If the Himalayas formed over millions of years, and the top is eroded down significantly over time, why are the sedimentary layers still there? And why do people find marine life bottom-dwelling fossils in the mountains, if erosion has taken place over millions of years? The Flood really happened. Face it.
@joroma77 Bullshit happened, not the flood. The Himalayas were originally something called the Tethys ocean. It got pushed up when the Indian and Asian plates collided. And erosion doesn't affect fold mountains much when they're still growing. The Himalayas are pretty young and erosion won't be wearing them down till a few more million years. And as for your precious fossils, what do you expect to find in fossils? Martians?
Now we see Dawkins' true agenda: To exchange Christianity in Christian nations with the religions of the world. See, you stupid atheists, what he has done with your naive brains? We're too piecmeal, we're too beaten down by rich, arrogant, self-important theistic twats who feel that the choice a protestant child makes to throw a stone at a christian child is a right endowed to the parent (If a parent claims the right to teach this rubbish to children, then they should also bear the blame for the ramification).

@iLaughOut Insane that a Labour government aided and abetted the creation of these muslim schools for religious propaganda and NON-education in the sciences! In proper science classes pupils learn that scientific truth derives from facts and evidence. Muslim 'schools' that don't teach science properly should be closed.

How lucky the kids are who were addressed by Dawkins and his Genius at the end of the documentary, and how lucky are those kids who think that "Salt water and fresh water dont mix" in part 2/4 and 3/4 ..
Hope all people who see this, educate their kids about Reason and Evidence for everything in Science!
The thing about children assuming everything is made for a purpose might be because everything they use and everything they are surrounded by is made for a purpose?
This was well done however i do not think Dawkins has a leg to stand on when it comes to telling parents they cannot choose their child's school or faith, im an agnostic however there is no way your going to get the government to pass any laws stoping indocrination that would cause choas, but they need to stop funding faith schools, I live in the US and they dont give faith schools a cent....
8:12 OH MY GOD THAT LITTLE BOY WAVING WAS SO CUTEEEEE!! <3
Ahem, anyway, Richard Dawkins, you are brilliant, and I appreciate you making these programs and writing your books. You may have an agenda, but it's one that I mostly agree with. Thank you so much.
The least scene was heartwarming, but based on how much I saw the kids fidgeting, I wonder how much they understood of what he said. Do they know what the word evidence means? Don't get me wrong, Dawkins's heart is in the right place, I just think that that assembly might have been a little more appropriate for middle and high school students. On the other hand, would that be too late?
as a deeply religious orthodox christian, i totally agree with everything dawkins has to say here. children should not be segregated from each other and the state shouldn't have to contribute to religious segregation. this is all ridiculous.
Absolutely fabulous program. Richards reminds me of my grandmother, who inspired me and continues to do so, to think amd not blindly believe. Where are the people like these today, we seem to be in the minority. Why are the west and the arab nations all reversing into their own dark age?
Not all faith schools are equally pernicious; as far as I know C of E or Catholic schools don't teach pupils that the Bible is a science manual which should be believed over and above modern science. That's what so shocked me with the muslim girls school. The 'science' teacher, who knew nothing about biology, had clearly told the girls that the koran was to be preferred over modern scientific FACT. And this school receives public funds!
I want there to be multiple clones of Richard Dawkins to inspire children everywhere with the wonders of REAL knowledge NOT the half-baked claptrap promoted by, for example, the muslim 'school' which was particularly pernicious. A crying scandal that such a place of miseducation should receive public funds and shame on the last government for encouraging such schools to exist.
The part where they are asking questions and Dawkins gives simplified answers sent chills down my spine. Especially when the girl asked about the dinosaurs and he said "we don't really know, you have to look at the evidence." Makes me kind of melancholic about society imposing superstitious, irrational beliefs on children - tooth fairy, Santa Claus, Easter bunny and god.
@koochkooch What do you mean by placing the Easter bunny under irrational beliefs next to clearly irrational things like Santa or god? Are you saying...no, it can't be true, my whole life was built upon the belief the Easter bunny exists so what you're saying must be wrong. You will burn in hell.
@TudiRad LOL!!!!!!!! Yeah, a lot of people have built their lives upon the Easter bunny unfortunately. Guess some people just prefer to be aEaster Bunny-ists. :P
@koochkooch I think there is a difference between the fairytales compared with God, see the fairytales are told to inspire imagination and creativity. We don't tell them they aren't real because we know they will eventually come to the same conclussion themselves. This is part of a very valuable learning experience, which should be the same for God, they should make up their own minds and we should continually challenge their ideals so that they learn from these and decide their own opinion.
I'm not entirely for the way that child-psychologist asked the questions. The right answer she suggested demanded a logical approach, you'd for example have to go "lakes are still because water isn't added, which means that no force is exerted on the existing water" which is obviously too complicated for a child to handle, while it is easy to understand the "logic" behind any of the other explanations because they didn't see the logic behind the right ones.
@M3t4lManiac Uh... so? The point is to explain that children find solace and understanding in supernatural and impossible explanations to natural phenomenon, the sort of thing you'd expect from the same lot who believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy. It's to illustrate a certain evolutionary perspective from our ancestors who had little to stand by on their experience to explain certain aspects of life. We take that information and utilize it to understand why we still cling to the irrational.
@monosaturated I am perfectly aware of that, but the answers she is getting illustrates, to my observation, a trend that children will pick what makes most sense to then (in this case that they can make sense of). The furniture thing might be entirely unrelated. Non of the answers she posed were supernatural btw, they were just more intellectually convenient.
An argument people could use against Rich is that Rich had a religious upbringing but still became Richard Dawkins. Plenty of those kids are asking questions internally, but they're wise enough to know there are some questions they cannot ask their teachers without getting in trouble. My fam is Jewish. As a kid, I remember sitting in the pews at temple and thinking, We don't believe this stuff literally (do we), so what do we really believe? (As so my agnosticism was seeded.)
@cshubs This is true. Religious schools are not, in my experience, hospitable places for any kind of criticism. After all, if you express any shadow of doubt you are destined for hellfire. There is a social isolation factor, where the dissenter is judged by the 'religious' masses, who operate on a cult of fear.
I think people like Richard Dawkins are slowly...Very slowly, moving us toward a Utopia. The problem is that there is just so much that needs fixing, Richard could do his best and still it would only be a small dent toward a Utopia. I personally don't think that we'll get that far though. When truth arises people get pissed...We can't handle it and I think this will be one of the main reasons for our downfall be it de-evolution,the destruction of humankind or the destruction of Earth.
This video touched my heart and envoked a passion for teaching i never thought i would think of.Dawkins is a very special person to the 21st century, and to all people who enjoy asking questions.I believe he will be a role model for millions,if already isnt.
I love the final scene with all those kids asking Richard questions that they're clearly confounded by. It's like this is their one and only opportunity to find out the answers to all the historical and cosmological mysteries they've been privy to. It's pretty cool. Dawkins may not know everything (as any scientist and science-enthusiast, including myself, will be quick to point out about themselves), but he's a pretty good person to start with.
@monosaturated I loved it too, it's actually kind of bittersweet.
I had a similar experience with my roommate (who is fairly religious) about a week ago, when she asked me if there was any sort of 'instinct' that explained why she wasn't upset about breaking up with her boyfriend. I explained it as part of natural selection - that he wasn't a 'suitable mate' for her. She seemed amazed, and kept asking me more questions - we stayed up for hours talking, but I was happy to answer. :)
@bijoukaiba I'm ecstatic that you had a good experience explaining the science behind sexual interest and relationships to a layperson. The complete opposite is usual to myself and others that I know, but that's to be expected of those who stick with their beliefs and openly deride fact. However, your experience may be one of many, and hopefully will open new doors for those unfamiliar with the science behind life to seek out the truth rather than attempt to stick with the ignorance of the past.
@wildreams you can google "free US proxies". In those websites you'll find numbers like 202.12.121.23:48. Whatever comes after the colon is called the "port".
If you're using Internet Explorer, you click on Tools on your navigator, then on Internet Options, Connections (tab), LAN Configuration (button), and there you'll see the option to introduce your proxy.
Some proxies can make your navigation speed very slow, so you should try many until you find the right one.
Cute kids and a brilliant genius. Finally I got to see children being taught critical thinking. Honestly it was the first time in my life. Richard Dawkins is such a good person, the world needs much more like him.
thomist4u is just another idiot that proves Dawkins' point about religion being divisive. Is it REALLY that important to you that we believe the same myths you do? It's not as if this belief has made people any better. Give it a rest already.
My parents raised me to ask questions. They always said, "Einstein was so smart because he asked a lot of questions and then looked for answers." Little did my somewhat religious mother know, I would ask questions and get answers, but the answers I got were not always answers that aligned with her beliefs.

And by the way, Meathead Dawkins (I only say meathead, because Dawkins apparently doesn't have a spiritual soul), St. Thomas Aquinas proves that God exists. You know it. You misrepresent his view in The God Delusion, and you're too stubborn and/or foolish to admit it. WOW! What a great philosopher of education you are!! You can't even piece together Aquinas' basic logic based on empirical evidence. I'll say it again ... MEATHEAD! Maybe the Meathead school is the answer!
If you think Thomas Aquinas makes a good case, then you have clearly not read what he had written. The cases he makes have clear logical fallacies and no more 'prove' the existence of your specific version of a god anymore then those of any other untestable supernatural entity.
Aquinas' logic was not* based on empirical evidence, but upon logical assertions which in many cases shoehorn in a deity by special pleading.

I think Richard could start his own ATHEIST school with tax dollars from the ATHEISTS who are ignorant enough to think that God doesn't exist and that God is not connected to all areas of study, nevermind the school culture. That's fine, as long as it can be shown that the school is for the good of society. Go for it, Richard. However, leave the people of faith traditions who contribute to society in their respective good ways to educate their children with their tax dollars in their way.
You can tell whether a person is smart by their answers.
You can tell whether they are wise by their questions.
The basis of all understanding is "why". So please teachers. So please parents. When a child asks "why" Answer them honestly, with evidence and encourage them to challenge you. For example: Do not tell them not to steal because it is wrong. Tell them why stealing is wrong, and they will never steal.
I watched the four episodes and I can say I was one of the lucky children who grew up in a country where religion didn't exist as a subject. You can be disciplined,curious,observant,open-minded if you get a scientific education filled with logical answers.Religion,of whatever nature it may be,is an ugly tale.Because children's fairy tales are real nice. This is my opinion!
What really made me sad was hearing the Muslim girls spew their nonsense at Dawkins - The nonsense that have been shoved down their throats by the brain washed teachers, who themselves lost the ability to think at a young age.
This is horrible. I had no idea any of this shit was happening in Britain (I'm Canadian). Taxes fund the corruption of young minds?!! These schools have their own inspectors?!! What the fuck? How is this the year 2011? I'm so grateful to people like Richard Dawkins and other THINKERS who see through the falsely benevolent mask of religion and expose it's bullshit.
I am a Christian, and I DONT see religion as an alternative to science, but as a perspective. Therefore, we have science, curiosity, culture and if we want, a religion; all toghether in.
Dawkins seems to mix two terms: religion with fanaticism. However, even fanaticism can be in sports, music, politics, etc. But curiously, these types of fanaticism they are criticized by Dawkins. Thats no parcial, and therefore, its not open-minded.
The truths revealed to him through his work has exposed huge discrepancies between the "facts" being taught in religious schools and the facts on and in the ground.
Evolution does not dispute Sport,Music or Politics but it does dispute every creation story ever invented by man.
@belegulo I honestly believe he doesn't mix those 2. His problem is more with religious indoctrination, not religion itself, even though he does not believes in one.
@belegulo As a teacher Dawkins know to explain stars to children as "balls of fire" rather than "massive spheres of plasma mostly consisting if single proton atoms (Hydrogen) and double proton atoms (Helium) with a small fraction of other types of atoms"
If you don't believe me that children are more able to understand "ball of fire" try it on a son/daugher, niece/nephew, younger sibling, etc. See how well a young child, around 4-6 perhaps, will understand the idea of plasma.
@belegulo I'm pretty sure he knows that. He's just saying it in simpler terms. It's also technically wrong to call the earth a sphere because it's much closer to being an oblate spheroid. But, nobody is going to lose sleep on that distinction so stop being such a nit-picker.
Before watching this I was skeptical when people said that faith-based schools were so bad, I attended a Catholic school in Canada and I can say that I never saw a hint of descrimination, division, "faith science", and never heard the phrase " 'WE' as Catholic believe"(well except for once when a supply teacher coincidentally subbed in for our bio teacher during the evolution unit and started saying that) But after watching this I now understand where all this hate comes from and I support it.
you must be sick of non-scientists complimenting you sir richard dawkins but i just want to say, even i highly doubt you will ever read this.. is quite simple.. my discovery of you lead me to the discovery of life.. i am satisfied in a way that i will fight these non-atheists and present them the truth the have been clearly apparent to me.

Not all faith schools are equally pernicious; as far as I know C of E or Catholic schools don't teach pupils that the Bible is a science manual which should be believed over and above modern science. That's what so shocked me with the muslim girls school. The 'science' teacher, who knew nothing about biology, had clearly told the girls that the koran was to be preferred over modern scientific FACT. And this school receives public funds!

do the children know the definition of the word "evidence"?
pro404 10 months ago
I want there to be multiple clones of Richard Dawkins to inspire children everywhere with the wonders of REAL knowledge NOT the half-baked claptrap promoted by, for example, the muslim 'school' which was particularly pernicious. A crying scandal that such a place of miseducation should receive public funds and shame on the last government for encouraging such schools to exist.
DrZenith 10 months ago 29
@DrZenith yes I love when he gives his knowledge to children...it shows he really cares
spareld 2 months ago
The part where they are asking questions and Dawkins gives simplified answers sent chills down my spine. Especially when the girl asked about the dinosaurs and he said "we don't really know, you have to look at the evidence." Makes me kind of melancholic about society imposing superstitious, irrational beliefs on children - tooth fairy, Santa Claus, Easter bunny and god.
koochkooch 10 months ago 5
@koochkooch What do you mean by placing the Easter bunny under irrational beliefs next to clearly irrational things like Santa or god? Are you saying...no, it can't be true, my whole life was built upon the belief the Easter bunny exists so what you're saying must be wrong. You will burn in hell.
TudiRad 10 months ago
@TudiRad LOL!!!!!!!! Yeah, a lot of people have built their lives upon the Easter bunny unfortunately. Guess some people just prefer to be aEaster Bunny-ists. :P
koochkooch 10 months ago
@koochkooch I think there is a difference between the fairytales compared with God, see the fairytales are told to inspire imagination and creativity. We don't tell them they aren't real because we know they will eventually come to the same conclussion themselves. This is part of a very valuable learning experience, which should be the same for God, they should make up their own minds and we should continually challenge their ideals so that they learn from these and decide their own opinion.

drewskione 11 months ago
I'm not entirely for the way that child-psychologist asked the questions. The right answer she suggested demanded a logical approach, you'd for example have to go "lakes are still because water isn't added, which means that no force is exerted on the existing water" which is obviously too complicated for a child to handle, while it is easy to understand the "logic" behind any of the other explanations because they didn't see the logic behind the right ones.
M3t4lManiac 11 months ago
@M3t4lManiac Uh... so? The point is to explain that children find solace and understanding in supernatural and impossible explanations to natural phenomenon, the sort of thing you'd expect from the same lot who believe in Santa and the Tooth Fairy. It's to illustrate a certain evolutionary perspective from our ancestors who had little to stand by on their experience to explain certain aspects of life. We take that information and utilize it to understand why we still cling to the irrational.
monosaturated 11 months ago
@monosaturated I am perfectly aware of that, but the answers she is getting illustrates, to my observation, a trend that children will pick what makes most sense to then (in this case that they can make sense of). The furniture thing might be entirely unrelated. Non of the answers she posed were supernatural btw, they were just more intellectually convenient.
M3t4lManiac 11 months ago
An argument people could use against Rich is that Rich had a religious upbringing but still became Richard Dawkins. Plenty of those kids are asking questions internally, but they're wise enough to know there are some questions they cannot ask their teachers without getting in trouble. My fam is Jewish. As a kid, I remember sitting in the pews at temple and thinking, We don't believe this stuff literally (do we), so what do we really believe? (As so my agnosticism was seeded.)
cshubs 11 months ago
@cshubs This is true. Religious schools are not, in my experience, hospitable places for any kind of criticism. After all, if you express any shadow of doubt you are destined for hellfire. There is a social isolation factor, where the dissenter is judged by the 'religious' masses, who operate on a cult of fear.

I think people like Richard Dawkins are slowly...Very slowly, moving us toward a Utopia. The problem is that there is just so much that needs fixing, Richard could do his best and still it would only be a small dent toward a Utopia. I personally don't think that we'll get that far though. When truth arises people get pissed...We can't handle it and I think this will be one of the main reasons for our downfall be it de-evolution,the destruction of humankind or the destruction of Earth.

lewisburgatheist 1 year ago 3
I love the final scene with all those kids asking Richard questions that they're clearly confounded by. It's like this is their one and only opportunity to find out the answers to all the historical and cosmological mysteries they've been privy to. It's pretty cool. Dawkins may not know everything (as any scientist and science-enthusiast, including myself, will be quick to point out about themselves), but he's a pretty good person to start with.
monosaturated 1 year ago 87
@monosaturated I loved it too, it's actually kind of bittersweet.
I had a similar experience with my roommate (who is fairly religious) about a week ago, when she asked me if there was any sort of 'instinct' that explained why she wasn't upset about breaking up with her boyfriend. I explained it as part of natural selection - that he wasn't a 'suitable mate' for her. She seemed amazed, and kept asking me more questions - we stayed up for hours talking, but I was happy to answer. :)
bijoukaiba 11 months ago

MEATHEAD! Maybe the Meathead school is the answer!
thomist4U 1 year ago
@thomist4U

Thats no parcial, and therefore, its not open-minded.
belegulo 1 year ago
@belegulo
Dawkins is an Evolutionary Biologist.
The truths revealed to him through his work has exposed huge discrepancies between the "facts" being taught in religious schools and the facts on and in the ground.
Evolution does not dispute Sport,Music or Politics but it does dispute every creation story ever invented by man.
I don't see the point of your criticism.
Other than just wanting to criticize the man.
Feel better now?
BCT071 1 year ago
@belegulo I honestly believe he doesn't mix those 2. His problem is more with religious indoctrination, not religion itself, even though he does not believes in one.
wildreams 1 year ago
1:55 Stars are not balls of Fire, dear Dawkins; They are plasma. It is not the same as fire.
belegulo 1 year ago
@belegulo As a teacher Dawkins know to explain stars to children as "balls of fire" rather than "massive spheres of plasma mostly consisting if single proton atoms (Hydrogen) and double proton atoms (Helium) with a small fraction of other types of atoms"
If you don't believe me that children are more able to understand "ball of fire" try it on a son/daugher, niece/nephew, younger sibling, etc. See how well a young child, around 4-6 perhaps, will understand the idea of plasma.
godisuncouth 1 year ago
@godisuncouth Sorry, but the plasma could explained to a very hot kind of air (gas).
Because, in reality, stars has nothing to do with fire.
Or, may be, Dawkins doesnt know the difference; he is a biologist, so I understand.
belegulo 1 year ago
@belegulo I'm pretty sure he knows that. He's just saying it in simpler terms. It's also technically wrong to call the earth a sphere because it's much closer to being an oblate spheroid. But, nobody is going to lose sleep on that distinction so stop being such a nit-picker.
