It was a flub. She was caught in the moment and when you're on a roll, you're on a roll. Happens to the best of us. Don't let this minor hiccup take away from this joyus moment.
MLK's dream of seeing economic justice lives on...and all of the quibbling and kvetching in the thread over a mis-speak is just folks who don't want to see the bigger picture. Focus on the message, people...focus on the message...
I know Bernice King very well; I worked for her and the King family for over a decade. I can tell you without question that BERNICE KNOWS LINCOLN SIGNED THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION & not the Declaration of Independence. If you notice, she was very caught up in the moment & just misspoke. It's really that simple. To make it anything other than is just searching for something to complain about. Bernice is a very intelligent, educated woman. To err is human, least we forget people! Tricia Harris
@tricia216 RIGHT ON!!I was born here in this small town in georgia...at the age of 4 I remember my prayer one night being THANK YOU GOD I AM AN AMERICAN AND I AM NOT A NIGGER"! Where would a four year old white boy learn such??IT WAS ALL AROUND ME!!THANK GOD FIRST AND FORMOST AND OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST THAT MLK WAS !ST A CHRISTIAN AND BECAUSE he LET THE LORTD USE him ,as well as MANY OTHERS ..IT CHANGED A FOUR YEAR OLD'S PRAYERS,MIND AND HEART!PEACE..LOVE..THANK YOU LORD~~
Lincoln, Charlemagne, Fred and Daphne from Scooby-Doo, George Jefferson. All of them great, great American founding fathers and signers of The Declamation ub Innapindance, ya'll.
Lincoln signed the Declaration of Independence????? MLK wept! Is basic American history still taught in the schools or can one graduate by just linking words together in any order?
As a black man , MLK has had his image on 2 postage stamps, a national holiday in his honor, and a street named after him in hundreds of towns all over America, that is honor enough for any one man
@dollarallen So I take it that you have gone on to make the same comment regarding Lincoln, George Washington and the Jefferson Memorial! They too also have their images on postage stamps (hell even our paper currency) national holidays and names of streets, federal and school buildings named after them. And unless your comment also applies to the others, then your comment just as many that are posted on here is a racist one!
@LooseEnds06 As I said at the end of my comment "that is honor enough for any one man". It does apply to everyone. No matter who the individual is at any point in history.
Her words were majestic! She got caught up in the moment and said "Declaration of Independence" instead of "Emancipation Proclamation"...big fucking deal! You pseudo-intellectuals might want to read your history b4 u speak. Lincoln's proclamation freed slaves only in the treasonous confederate states. He did NOTHING to free slaves in places like KY or MD. That required a Constitutional Amendment. This woman is her father's daughter and calling her ignorant reveals you 2 b an ignorant racist!
@Mayofour Nice one. I love how people can't be criticized without being labelled racist. That race card is getting old. This is fact, "Don't forget the King family so graciously charged $800,000 to have MLKs words on the monument...that is the true spirit of giving (sarcasm).", but I'm sure you'll brand me racist for doing a copy/paste of that little piece of news.
@Mayofour You said, "Her words were majestic!". WOW... Okay, since you're apparently seeing and hearing things that the vast majority of us "psedo-intellectuals" and "ignorant racists" aren't seeing or hearing, please explain why Bernice King found it relevant to make an ignorant and asinine comparison and correlation between Abraham Lincoln's statue being seated and MLK statue standing? CRICKETS. It must suck for people like you who go through life seeing everything through the prism of race.
Ummm... NEWS FLASH. Lincoln is remembered for freeing the slaves, not signing the Declaration of Independence, but in Bernice King's defense, ignorance is bliss, right? Seriously, what an embarrassment! ...and that was her closing statement that she really wanted to drive home!? To marginalize Lincoln? She really wanted to drive home the fact that that MLK is standing and Lincoln is seated. You have gotta be kidding me! Why in the world did anyone let this ignorant woman on stage.
Yeah, good thing she's not running for president or is a paid public speaker. It's all over the news. Relax. The 24 hour news cycle will continue to slam her just like they slam Palin and Bachmann, who would be in a position to control the nuclear codes. Terrifying.
Roland, you didn't even catch the Lincoln/Independence flub? What kind of reporter are you? Had it been Palin, Bachmann, et. al., you'd have entered the flub in the video title, tweeted it, and no doubt opened with it in whatever news report you'd likely be doing next, and for coming weeks ad nauseum. Pretty sad, Roland.
Lincoln did not sign the Declaration of Independence. She has got to know that. Had this been Palin or Bachmann, it would be all over the news. Be consistent liberal media.
Palin and Bachmann are Vice Presidential/Presidential candidates. Other than her dubious association with Eddie Long, Bernice is almost never in the news.
Representative idiot.............plain and simple.
