Im 24yrs old i grew up on this music my grandpa always played jazz, so i gained an early apreciation for louis armstrong, dizzy, billie coltrane and the like, i love this music it truly does move me deep down inside#goodmusic
You know Billie and Lens sing the down note in the word 'Weather' - Ella and others didnt. Thats the tough note. Try singing it. Ella sang it in a constant note.
ooh Billie,! a style of your own. This artist cannot be duplicated, She was a phenomenol woman to say the least. A voice that only testifys to the truth of her demise. R.I.P. Billie.
I soo love the way she puts those expressive girly squeaky remarky bits in, and takes the pitch high and low, and puts in the occasional graunchy bit. The woman was a goddamn genius!!!!!!!!!!!!! So many have copied some have learned, I hope I eventually learn, but I can not even begin to copy!!!
@JoeCarlyle According to "Billie Holiday Discography-The Musicians" site, it appears to be Count Basie on organ. It states that he accompanied her on four numbers, all of them live. So, that would fit as this is a live performance. I can't find any reference to Waller playing with her though.
Easily my favorite version of this song. Billie's voice always does it for me. Coming from a 19 year old male who listens to the new stuff. While the new music may have good beats to dance to, it's always nice to chill and listen to how the real vocalists like Billie do it.
it's always interesting when i hear people try to sound more superior by saying , "oh how i wish they still made music like these" or "how i wish i was born in this era"
When in fact, with the technology we have today, we can practically escape into this era depending on the mood & then return to the legends of our days.
also liked what you said about dance. i'll listen to anything - even rock esp nowadays - but nothing beats RnB & hippop. Gotta be able to dance!
@TCt83067695 Can I just copy your comment and paste it whenever I watch my favorite old-timey clips and have to endure another annoying comparison with "Justin Bieber", "Beyonce", "Lady Gaga" and "auto-tune"? ;-)
@ treehugger - How you can compare Nina and Billie baffles me! The only thing they have in common is musical brilliance and distinctiveness. They are two completely different stylists!
I love that little trill type extra bit of the higher end. Love her. Have and will.

I think that what is happening to the younger generation, they have begun to appreciate lyrics that they can actually understand.
