I did a few deployments there in the early 80s, and was stationed there in '86-88. That pier wasn't even there then. First time I was there we lived in a tin/wood quansit hut in Splinterville. I was also there for the '83 earthquake (6.6 according to USGS, but they clocked it at the time to be 7.2). When I was stationed there they had just finished the barracks up by Cannon Point. Used to hang out at the ExPat club on the ocean side, even tho we weren't supposed to. Awesome place. I'd go back.
Were you ever on the YoYo (USS Yosemite)? Just thought there might be a connection there. I served on her and spent 1999 on DG. Great NAVY days indeed!! - Cool pics!!!
I wonder if Hector is still swimming in the lagoon? Maybe one of his descendants. The creator of the video got lucky to see the other side of the island. When I was there I wanted to see it but it was off limits. Only place I could go was Cannon point. Boy that place has changed. I really enjoyed listening to the history of the island.
"Diego Garcia had no permanent inhabitants when discovered by the Spanish explorer Diego García de Moguer in the 16th century and remained so until settled as a French colony in 1793."
Don't care if they had people living there afterward. U.S. Military needs outweighs any "native" concerns or inhabitants therein. It's always been that way and will always remain so. My country needs to be able to hit Asia in a timely manner and "correct those that require correction." End of Story.
@DarwinsFriend Sure you're not a war strategist. Don't you remember Pearl Harbor or do you think that Asia will go the long way to attack the United States. It's easier for them to hit the west coast, this would be too evident the other way. Diego Garcia is used to police the middle east just as Israel to keep an eye on the oil. Australia and Asia are far better places to keep an eye on Asia, they got more ground to operate on. You need some "correction", it seems.
@Barox213 ... Diego Garcia is used to police the middle east just as Israel to keep an eye on the oil...
Ah yes - some sniveling 27 year old cunt is going to tell this Korean War vet what's what. Find the night time satellite photo of the Korean peninsula and then tell me about war strategy. LMAO!
@DarwinsFriend Since 1945 they got bases on Japan territory, and it was used in vietnam war. Don't try to fool people with your false assumptions, even if they would try to go trough europe there would be more and more bases to get over. Diego Garcia is designed to set up operations(secret or official) against the middle east, like it or not. So there are two choices, you are clueless or you try to be deceptive. Just wear the hat that suits you the most.
@Barox213 ... Since 1945 they got bases on Japan territory, and it was used in vietnam war...
Been to Japan? Lived there? Seen the civilian protests against our bases in Okinawa-ken prefecture? No? Then STFU - you're speaking from your anus. Diego Garcia and Guam are the future of forward projection of power - in the air - in Asia. Six Boomer slots were just completed last year in Guam and those aren't for glass bottom boats for the tourists, Chumley.
@DarwinsFriend So now to make your point, US cares about civilian protests. As i know there are bases in S. Korea, Thailand, Phillipines and Australia, isn't that much near Asia? It's been 50 years since China needs to be corrected about invading Tibet but nothing has been done, the UN ignored their SOS. In the 80's Us fought with Russia in Afghanistan for oil and never stopped fighting for it. There is no Asia that needs to be corrected, they are surrounded.
@Barox213 ... As i know there are bases in S. Korea, Thailand, Phillipines ...
The Philippines? WTF? On September 13, 1991, the Philippine Senate rejected the ratification of the treaty to renew the USN's presence in the Philippines - you dumb fucktard! The only personnel there now are a few special forces and the the CIA. What a silly cunt you truly are! And Australia? Are you fucking kidding? They don't even allow our nuclear powered vessels in port unless there's an emergency! LMAO!
@Barox213 ... So now to make your point, US cares about civilian protests. ...
For those that matter. As a nation - the U.S. has to pick its political battles and that's never been any different. To think that thermo-nuclear weapons and their delivery systems are not already stationed at Diego Garcia and Guam is to be a sniveling, little, naive cunt. Oh wait - that's exactly what you are. Sorry. Taiwan will be the flash-point for clearing our debit with mainland China - soon enough. LMAO!
@DarwinsFriend There is only a country(US) that goes bankrupt because the power is hijacked by Oil and defense companies. You should notice that most of the military budget goes in the middle east to fight for oil ressources and that China is financing Us debt so this is stupid to think that they are a danger. This is just fear mongering that profits the defense contractors. As long as you fear Asia, they can bankrupt you and your credulity. Well my anus seems to be more informed than yours.
@navsquid32 Check out "Stealing a Nation" by John Pilger...that should shed some light on the history of Diego Garcia...there were inhabitants here from the decendents of the colonial slave trades way back when...Then check out my video that I just made here on the island a week ago :) i know ...a shameless plug :)
One of the best places to ever see, serve, party or visit in the US Navy. I am proud to have been one of the few to have been there in the early 80's.
The U.S built an illegal military base on that island. They killed the inhabitant's dogs and forced the people to leave the island to never return home. It is documented.
@StevenSaliba No. You are an idiot. And it's a British Indian Ocean Territory, so it's not a US navy base. There were never any "people" on the island. It's thousands of miles from any mainland, and had no livestock, so it didn't support life. You would have known this, had you done any research.
@navsquid32 No. You are an idiot and a fool. I did my research. The British forced the people off that island. They even killed the inhabitant's dogs. How would you feel if the government told you to leave your country and move to another land?
@navsquid32 You're right....they only had all them folks and livestock to support a plantation. I wish people would research properly instead of jumping to conclusions on "native" people kicked out.
whoever made this film has got killer taste in music ....the one and only pablo cruise and i feel they may just be "a child of the ocean freeride style".....any killer reef breaks there ???
Diego Garcia has certainly changed since my days with a beach-det back in '82. We lived in open-air hootches reminiscent of something out of McHale's Navy. There wasn't a whole lot to do besides use the gym (which remains to this day the most beautifully maintained work-out facility I have ever had the pleasure of using), tan, fish and sleep. There were exactly two women on an island and about 3000 men, but I loved it! Compared to the carrier, it was heaven!
Thanks a lot for this video.I really like it,i was there from 1982 -1987 an employee of American joint venture contractor Raymond-Brown & Root-Mowlem (RBRM) it's a very nice place....DIEGO GARCIA!!!i luv it...wish to be there again someday.....

sure there is a limit of what to do there. what's your point? i mentoined thailand cuz i thought you were implying that the philipino women were being prostitutes. which is def not the case in Dgar. everywhere else you go in asia, yeah the filipinos are prostitutes but not here. i only brought that up cuz i thought you implying that with the whole "i'm sure everyone is hmmm... taken".
This island was taken illegally from the Chagossian people in 1971, they were deported to Mauritius. This island shouldn't be a playground for American military personel.
@richardandgeoff It is what it is...I love it there. The military has taken care of it well. Even the army Veterinarian tends to the animals that are there sometimes. Very clean and well kept.
Didn't see any of them in the vid... don't guess they would make a good showing in their servant uniforms... Amazing how there's just enough of them left to tend the bases needs.
@pokeylilpuppy I don't know about vacation for them..They are there for 6 months, a year or more before they come home to visit their family. Some been there for over 20 years. It's a nice place for overseas workers, but can be lonely as well. I am sure that those women that works there are...hmmm...taken
nobody is forced to work there. i've been there. i also have pics and video of this place, i'll post it up. anyways, these people that work there voluntarily come there to work. they're filipino. it's not mandatory to be filipino but it just so happens that the majority of non-military personnel are filipinos. and they love it there. and what do you mean the women??? trust me, going to Dgar is not like going to thailand.
Gee...I've been there as well as a visitor for a week as a military person. Of course I know about the Filipino overseas worker. But don't you think it is difficult to work in some place for far away from your family? It's typicl of most Filipino overseas workers I mean... Women...Let's say there are ratio of available women compared to men in regardless of the ability of dating maybe?
@pokeylilpuppy Also, dont' get side tracked, I am not saying anything else except that there is a limit of what is availalable to do in Diego Garcia after a few months. And what does this have to do with Thailand? Huh?
@ascorbicacid1 : Yes, you are right! The U.S.A. and the UK have committed a crime against humanity with the secret expulsion of the Chagossians from Diego Garcia! If we want to paraphrase some document coming from the Foreign Office, they are still maintaining the fiction!
@ascorbicacid1 All the folks who lived there since the miltary took over have long since passed the age of productivityy. What do you suppose they would do for a living? Work on a Copra plantation like they used to? Times have passed the other usefulnesses of DG by. It is too small and remote to be anything else other than a very expensive resort for the very rich. Would that be better?
@HaiLsKuNkY ..No look at the history...sorry to say but they were natives and were made to go to Mauritius where all hated them and thus, became homeless. I was there in 1990 and clueless about this. A professor from Berkeley explained it well.
Too bad you didn't show how our US tax dollars are being spent by including the bases there. Yes, I know they're CLASSIFIED!!

@ascorbicacid1 the people that where evicted where part of a french plantation and not native.

@HaiLsKuNkY ..No look at the history...sorry to say but they were natives and were made to go to Mauritius where all hated them and thus, became homeless. I was there in 1990 and clueless about this. A professor from Berkeley explained it well.
