alright hatsoff456 u assume that an intelligent race is going to be barbaric like humans.
Alien life doesnt have to come from a planet that is earth-like because we are only now discovering that life is able to survive in conditions that would kill us within minutes.
@gruianul The principle of physics is universal. It's not like the law of electromagnetic won't work on alien stars -- It'll work exactly the same way as it does on planet earth. That's the basic of looking for radio signal. It's very reasonable.

Have there been very many sightings in the last 8 years? Probably not -- the ETs know what a mess we've been in with Bush as President. Hopefully -- if Obama lives up to expectations -- the ETs will see a more intelligent planet, (or at least the US part of it!), and make more visitations here, starting 1/09! (P.S. I have seen ONE UFO myself. It was in the sky for about 45 seconds..too quick for me to get my camera. But I DID see it!)
I hate to sound pessimistic but whose paying for this useless shit ? The probability that there exist other intelligent life in the universe is high enough that one can assert psychological certainty that there is plenty of fun life elsewhere(just none to play with), even the likelihood that there are many intelligent beings with FAR greater intellect than our own but odds are they don't live anywhere near close enough to us for it to matter so what's with all the unrealistic enthusiasm ?
Paul Allen is paying 25 million and bravo for him. The work of pioneers like those at SETI may be unrealistic but what in our past has been realistic?
I dont think finding out that we are not alone is useless shit. If we ever could establish a dialogue with aliens it could be very beneficial and could lead mankind to a amazing future!
I definitely agree that finding out that we are not alone is not useless shit but odds are that SETI will never confirm that we are not alone, my point was regarding the effectiveness of SETI. Odds are that we will go extinct with out an extraterrestrial civilization ever so much as discovering our world or becoming aware of our existence if we're relying on radio waves. Recently we've discovered that our radio waves decay before even reaching the nearest star
@MassZombicide Of course we can. It's just that the dialogue will not be like usual every day ones. It'll take generations to go just one round. But that's not a very big problem. It's the dialogue between two world, it doesn't even need to be within a man's lifetime.
I also think that you don't know of SETI@Home its regular PC/Linux/Mac/UNIX application users on earth that volunteer also and donate money, so It's essentially us as humans who want to help search, and yes SETI@Home comes from all these sources, if not, then it will sooner or later.
try brain waves instead of radio waves!!

They assume incorrectly that the aliens see, hear and communicate like people ... is an entirely wrong approach ...

and also assume that the aliens are friendly...

Besides, given the likely distance, even if we or an alien manage to detect a broadcast, it's not like we'll be carrying on dialogue
