I can recommend "Nico, Songs They Never Play on the Radio" by James Young. He played in her band around this time. It's interesting. She comes across as a monster. An interesting monster though.
I next saw here again in, I think, early 1988 at a pub in Hoxton (this was before Hoxton became Hoxton). I believe she was recording at a studio down the road. Given her breathtaking beauty in earlier years, she looked exactly what she was : a ravaged lifelong junkie. Green teeth don't suit anyone.
I first saw her when she showed the film "La cicatrice intérieure" and played the songs from "Desertshore" at a college in Brighton - in 1972 I think. "Preposterously pretentious" is a good description. The only light was from two candles - in the shape of Coke bottles - on the harmonium. Memorable.
Everyone going on about how bad she looked. Nico never ate well, seldom washed and only quit the gear a year before she died. But she still looks better here than most do in her situation. Kids today have no idea how someone that age should look. The faces you see on the screen are shopped, botoxed, facelifted to fuck and and back behind the ears. Hair xtensions, lip filler etc.

I happened to be looking for a scene from The Silence of the Lambs last night and the entire movie was available {in chunks of course.} There was also the entire Hannibal movie and American Psycho. Someone put it up again. Who cares if they take it down? Nico liked heroin. The worst problem with heroin is constipation. I'm serious. Terrible.
Hey guys, if you have a spare minute could you check out some of my covers on my channel and give some feedback. It sucks to have to advertise like this but it seems like the only way to get exposure. Thanks if you do check it out...
@juggalohunter100 Listen to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' cover. It's pretty fantastic. Better than Japan's, I think. Also, this is not a good live recording. Listen to the album version.
Baked or not, I think her biggest problems here are an indifferent audience who won't shut up, and a sound engineer messing with her vocals. I've seen it many times working in a live music club- a singer prepared to give it their all, only to end up wondering why they should bother.
@mramone i think this was long before everyone realized how seminal velvet would be..........has they had any idea, they would have all shut the fuck up and listened.
In the 80s Nico's 15 years of drug use, especially heroin, finally caught up to her and she got totally ruined from then on. I just wonder how her son was treated during these times because she was unfit to ever raise a child.
@metsel12345 What's a topfilled spike? I'm assuming it's something used to inject drugs.
And I guess I meant her near-neglect even before the 80s, like when her son was very young and accidentally ate amphetamine pills, thinking they were candies, and how Nico forced him through her entire bohemian lifestyle, exposing him to a lifestyle he never should have seen. She never raised him well, in my opinion-too focused on fame/The Factory and less on the welfare of her child.
@sydjimiizzy she is not a true artist, all she ever did was cover other artist's material. She didn't write any of the songs from her tenure with The Velvets, Lou Reed wrote all her songs. And as for her first solo album...jimm Morrison helped her write it while they were fucking at The Castle in Hollywood.
does she say 'quiet' to the audience at the end?? .. and 'it's hot in here'??? ahaha ... she sure looked overheated :/.... she has such compelling eyes O.O.... beautiful lady !
Nico played at Heaven on the first occasion it opened its doors to straights. I think her backing band were Bedlam who are possibly playing in the video. It was an all nighter starting at 11pm and finishing at 5am. Had the chance to meet her and though very ill at the time she was still strikingly beautiful. Some people didn't like her political views but I guess that depends where you are coming from.
@rossbicher It's probably The Faction supporting Nico.
Check out James Young's 'Songs They Never Play on the Radio' - he's the keyboardist and it documents what it was like with Nico on tour throughout the 80's. Great book.
Yes and always the comments by non drug addicts about the behavior of drug addicts. What is it about these people that fascinate you so?
Heroin is sexy. No contest. Theres nothing here but a fat middle aged woman singing an above average song but for some reason half a million people want to see it. Thanks for posting I quess I'm one of them.
@popancake There's nothing sexy about the heroin lifestyle and look what it did to Nico, Lou Reed, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Marianne Faithful etc
Drugs are for people who have different drives like others...in many ways they are revolutionaries, because all what "normal" people care for is sucks.
@lovemenot66 You are very, very naive. True revolutionaries dare to be themselves despite what society and everyone else around them tells them how to be. And they certainly don't need an escapist crutch like drugs to do it.
@Scriabin28 sorry i thought i answered to someone else...in fact i agree with your interpretation...but who could expect something different from someone who has scriabin as a screen name. Bravo!
Opiates are fine for occasional use if you can find safe ways to ingest them (IV's killed so many - too risky) & resist daily use. Smoking's a pretty safe way to enjoy heroin, smoking a little at a time. If you smoke too much, you'll get get acutely nauseous & stop long before you could get a lethal dose.
But I agree opiates addiction sucks. It takes most of the enjoyment away & f*cks your head up in subtle ways. Only after getting clean do you realize how f*cking boring life was as an addict!
@beamerZ You believe that the artists you mention are so mono-dimensional that they can't accommodate incredible talent and weakness into the one body?! Grow up!
@Scriabin28 Drugs are used for thousands of years to open doors you don't even know exist. All great artists, even painters like Rembrandt would never make the art they made without drugs. What defines ''drugs'' differs from time to time. There was a time coffee was considered an illegal drug. Alcohol is one of the most dangerous hard-drugs; but i bet -strong of mind you are- you never use mind-altering substances.
@beamerZ -- That collection of obvious, worn-out facts about drugs and vaguely insane assumptions about me actually has nothing to do with my original statement, which pointed out the lack of logic (and maturity) in your original comment. Grow up!
@Scriabin28 ''Worn-out facts'' : Worn out but true. You keep mention 'maturity' and 'growing up' repeatedly ; you seem to have a problem with that subject, like you do with all opinions which differs from yours.
@beamerZ@beamerZ -- OK, are you happier with a lack of worldly insight and perception? The only meaningful mind alteration comes from within and is generally an act of enormous personal power. Drugs might sometimes help that process to show us that there are other levels of perception, but they're only a means to an end. (And that's not why they're used in 99.9% of cases anyway.) If you think that the effects of drugs are meaningful in themselves, you're simply lying to yourself.
@beamerZ he is right not using drugs is usually a proof of maturity and independence. Drug use is a weakness....only in the very few case of creative and conscious experimentation we could say that it is an exploration... but even the creator of LSD said that there is nothing higher than pure union with the magic of nature and that LSD could only try to mimic that. Meditation is far more powerful than any drug and very beneficial... low people use drugs...aristocrats do not need them!!!
@KanzerSkud -Define ''Drugs''; nicotin, coffee; they're all a kind of drug.
- About 'low people' (must be millions of them around) : what about native american Indians, they used drugs to connect with a/their spirit; would you call them low or weak?
You sound if you feel superior to other people, a rather nasty character flaw.
My drug is speeding on the autobahn by the way,the chemical used is gasoline; because i don't take heroin myself doesn't make me feel superior to the people who do.
@beamerZ If anything your "drug" is far worse than any of the chemicals people are persecuted for possessing or taking. When you speed on the roads, you put other people's lives at risk. Someone shooting heroin is only risking themselves. Sure others will be upset if they die from an OD, but upset and is a privilege of the living!
@beamerZ It is true (and alcohol is like heroin to my own opinion). Psychedelic drugs open doors.... But i think that if you open doors yourself by your own concentration (like the eastern mystics) you will go further and better than with chemical substance. What comes from your inside is better that a foreign substance you cannot really control
@KanzerSkud I agree I read Doors of Perception, I love it dearly, but what Aldous was missing was that we should be capable of this on our own. I wrote an essay about it in high school a couple years ago. I am anti drug but I have to admit I wanted to see what all the hype was about, and it's nothing exciting. I hated every minute of it, it was the most dumb experience of my life. I have more fun and life is so much more enhanced and wonderful when I'm sober. Drugs seem to dilute life.
@KanzerSkud alcohol is the most abused drug in the world and the hardest to kick, when detoxing alcohol can kill you, heroin detox only makes you feel like you want to die.
@rainspirit100 But Heroin is far more easy to overdose on. Cause atleast when you buy alcohol from a store you know what you are getting. When Janis Joplin died of a Heroin overdose so did several of her dealers other customers from that same lot that Janis got. I can't comment on which is worse from a Heroin withdrawal to an alcohol withdrawal. I have never done heroin. I was an alcoholic for a while but not a chronic alcoholic where I had to go through withdrawals.
@Scriabin28 I did not say that drug addicts artist are bad...but the fact they got addicted to a drug like heroin show A weakness of mind...of course it does not diminish their other talents. At the end, heroin will prevent them to create anything.
It is true that some artists used drugs for experimentation , in this case it is a different situation.
@KanzerSkud -- Wow, I didn't say that you said that drug addicted artists are bad. Neither did I. What annoys me is the kind of naivety that equates drug use with being revolutionary (lovemenot66's post) and the equally naive idea that Lou Reed etc. couldn't be/have been mentally weak because they are/were so talented (beamerZ). I absolutely agree that the doors you can open through your own concentration help you go further and better.
@Scriabin28 I agree with you very much, but like to have the benefit of doubt, also don't belive in freedom of choice, the strenght of the mind, also I don't care artist too much, but like art, and don't care if it's "weakens my mind' etc. Personaly I like to alter my mind with all kind of substances, because I get bored easily by myself.

Drugs might sometimes help that process to show us that there are other levels of perception, but they're only a means to an end. (And that's not why they're used in 99.9% of cases anyway.) If you think that the effects of drugs are meaningful in themselves, you're simply lying to yourself.

@beamerZ -- And I'll take my comment back about them being facts. They're not! "All great artists..." you say! Pull the other one! :-)

KanzerSkud 1 year ago
@KanzerSkud -Define ''Drugs''; nicotin, coffee; they're all a kind of drug.
- About 'low people' (must be millions of them around) : what about native american Indians, they used drugs to connect with a/their spirit; would you call them low or weak?
You sound if you feel superior to other people, a rather nasty character flaw.
My drug is speeding on the autobahn by the way,the chemical used is gasoline; because i don't take heroin myself doesn't make me feel superior to the people who do.
beamerZ 1 year ago
@beamerZ If anything your "drug" is far worse than any of the chemicals people are persecuted for possessing or taking. When you speed on the roads, you put other people's lives at risk. Someone shooting heroin is only risking themselves. Sure others will be upset if they die from an OD, but upset and is a privilege of the living!

@Straylight100 Speeding on the German AUTOBAHN like i said is not dangerous (nor illegal) at all thank you.

KanzerSkud 1 year ago 55
@KanzerSkud I completely agree, and I think foreign substances will ultimately destroy your creativeness.

@KanzerSkud I agree...There are a lot of ways to open doors,we don't need drugs...

@KanzerSkud heroin is NOT a psychedelic drug .
briansavary3 9 months ago
@KanzerSkud alcohol is the most abused drug in the world and the hardest to kick, when detoxing alcohol can kill you, heroin detox only makes you feel like you want to die.
rainspirit100 7 months ago

KanzerSkud 1 year ago
@KanzerSkud -- Wow, I didn't say that you said that drug addicted artists are bad. Neither did I. What annoys me is the kind of naivety that equates drug use with being revolutionary (lovemenot66's post) and the equally naive idea that Lou Reed etc. couldn't be/have been mentally weak because they are/were so talented (beamerZ). I absolutely agree that the doors you can open through your own concentration help you go further and better.
Scriabin28 1 year ago
@Scriabin28 I agree with you very much, but like to have the benefit of doubt, also don't belive in freedom of choice, the strenght of the mind, also I don't care artist too much, but like art, and don't care if it's "weakens my mind' etc. Personaly I like to alter my mind with all kind of substances, because I get bored easily by myself.
lovemenot66 1 year ago
@beamerZ if you talk with one of them we is now sober, they will tell you that feel more creative without drugs...
Drugs are used by people who are not strong enough to get HIGH by themselves...
Baudelaire said; "A farmer smoking marijuana will only have farmers vision" . What makes you a talented artist is not the drug....

Like the music here, but Nico sounds so much better in the studio version. This music with the studio vocals would sound amazing.
