Best version of this song was, in my humble opinion, by a little know group called The Bedrocks. Never seen it posted on here though. I still have it on my old reel to reel.
@03len89 I find it funny the description of this video does suggest their was a race to number 1 between the two versions. There wasn't of course. Marmalade (like countless others) just cashed in on the fact the beatles were so good they couldn't release all their songs as singles. That said, despite this being a #1 chart hit it is hardly the most famous version.
@FabFM This was offered "exclusively" to The Marmalade by Dick James, who managed the Beatles Northern Songs catalogue just prior to the release of the White Album - some exclusive! - about 6 other versions came out at the same time but Marmalade nailed #1 on most of the planet! Probably the worst move they ever made recording this, but thankfully, much better was to follow
@rodgilbert I disagree. Besides this arrangement was written by The Beatles. This is how McCartney originally wrote the song (and this is included on the beatles anthology 3) before John Lennon made some changes to the arrangement.
The Beatles were/are modern prophets, and there are hidden messages and meanings in many of their songs. To learn how to perceive these hidden meanings, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read through the section about The Beatles.

@HilaryMG Hi Hilary, You're welcome! Yes there is still a band touring as Marmalade, unfortunately none of the original members are in it, the last of the originals left last year. I've never seen the current band, but I saw the original band many times & they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen!
@ultras1uk , Thankyou and I found that out last night that none of the originals were left, that really is so very sad as unfortunitly I never got to see them, my loss eh? but I wonder if they have ever thought of getting back together even just one more time?, dont wish to sound morbid..but time is running out..eeeh did I say that? ;)
@HilaryMG Hi Hilary, well we live in hope! they're scattered far and wide these days. Dean lives in LA, still writes & performs locally (for fun) with friends like Joe Tansin (Ex Badfinger). Pat Fairley has a bar in California. Alan owns gentleman's clubs in the UK. Graham retired from Marmalade last year & Junior still lives in UK, I think he still does some writing, he wrote the theme tune for the "Thomas the Tank Engine" TV Series. Come and join the Facebook Group!

My music teacher makes us sing this in class it really gets annoying because we have been doing this grade 5 and i am in grade 8 now. He thinks it is helping us in life by singing songs :s
Why do people always have to make comparisons? The Beatles were incredible and so were the Marmalade. Either of them had more talent in their little fingers than most of the stuff out today.
Beatles ripped off the uncopyrighted reggae songs and called it their own. What a rip - off band if there ever there was one. That's not the only song they ripped off.
@jpsmart59 I wholeheartedly agree with you! The Jamaican version sounds so much better with the female vocals. It can be found on Trojan record label's Tighten Up Vol 1., Bond, Joyce. It is so lively it makes you want to get up and dance. Incidentally, you can currently get it at this site if you search for:
@jpsmart59 Not quite. Please read carefully. According to Wiki.:
The tag line "ob-la-di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra" was an expression that 'Nigerian' conga player Jimmy Scott-Emuakpor, an acquaintance of McCartney, used. Scott later tried to claim a writer's credit for the use of his catch phrase in the song; McCartney however, claimed that the phrase was "just an expression".
Scott argued it was not a general expression, but merely an expression that was exclusively used in the Scott-Emuakpor family. However, he agreed to drop the case when McCartney agreed to pay Scott's legal expenses for an unrelated issue.
@sonicstep As for the reggae version I believe you refer to sung by the lead singer Joyce Bond, the backing music has that trade mark Beatles sound to it, particularly evidenced by the use of the 'trombone' and cheeky jolly Cockney Chas and Dave like pub piano tune. That instrumental sound and tempo is very English, not at all reggae like. What sympathises with reggae is Joyce's Jamaican vocal singing accent, but that's all, nothing else.

Great song, well covered by the Marmarlade but obviously the Beatles version is the best. Just another great song that the Beatles give away. Marmalade went to No.1 with this.
Sorry to rock the boat, but I like this WAY better than the Beatles version - there I said it. I like the heavier beat and fuzz bass - has a bubblegum/"The Rapper" type feel to it. Plus it's less corny than the Fabs version - no cheesy screechy John & Yoko falsettos and Mac's dopey ersatz chuckling.
Sorry guys....just popped over to another page and listened to The Beatles version...The Beatles sang this song effortlessly....a happy song sung by four happy confident lads...who by then knew they were IT! And still are!! The Marmalade rendition aint bad.. and if anyone feels I have been unkind...then let me add...their song REFLECTIONS of my life.. was a huge and beautiful song...one of my favourites... tx for posting.
@Emerystreet Hi - totally agree - always preferred the Macca's original, which as you say, they sing "effortlessly" - HARDLY - apparently, from the biog it took them in excess of 100 takes and over 3 days to nail it, and nearly split the band, the others hated it so much!! The Marmalade flew back from a gig, recorded it in 2 hours and it was in the shops two days later, and it sounds like it - the worst move they ever made, screwed their kudos, despite releasing Reflections 1 year on
@SirPercyBlakeney Thanks for the prompt respond...not that I was expecting one! Be that as it may, I used to live in England no longer now. I live in Calcutta but deeply miss England and still in touch with the UK, songs of the 60s and ofcourse dear but dear old Radio 4! @zoidbergthetramp im pretty sure tha legally you can cover what ever you want but you only need permission from the original artist if you change anything in the song
Alan Whitehead: was the only english member of the band replacing ray duffy in 66/67 as the drummer but yes i agree one of our many greatest scottish bands thanks for posting
@GAZOFNAZ Their first hit was actually Lovin' Things (which the Grass Roots later covered). It reached number 6 on the British charts and is a pretty good song. Ob-La-Di was actually their third hit, although it wasn't until Reflections of My Life and Rainbow that the group charted in the U.S.
"Obladi Oblada" was offered to the Marms (amongst others) by Dick James, the Beatles music publisher, in the late autumn of '68, prior to release of the "White Album" - the" Marms" version topped the UK charts and most of Europe around Xmas '68.
Only a publisher doing his job!! - though bad bad move for the Marms, who despite the w/wide multi million selling self-penned "Reflections of my Life", almost exactly one year later, they will forever be remembered for this tripe.
it was popular at the time , and they did well out of it ,they wernt the first to cover a beatles tune , and wont be the last im sure , i see your point though
Ah, sorry. No, there is none. This "band", originally known as "Dean Ford and the Gaylords" (yes, it's true, check Wikipedia if you don't believe me), had very little control over their output. Obviously, they still have their fans, though I suspect the people thumbing down comments explaining that Ob-la-di Ob-la-da is a Beatles song (by McCartney, Lennon and Harrison sanely vetoed it as a single), are not real people, but trolls.
hey everybody! one of their singers is brought up where i live! my uncle beat him in a singing contest:P which is my uncles claim to fame! also my mum knew him! but i dont know what singer it is? also my mum and dad told me this group sang it when i thought it was the beatles
hey, no flipping out here, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I prefered this one, in fact, the beatles didn't really get played much, as this version was the most popular. But everyone to their own.
the beatles do a good version of this hahaahahahah..the other threes lads were put thru nearly 100 takes of this song...it was even slagged off by harrison in savoy truffle...pure mccartneyism so it means what it means to u...its atained its upbeat happy feel despite the reported boredom of 3/4 of the players who recorded it...damn..i like it!
I think you'll find that this was never a cover, this was released before the Beatles version, the marmalades record company insisted they record it, the group didn't even know that it was a Lennon & McCartney composition at first , they didn't want to record it, it wasn't their style, they had no control over it
this is better than the Beatles version....and I LOVE the Beatles!

Not true
"Obladi Oblada" was offered to the Marms (amongst others) by Dick James, the Beatles music publisher, in the late autumn of '68, prior to release of the "White Album" - the" Marms" version topped the UK charts and most of Europe around Xmas '68.
Only a publisher doing his job!! - though bad bad move for the Marms, who despite the w/wide multi million selling self-penned "Reflections of my Life", almost exactly one year later, they will forever be remembered for this tripe.

is it me or does it say beatles in the background?...
eddy725 2 years ago 4
no - I think this was the band appearing on German tv's "Beat Club" which was a very popular show, sim to Britains "Top of the Pops"
agneshenderson 2 years ago
oh lol that makes sense...
eddy725 2 years ago
better than the beatles original, this one scored #1 at the UK charts for 3 weeks.
I wonder how they let this take make it into a clip, Dean Ford clearly loses his words at 0:20, while on close-up!

Ah, sorry. No, there is none. This "band", originally known as "Dean Ford and the Gaylords" (yes, it's true, check Wikipedia if you don't believe me), had very little control over their output. Obviously, they still have their fans, though I suspect the people thumbing down comments explaining that Ob-la-di Ob-la-da is a Beatles song (by McCartney, Lennon and Harrison sanely vetoed it as a single), are not real people, but trolls.

forthbridg 2 years ago
you were right, this was out by 3 bands at the same time, marmalade, the bedrocks and you you remembered the beatles, but this was the most popular
redredreds100 2 years ago
the beatles was the best and most memorable in my personal opinion if you don't agree it's okay but don't flip out at me like some others have
hugesbspfreak 2 years ago 2
hey, no flipping out here, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I prefered this one, in fact, the beatles didn't really get played much, as this version was the most popular. But everyone to their own.

the beatles do a good version of this hahaahahahah..the other threes lads were put thru nearly 100 takes of this song...it was even slagged off by harrison in savoy truffle...pure mccartneyism so it means what it means to u...its atained its upbeat happy feel despite the reported boredom of 3/4 of the players who recorded it...damn..i like it!

one of the Beatles worst ever and this cover is worse
mugwamp4 2 years ago
I think you'll find that this was never a cover, this was released before the Beatles version, the marmalades record company insisted they record it, the group didn't even know that it was a Lennon & McCartney composition at first , they didn't want to record it, it wasn't their style, they had no control over it

people are afraid to say something bad about the beatles, but even them & the marmalade have their own faults

Very Very nice version.
But a little out of original.
COMITATUS Obladi Oblada is the closest, and LIVE.
I discovered Comitatus in a trip to Rio de Janeiro.
The show was a big party, amazing.
See it in the channel ANGKORY

2,000,000+ sales worldwide - that's what!
AND, fully endorsed by MACCA at the time.
BUT - the WORST move Marmalade ever made - "Reflections of My Life" followed 1 year later.
Call it a "platform"!! means to an end.
