Frosted, cold air is more dense than warm air therefore with colder, more dense air you get better combustion which means more horsepower and better all around performance.
You could fab up your own custom intake with intake boots from different make & model cars from the wrecking yard. They're usually plastic and wont transfer heat like metal ones.
I just went down the street to O'reily or as it used to be (murrays). I spend maybe a good 110 bucks and made a custom cold air intake for my 1998 golf gti vr6. It works great. Trust me guys, you don't need to go out and buy something fance from K&N for 250 its the same : )
@djmsamson92 in california, yes,as they are made as universal,so no carb, but who would know unless a cop says pop the hood, but if you know your peopls,i know who sells the stickers
@TrackerYnZ Yaaa I had a K & N short ram intake. I added a Spectre Performance tube & filter now I have more hp, since I am getting better cold air flow:)
cold air intakes do not work. Seriously read reviews on google and on every single forum you will find that they do not work. Most gains are mental and the only real gains take other modification. The only use for this is for shiny metal under the hood so you can show off your 1.8L engine. do not buy this crap and save up the money for a real mod like a turbo or bigger engine.
@rocker4u123 cold air intakes do work...just not how everybody wants or expect them to..they definitely improve air flow and definitely get cooler air to your engine. your car wont pin you in your seat from just the intake but its not meant to do that anyway. BUT they are way to fucking expensive. anybody who wants one should find the cheapest cold air intake they can find and buy a high quality filter, cuz honestly theyre all the fucking same.
@sjjdiienno1 well they work but not to what the claims are. Some will say you will strap it on and get 12 hp and alot better mpg and throttle response. FALSE. If you want cold air intake design your own you know; by that i mean find some light aluminum plumbing and buy the filter and boom you have the same damn thing
honestly this overpriced shit is for show cars, not performance enthusiests. from a performance perspective they might be alright but i can buy something at autozone thatll get me the same benefit for .0001% the price. or i could build a showcar and install those gorgeous spectre intakes, and jizz my pants uncontrollably, until i need new pants and i no longer have enough money for new pants because i spent all my money on a spectre intake
or I could just do some measure the length and degree of the curves, draw a diagram and get a random company who can bend pipes to do a better job for half the price.
people... this system is designed to accomodate CUSTOM vehicles wherein the configuration of the engine compartment is something OTHER than stock. For stock CAI applications, just buy the off-the-shelf stuff at your local NAPA distributor. jeez.
why the hell would you want to make whats under the hood look like any thing, why cant people just leave shit the way it is not be 12 yrs old about everything, people play too much need for speed
i got the same intake that afe sales for $40 ,,,,this is a 80% cheaper system that works the same way,,,,good brand ,,if we didnt have spectra you would be stuck buying over priced systems from k&n,afe and aem,,,,just buy the parts and build it,,,,,
I had used one of their cone air filters and it ruined my MAF. Beware of these, they may be over oiled. Better to go with K&N, never had issues with their filters.
fuck shipping it back just find someone locally that can weld aluminum, trust me, MUCH easier. Or just by the premade ones with dual flex lines and two air boxes with the cone filters built in, so much better.
@lHustonProductionsl you arent talking about intakes here, your talking about intake manifolds. a cold air intake might make like 2-7 hp, a short ram makes like negative 5. im basing my info on dynos on cars at standard operating temps.
cold air intake my ass, the turbe, no matter which, chrome plastic pvc steel, aluminum..... they get hotter that shit, to be a true CAI the intake would have to be straight up through the hood, ann not run ANYWHERE INSIDE the engine bay, that place get hotter than HELL, and even the hood gets bloody hot on a suny day, intakes are a waste of time and money, they do sound kool tho :p
@NASTYTHEBOY possibly the stupidest comment i have ever heard... if you suck in air from outside of the engine bay, it will be much cooler.. even if it does travel through the engine bay, it doesn't have enough time to heat up.. keeping it cooler.. i guarantee that if you were to run one of these, then turn the car off and feel the intake, it would be a lot cooler than anything else in the engine bay...
@kkage2 principal of heat transfer :p COLD AIR that rushes through a radiator comes out hot on the other side, the air drops in speed as it passes though the curves of the cold air intake :] what you say only applies to a straight tube. even the intake manifold is hotter than fuck on a hot day, and dont tell me that shit aint cuvry, and maybe its a bit cooler, but its still CRAZY HOT!
This guys got a good idea going here, dont rip him, you may gain hp if you have a custom setup made, but if you want real hp using high quality abs plastic, a heat shield and a performance filter, go with a K&N, i got one on my car and its the best!!! there expensive but you get what you pay for, tust me
@tonythesom Agreed, a K&N is NOT a filter, it doesn't filter air to the standard required by engines and K&N do not even say it is a filter! Read about filtration. A K&N has a tiny surface area, so to achieve the same airflow as a paper filter with 10 times the surface area, it needs to have holes 10 times the size or more. That's why K&Ns damage turbos and engines, they allow huge bits of mucj and dirt through. Always avoid K&N they give NO power gain or BHP in any engine, but do block faster
Why buy the plastic vs. the chrome? Is there an advantage to the plastic? I would think the chrome offers better airflow since the walls are smoother... But I am also wondering about temperature of the walls of the piping. They would reach the same temperature but maybe the plastic doesn't transfer the heat to the in coming air as quickly, and thereby having an advantage. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks
@claymoore172 You misunderstand gasflow...smooth walls will make no difference to engine power! Learn about properties of different materials and the different types of heat transfer under the bonnet and how different materials can be used. This intake system will make NO difference to power, it's what's known as a useless boy racer mod. Done by people who talk in technical terms but don't know much about engines or they wouldn't do it!
my understanding is that these dont add power, but allow you to maximize power from future upgrades. Eventually your gonna need higher flow fuel injectors, so you should also increase the amount of air coming in correct? nobody claims that a higher flow fuel injector alone is gonna increase your power, so why should this alone... correct me if im wrong on this theroy
So without this shit, if you had the right tools you could make your own intake and it wouldnt screw anything up with ur motor, like on a snowmobile. As long as you have an air filter right?
the car needs oxigen to burn gas right? so ... larger intake = more efficient car? but wait... there is a looot of air coming in so i believe some gas will scape before combustion :S ?
yea they have these in auto zone and oreillys but the ones in the store seem like they are plastic..pointless when ur engine heat will heat the hell out of that plastic..causing nothing but warm air..lol
@RippedLives if youre smart and know how to use some damn tools youll make one custom yourself, not just buy one at a store and shove it into your car and think your all cool cause you have a cold air intake
I don't get why it's made of aluminum. Seems like that would heat the air more thank a plastic kit, making PVC cheaper and higher performance. I think they need to figure out a way to compete with the cheap pvc alternative.
