2. Russia maintains an influence even today in region to make pressure in case of any intention of the Moldovans to re-unite with Romania.

Transnistria exists only because Russia wants that.Transnistria is a doll in Russia's hand.There was a war in 1992 between moldova and Transnistria and Trasnistria was loosing that war, so then a russian army (the 14 army) came to help Transnitria. Trasnistria isnt recognised by any country.That explains a lot of things !!

Moldova is valuable real estate. It is a region that in the hands of NATO could provide leverage against Russian power, and perhaps strengthen Ukraine’s desire to resist Russia. Putting NATO troops close to Odessa, a Ukrainian port Russians depend on, would cause the Russians to be cautious. Russians clearly understand this and are doing what they can to create a pro-Russian state in Moldova, or at least a state sufficiently unstable that no one can use it to threaten the Russians.
