as driving on the autobahn myself there is a big difference in culture..americans weave in and out of traffic which in Germany that is looked upon as a big no no...also they take your picture in your car and you cant fight it in court..your gonna get your ticket in the mail and you pay it..no gettin off....
@jackwhite910 Yeh, 70 mph I think is pretty standard for southern states, now days. 70 is probably not to bad for a state like NC. But western states like MT with their wide open spaces, need to have way higher speed limits. You can easily die of boredom driving that speed in the west.
stupid government bastards. i assure you our speed limits will only go down from here. some are ecen in favor of reimposing the "55mph National speed limit" for all freeways and everything.
@creamyfilling102 I really don't see that happening. People are not going to go for that 55 crap anymore. Utah and Texas have recently raised their speed limits to 80 mph. I'd hope that Montana and Nevada will follow their lead.
I got my one - and only - speeding ticket in Montana. U.S. 93 (which has, or had, a special 65 MPH speed limit), on Evaro Hill.
However, it was a $20 fine (I could have paid the cop if I had the $20, but I mailed in my fine to the Missoula County courthouse) and twice I pulled a routine driving record a years later and it never showed up.
To this day, it's still legal to exceed the speed limit by 10 MPH if you're passing another car.
I drove that same highway. everyone was driving 90mph, even a highway patrol. then a yellow c6 corvette went by the cop at 95mph and i decided i might as well too. 1 mile in front of the cop we ended up racing each other at a reasonable and prudent speed in excess of 150 mph for over 5 miles. lol.
I've traveled that highway alot since 2000 -present and the cops have never pulled me over while going 90 mph or less in the 75 mph zone. In Utah their are spots that are 80 mph.
i was in montana in 2008, went to Big Sky Montana, it was 75, so i was going like 83, i heard they had to get a speed limit to get funding from the feds
i love montana so much.. it is a much more carefree and nice place to be .. not alot of big governmnet. i want to move up there in the next few years.. i love it so much. i am going to move to the columbia falls area by kalispell in flathead valley.
actually crash rate was not bad, the federal government threatened to cut federal funding if montana did not lower the speed limit.. most people in montana loved the freedom until government took it away..
going back to your statement wishing the speed limit was 80 you can actually drive 5 over the posted speed limit trough the state of montana but im a montana driver with montana plates so out of state drivers usually get pulled over but you might be able to get away with it just thought i would give u a heads up
Yeah thats all good. But I was kind of thinking about an 80 MPH speed limit, so I could drive like 85 - 90 without worrying about getting a ticket. 75 is not that bad though. Here in CA most of the freeways are 55 or 65, with 70 only in rural areas.
if that were in florida you would have major accidents because there is always an old guy or a dumnass on there phone going 50 mph on the left lane of highways.or just people blocking all lanes and causing traffic jams. pisses the hell out of me
It's interesting, but not all too surprising. Traffic fatalities increased by more than 50% after they posted a state speed limit for morning traffic...
Again, politicians seem to be there only to please a select group of PAC's and lobbyists than actually protect the "represented."
Again, I will cite Germany. Traffic fatalities are drammatically lower on the German Autobahn, a road with very few speed restrictions, then on the U.S. Interstate System... Damn thos hungry pigs!
A 75 speed limit is right inline with Europe and appropriate for multi-lane highways. 1/2 of My state's massive 3, 4, lanes + shoulder both sides are still 55, no pleasure in driving and all ways apprehensive about getting pulled over. Speeding over limit listed on violation ticket says 1-9 over and so on, that tells me this is a 0 tolerance mafia family police state that likes terrorizing citizens because of unreasonable speed limits, every time i see a trooper i hope he dies.
The amount of accident fatalities stayed about the same through the time periods of when there was no speed limit, to "Resonable and Prudent", to the current speed limits. The only reason it changed is because the federal government threatened to cease government funding to Montana for road construction and maintenance. Too bad, it was sure fun while it lasted.
"The only reason it changed is because the federal government threatened to cease government funding to Montana for road construction and maintenance."
Actually it changed when the Montana Supreme Court ruled that "Reasonable and Prudent" was unconstitutional. That left MT with no speed limit what so ever. Lawmakers were afraid of the consequences of that decision.
"Pero a dia de hoy el limite de velocidad en Montana sigue siendo el mismo o lo quitaron,es decir el limite "razonable" ,imitando a las Autobahn alemanas???"
It WAS like the Autobahn. Reasonable & Prudent is no more. Now the speed limit is 75 MPH.
Pero a dia de hoy el limite de velocidad en Montana sigue siendo el mismo o lo quitaron,es decir el limite "razonable" ,imitando a las Autobahn alemanas???
I consider myself a fairly fast driver and would probably be only doing 90-100 there with no speed limit. The speed kills idiots need to realize that no speed limit =/= everyone will top out their car
Well I agree, 90-100 is my speed of choice too. However if someone has the skills, and a car that can handle 100 MPH plus speeds, I don't really have a problem with them driving that fast. So long as they don't endanger me or anyone else on the road.
I lived in Montana the year they tried that law ... something like 275 people died on the Montana roads that year I remember something like 4 times more than in Maine that same year but, they went back down to having a speed limit at about 75
I grew up in MT. Such a great place to be from and visit, however living there is a whole different story. I've been in Seattle for 21 years, but go home every Summer.
yeah...its terrible right now. I just took a drive up going to the sun highway in GNP last weekend. God tourist's piss me off with stupid questions and comments about stuff.
I remember the days. I got pulled over for going 120 MPH and was told to slow it down a little. THe 20 mile drive to work only took 12 minutes daily in the car and 7 to 8 on the crotchrocket!!! I still drive like that. Great Video.
"for idiots like you..who feel the need to be a show off"
Hahaha. Some of us have the skills needed to drive fast, and some don't. Sorry to hear you are not one of us.
Just remember. Just because you drive like an 80 years old lady on her way to church. Doesn't mean you are any less of a man. Actually it does. That was a lie.
Wow, thanks for the "you are wrong" comment-actually, no thanks--seems pretty rude--and depending on where you live in Montana, the speed limit has decreased--not all US highways and interstate sections in Montana are uniform.
You ended your video in my hometown of Polson, Montana! Good ending, on beautiful Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi! Cool video, and good songs to go with it!
Thanks. If you haven't already you might want to check out my next two videos on Glacier Park. Both have more scenes of Flathead. The link is under video responses, if your interested.
u know it is sad when the federal government tells us how to live in our own states. people loved the open spoeed limit it is sad we have no rights in america at all anymore.
Yea. Of course we need to have some type of speed limits. But I agree. If you are driving on the open road, and not interfering with anyone else, it should be pretty much your own business, how fast your driving.
When was this video shot? Montana hasn't had a "reasonable and prudent" speed limit for nearly 10 years now. (not that any Montana person obeys this law). Now the speed limit on the Interstate ranges from 60-70 mph.
Thanks for posting a Montana clip--it really is the best state in the USA!
Yep, I shot this in September 1997. I think it was about one year before R&P ended. Even with the current speed limit, I wouldn't change much in the way of my speed either. It was just nice to be able to relax, and not have to worry about the possibility of getting a speeding ticket.

Happy New Year!
Montana was the first U.S. state I visited. I loved the speed sign that greeted us at the border from Canada around Easter 1997.
It is a real shame that it is no more.
