this sure does bring back alot of memories i remember growing up hearing this song every sunday morning now all the stuff that CBS and NFL on Fox have now just arent the same i think CBS should bring back this starting and not the crap they have now
Yeah, I have a game from week 1 of 1986 (49ers/Bucs) where this is the intro. I have a few other 1986 games where they'd switched to what is known as the "pots and pans" theme that they used until Super Bowl XXIV. So sometime during that season is when they made the change.
Missing the rest of it--you can hear the rest in "CBS NFL 1982 Intro" in the related videos box.
This intro is truly an absolute masterpiece...it's no wonder it lasted for over 5 full seasons (1981-1986) despite the fact that networks usually play musical chairs with their sports intro music (FOX's NFL theme, the NBA on NBC, and the NBC Wimbledon theme being the notable exceptions).
They need to bring this opening theme back!

Is there any way possible that the full version of this song can be added to YOUTUBE, or that it can be located online?

The announcer (Don Robertson) brought up billboards then by saying "CBS Sports' coverage of the National Football League is sponsored by..."
Now, it's shortened to "The NFL on CBS is sponsored by..." or something like that.

This was the best theme CBS sports used for Football games in the early 80's. I wish they would play it gain, oh how I miss the classics.

Always was my favorite NFL intro. They actually used it up to 1986. By '87 it was gone.....but not forgotten.

this theme is great, was played when sports was about team instead of money

Agreed.I'm finding it harder each season to cheer for these guys who play now.I'd rather watch old games than the ones live now.

Best intro ever for a network covering Sunday afternoon games. Today's CBS intro is one of the lamest ever.

Yes...lots of memories here. All we needed to hear at the end was the ....."You are looking LIVE from Texas Stadium in Irving, TX!"
