@MrDertien Planetary landings were first featured in Frontier - Elite 2 (1993) and Frontier - First Encounters (1995), there's also the Evochron series which is essentially a modern-day Elite. You should have mentioned one of them, not Infinity as it's not even sure to be released.
Movies on Iwar 2 can be found on youtube. If you like what you see you can grab it real cheap at the goodoldgames website. Play through the campaign, and get ready for freeform mode after that. Check out the torn-stars website and the I-war2 website for further game mods and enhancements. Play the game you wont regret it.

Egosoft chose the modular path for shipbuilding which means that through modding some of I-wars features (that I miss in the great X3 space sims) will become possible. I basically assumed the moment I saw a grainy video that it WAS what he did before it could even show it was synced and cut the video. It sadens me to see only Egosoft with Deep Silver keep making this great and wonderful Space Sim. What happened to the good old days when Space Sims was in the top most type played games, and it could stand alongside RPG's RTS's and TTS's...now it's all...Shooters Shooters Shooters (well most of them :) )
@Freelancer2000 It's the down trend from the space race. Back in the 60's people were fascinated by the prospect of exploring space. For some reason once America got to the moon, no one cared as much anymore. From that point forward, interest has fallen. The space games that you saw so prominently, were just the tail end of a waning fascination that started earlier, and is dieing now.
@oEQjet I find that very hard to believe! The space race is still on, NASA have only just released another robot to Mars and they're currently working on the next heavy lift craft. They still use the ISS and will for a while and yet you say fascination is waning, mine sure isn't. :D
@pageygeeza They're close to running out of plutonium-238 for RTGs. Since Pu-238 is a synthetic isotope, once they run out say goodbye to deep space probes and advanced rovers.
Last I checked synthetic means you can....synthesize more. Unfortunately at least here in the U.S. I don't think we have any facilities to make any....doesn't mean we never will.

Finally, they incorporated the features that made I-war and I-war 2 such a fantastic simulations.
We're slowly getting there:
Left to do :
- Player ship has an enigneering station crew seat where systems can be turned off and on individually as they are needed. (I-war 2)
- Highways are cool, but LDS (Linear Displacement) would even be cooler (I-war 2)
- The Dockable Command Console principle of I-war 2.
- Different player ship configs (Assault-Stealth-Standard)
- Planet Landings (Infinity)
