I thought this was supposed to be about blues, didn't sound like any bluesmen I know, sounded like a metal guy playing blues licks in a metal style, great chops, not much emotion.
A great example? That was an amazing example! Great point too. I think a lot of the phrasing and expressive technique behind guitar playing has been lost. It's been sacrificed for speed and trendy effects. Yeah, I use some effects and sure, speed isn't always a bad thing, but there has to be room to breathe. You need vibrato, slides and bends in between or a song is lifeless. If you don't, phrase to emphasize notes you might as well listen to a soulless robot play your guitar.
Get a Life !
Terrible teacher? Are you serious? I've learned more from this guy than any of the Vai's or Satriani's recently. Check out his chop builder vid; old and cheesy (and he had hair back then) but, what a mine of technique and knowledge gold to plunder at will. Frank is a great teacher and innovator of technique, trust. His passion for teaching and guitar is legendary. Check it. Maybe you won't be so quick to shout FAIL!
@flipadiddle fair point but there are also a lot of shred players that do like Vai . If shredding is just one technique which can added into a good composition or piece of music in the appropriate place then that is the way it should be used in my opinion . I'm pretty against some people saying shred is a bad thing all together , i'm not saying you're one of them but that's what a lot of people tend to do . In actual fact i think shredders should be respected for the fact that they practiced it
This is from the Guitar Techniques Book. I got this copy many years ago. He's a great teacher and do check out all his other stuff. Its all crazy cool.
My favorite teacher. He also must be a good father or may grandpa already? hehe

@Charl760 but the point is he understands the musical fundamentals in a way that presumably most dudes who just shred don't
