  • College at 17, complements to you & your parents.

Excellent project to introduce people to segmented turning. Try cutting from the center toward the outside when hollowing, it goes a bit faster without any problems. Try to get 3M brand metal polishing pads. The fine grade produces about 400 grit result on wood. As it gets older it becomes equal to 600, 800, 1000. They last a long time but not forever, tiny bits tear away and end up in the chip bin.

  • @Buchmagg

Thanks mate, nice advice about the papers! I am afraid is is a little tricky hollowing inside out as the bed of a mini lathe gets in the way. Otherwise I would already be doing it.

    Thanks agian, Alex.

  • @TeenWoodworker If you mean to say the Tail Stock gets in the way, will it not slide off the end of the bed ? If you mean the bed gets in the way cause you can't stand in front of the surface being cut, well, that is just a matter of getting accustomed to something a little different.

  • @Buchmagg

The tailstock is removed when I hollow a bowl, it is really that when I use the long handled bowl gouge it hits against the bed of the lathe becasue the swing is so small so I favor a push cut instead.

  • @TeenWoodworker Speaking of which. I assume you use the scraper on the outside of the vase because you can not use the skew chisel. Get a skew, film yourself making a mess of things. Then film between practice sessions until you are proficient. This would make a very good video. All other vid show a guy doing it perfectly. If you show the mistakes and process of learning this would be unique and very valuable to the community.

  • @Buchmagg

I did not use a skew on the outside, although I can use one, I have a video showing how BTW.. I am not the best, but I can. It is really I feel safer using a scraper as should never catch. The finish is not as good and requires sanding but it does the trick.I will however try and use it more in the future if you want.

  • @TeenWoodworker I need to watch a video on How to find things on You Tube. I only see 24 vids from you but there is a (35) next to your name. You say you have a vid on the Skew but I don't see it. Well after allot of trial & error I have figured out how to see all a person's vid titles. I'll watch your Skew vid next.

  • where did you get your jointer from?

  • @Pedrofreestyle97

    Ebay, second hand unused. £30

  • How do you get the high gloss on it?

  • No more hot glue? I kind of liked it. Showed us that we didn't have to spend $100+ USD to buy a chuck for our lathes and we could still do nice bowl turning.

  • @jallenmorris1

Very true my friend, although it great to move up in the world!

    Alex :-)

  • Hi Alex. Really awesome work! Just wanna know what lathe you use and chisels!?! Actually buying my first lathe in the next few weeks after watching your videos and just wanting some buying advice. Just a pleasure to watch!! Cheers.

  • Very nice work. You are an inspiration to my nine year old son.

  • another great vid alex...thanks for teaching us how to do this. all the best with your studies - one piece of advice i can give you at my wise old age is that it is really important (if not vital at times) to have a creative outlet away from your studies just to give you that balance in life. keep doing things you enjoy and it will power you up in other parts of your life. all the best mate!

  • @teenwoodworker dude ffs please please keep your thumb on top of the tool my mates son lost his thumb cuz of a knot

  • If all of my students were this talented, we could rule the world!

  • @hoold90

Ha! He gave me a laugh. LOL

  • Where do you get your hardwoods from? I can;t find anywhere in the UK

  • what course you doin

  • @mersyturning

Maths, Phsics, DT and Business Studies

  • @TeenWoodworker Their my favourite subjects;)

  • Alex, again you made a good video. I am intrigued about how you discovered using foam rubber for a final buffing tool?

With college, don't feel obligated to do video's. If the stress is gettin' to ya. lay tool to wood and knock out what you feel like doing. If you by chance hit the record button on the camera, or not. don't sweat it...

  • @Aharndts

    Hi,

The foam really came about becasue I was looking for somthing really sort and wouldn't get cought up if it was to catch. It worked out nicley so I kept using it.

Also don't worry about the videos, I think it came across as if it was a chore, but its not! Its just I sometimes get questions asking for the next video so I sometimes have to focus to keep the videos coming.

    Have a great day, Alex.

  • Goof job, Alex! I like the shape and the wood combination works well.

  • i'm not gonna lie, you got an awesome set up for a work shop. Man i wish i had one like that!

  • nice job, best wishes in college
