Another GREAT area for farming shards is the slugs in Blighttown swamp. Ignore poison, use rusted iron ring, and you can get both large shards and green shards, which you'll need later.
Oh my god, it is HARD sometimes to watch you get SO CLOSE to succeeding over and over!
1. Whoever told you not to lock on for backstabbing should never be trusted again! You can lock on and easily get backstabs. It is just a matter of circling to the right position. Nice job with the no-lock backstabs though. I've never even attempted those; dangerous!
2. Rusted Iron Ring: "improves balance on poor footing" = "walk easily through deep water and muck"
