powered or regulated by a computer using such a fan in a way.

I'd say it's an everyday object.

  • @justl00king69 I realise that, but you don't handle one everyday.

  • @AquuL I guess that depends on your hobbies and your occupation. Just depends on how you look at it.

  • @AquuL I've never laid my hands (or eyes!) on the gearbox in my car, but use it every day. How would you define an everyday object?

  • @AquuL There are billions of computer fans in the world. I can count 5 of them within 10 feet of where I'm sitting.

You posted your comment using a computer, right?

They're almost as common as hard drives.

  • New Scientist, creating a world of MacGyvers

  • What was that? you just destroyed that fan, you could have probably build something much better with that

  • well that was shit

  • cheap trick :|

  • I don't think it's drawing as much as it's scribbling.

  • He's not a fan of tape.

  • Sounds like a vibrator..... Doesn't look very useful otherwise.

  • I thought he would hotglue small markers onto a fan blade and spin circles.

  • uh.... STUPID

  • why did i watch this, thats right im subscribed to NEW SCIENCE! I was expecting a science video not something i could see on householdhackers. this = lame.

  • @GorbixElite01 Unsubscribe then if you're going to be a little bitch about it

  • @SwizzYtp Awww did i hurt your little feelings butt hurt fan boy cunt.go fuck your self to the this video of your gay assed little "robot".this is the stupidest shit i had seen i quite a wile and you defending it speaks volumes about how functionally retarded your inbreed ass has to be. And why the fuck do you care anyhow, I suggest getting your ugly pimply ass laid, you might find that life has more to offer then complaining about complaints on the internet. You are a fucking tool.

  • I though it was cool

  • Since we have an old computer we're gonna recycle and I'm a computer expert, I'll take its cooling fan and I'll make that robot.

  • Doesn't really count as a robot, you'd get the same effect taping a few markers to a dildo. Not impressed NS

  • This is a disgrace to the word "robot". Robots typically do something that is intelligent, this one draws like a 2 year old child. 2 year old children do a lot of things, but very few of them intelligent.

  • Have you guys seen modern art lately? Its utter shit, but sells for millions

  • not a very smart robot :/

  • sorry but this was retarded

  • it liooks cute but not really usefull

  • i like this series... not this certain project, but you guys should do more of these!

  • Haha, possibly the most useless thing in this galaxy.

  • wow thanx new scientist! u've revolutionized how lines can be drawn on paper with pens

  • wow nice

  • I like it...brilliant little device.(;o)))

  • That thing is like totally amazing.

  • Thank you for showing me how to do this?

  • i thought the guys(and girls) are new scientist were actually smart... :s

  • @makmegs That is best comment for this video..

  • ...

  • OMG You're hurting it !! Look how it shivers !!

  • This would make an excellent school project.

  • a bit random isn't it?

  • i will pay one million dollars for that artwork

  • its for americans :D retard fan

  • Junk video of a junk robot :|

  • seems like there should be some logic to a robot...

  • @Poohmaniac Seems logical to me.

  • this seems to be the poorest new scientist video

  • Congratulations, you have made a vibrator.

  • @navigatorhat no no no a _drawing_ vibrator :P

  • this is shit

  • Why border making one? It's called Junk robot! You make it call a piece of junk! Who the hell on earth would name something that crap?!

And it really do nothing but drawing random circles!

  • mmm useless but funny

  • Comment removed

  • What is this I don't even.

  • 0:59 "The battery is now connected"

    A wireless battery? :O

  • lots of laughter =)
