What is known widely in the "western world" as "belly dance" is traditionally a compilation of many North Afrikan, Balkan, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean dances. Though Egyptian dance is often lumped under the "belly dance" umbrella, there is no one singular place of origin for the general "belly dance" styles performed. What there really should be is a better and more specified terminology for the wonderful, illustrious, and diverse background of what we call "belly dance".

Belly dance is not from the middle east. i hate it when people say that because they didnt do thier work if you research it you will see that the orgins is unknown. please research it because there is many forms of bellydance
Feel free to ask an antropology teacher ask several to get a wide range. The dance is believe to come from several differnt places. The places you have listed are also known to use the dance.
Uma vez baixei da internet o álbum "Desert Roses and Arabian Rhythms vol.:3" e essa musica veio como "Ajaja", é comum que álbuns baixados de internet venham com titulação alterada, mas espero ter ajudado!!
I have no idea why they even call it American Bellydance, when Belly dance is originally from the Middle East. Petite uses a lot of emotion through her facial expressions. The spinning shows you what kinds of other belly dancing moves there are. And they are part of different cultures. Which makes belly dancing very unique. Belly dancers are very exotic and they show much more seduction and satisfaction through their performance and they are clearly not like any other dance competitors.
Good point suraah, I feel the same way. A lot of movement but little emotion, grace or elegance. Looks like any other girl at a local dance competition.
Jamilla can dance well but I don't like the music she uses here. It is too hard. This is really American bellydance. I also find it boring when dancers spin again and again without doing anything else and without smiling. Is she having fun at all? But I guess teenagers like this kind of style.
she uses spinning as a spiritual thing for her-- like prayer or anything else would be for another person. How many people do you know that can spin for minutes on end and not stop or throw up?
Well I enjoy spinning when it is done with a music I like. It is just a matter of taste. I think she spins a lot (just like Rania for instance) because it is something she can do very well so she uses this move as often as possible. As I said before. I think it is just a matter of taste. :-)
She's tough!!! I have this DVD and I absolutely love it! Petite Jamilla and Sonia are my favorites. Sonia's drum solo is very sexy! I want to see her perform in person so bad! Bummer!
me encanta este viedo... petite es genial bailando con eso dos velos yo bailo arabe y es muy dificil hacer eso!!! aguante jamilla!! alguien me pude decir como se llama esa cancion????
just send me your email in a youtube messege and i'll try and send you the song sometime today, i cant promise anything as im rubbish at technology and my pc is a bit tempermental but i hope i can send it for you.
I believe those are pure silk veils, most likely A'kai Silks. You can buy them at the Akai silks website. Just look up A'kai and you'll find it! (can't post links)
It's not silk. It's some kind of synthetic fabric. I've taken two of Petite Jamilla's workshops, and she said she never dances with silk. I think the fabric is called synthetic tissue, but I am not completly sure. I know is not silk.
absolutley amazing!!!!!!!! i could keep watching it forever! thats extreme veilwork! and extreme spinning! that has to be one of my top 3 favourite performances
im a beginner and when i watched this video i thought wow!! i would get so freaking dizzy the other day i tried for like 5 times cause i just love this song and this perfomance but after my 3rd time i didnt get so dizzy in fact i got dizzy for a second and then it disapeared
I took a workshop from her last year and we asked her how she keeps from getting dizzy. She told us that she used to spin and spin and spin until she fell down. She just kept practicing until her body was used to it.
thank you! big help, much appreciated! also great that you are nice to, most people on here are rude, thank you for the tip! ;P take care.p.s what was her workshop like?
I LOVE that routine! Jamilla is just lovely and so talented. It took me ages to find out the name of the track she's dancing to - it's called 'Ajaja' by Ramses. You can find it in the Desert Roses 3 CD.
muy bueno... te felicito...

An early episode of the Queen of Turns.
There is more to 2x veil than boring endless turns in those hyper shalwar.

"Petite" Jamilla? How tall is she?
MiscreantK 4 years ago
I think she's called "petite" Jamilla because her mother is also called Jamilla, not because of her height.
