This is clearly not a song for The Maiden, Maiden´s cover lacks the feelin and atmosphere, and Dickinsons voice doesnt match the rythm (besides he sings everything the same way always), so go away maiden fanboys. I do like the Maiden, but I love Golden Earring. To each their own, and here I stand with the Dutch.
I was able to see them in the USA when they toured after their worldwide debut (Moontan). It was a great show. I have been waiting to see them again. Even now, after the age of Prog Rock has dimmed, There seems to be a certain nostalgia for the music styles and arrangements that made the 70's music trip so exciting. These guys are deservedly the most popular band in Holland. That's not taking anything away from the other bands out there. I wish them continued success.
I saw Golder Earring back when at the end of the show the drummer would set off an explosion and be launched over his drums and land on the stage. But later I heard he got seriously hurt doing it.I have been a fan since the early 70's.The word "Emotion" comes to mind when rating this song. There is more emotion in his voice.
Actually, this is the single version. The album version (from Switch) is twice as long and has much more impact. To me this album version is one of the best rock songs of all time!
Indeed, quite a stupid cameraman who didn't know the difference between George Kooymans on guitar (who plays that great solo on the end of the song) and Rinus Gerritsen on bass. Maybe he can't count, since he doesn't seem to notice the difference between 4 and 6 strings, lol.
@shecter100 I agree. I think that the phrase "under rated" is often over used, but I do recall that Creem Magazine writer said that Golden Earring "only had one song in them anyway," but I really have liked their LPs.
@prazmj I still have the album, just fantastic. I just gived all my LP from over 30 years ago to my son, who is just as mad as I still am for the genuine rock music.
I agree that this group is really underappreciated. This is a great song, and Maiden's cover is great in its own way. Kind of like when Metallica covered Turn the Page...I liked that version too, and it was 180 degrees different from Seger's version. Same deal here.
i agree with you on that...steve harris is a big fan of them... out of personal preference i like the maiden version better....this one is still good though
I always loved this song. And the rest of the "Switch" album was good too. Too bad this album didn't get the same recognition as "Moontan". The tunes are a little more popish, unlike the art rock of Moontan, but still, all good tunes. I'd like to find the song "The Lonesome DJ" posted here. Another great track.
"Switch" caused a lot of shit with the record producers, as they had promoted Earring as a rock band due to Moontans success, then they came out with "Switch". Have to say, although o.k, its the least fav of my Earring albums. I think l might agree with the record producers.
They have been playing awesome music since the mid 60's Totally under rated band. 8 miles high isn't even associated with them cuz it sounds so different from their 70's or 80's stuff.
eelkerients, you should feel very proud of this great band. I am American and I saw them live when I was a young teen. I later used both this song Kill Me (ce soir), and the song Switch as sound tracts for my video prouction class in college. Rock on G-Earring!!
:o)# KILL ME CE SOIR Deliciously mysteriously sounding.. Haven't heard it for YEARS. I also love the orchestral strings. Recorded/Released when I was in my diapers. Like another favourite of mine, Queen's A Night At The opera.
I got Ya'll beat I saw the "Switch" tour in 1975 (yes they played Ce Soir) and in 1974 when "Radar Love" was a hit. I cannot say enough about how good they were. If Ya wanna know, Ask Me.
Sorry Rock Child, I saw them in the 70's as well and was backstage with them in Holland for two days in 2001. See my videos for further evidence :). Yes, they were good then but even better in 2001. Worth a trip to Holland without hesitation. great music, great musicians and very cordial people.
One of my favorites and the only 1 I don't have on my MP3 player. Haven't heard it for since trading it in when picking up "Last Blast of the Century" and "Moon Tan". Had to have vanilla queen.
I have a question about the video though. At about 01:00 some soloing is going on, but the camera stays on the bassist. Is that one of those unfortunate cases where a cameraman sees no difference between guitar and bass?
Im asking because it appears that the guitarist generally "hides" behind the vocalist. I just want to know if that is on purpose. :)
This video is from a dutch top40 tvshow about 1975. The show never had live performances, only playback. Probebly the cameraman didn't see difference between a leadguitar and a bass. Actually the guitarist is the frontman of the band. He writes about all songs. He is a genius in writing music and an supurb guitarplayer. The band still does about 100 performances a year and is regarded as one of the best livebands ever by many musicians. I.e. Steve Harris of Iron maiden.
