Jerry Sadowitz who appeared in Terry Blair&Anouchka's video of Ultra Modern Nursery Rhymes, complained that this video infringed upon his copyright. Jerry's been replaced.
It has taken 5 months to do this!
Although angry with Jerry, I am also grateful because, I would have never learned Adobe After Effects and graphic animation. So thank you Jerry!
Jerry has been replaced by a number of colourful characters! Marc Bolan even makes an appearance! Bet he won't complain??!!!
I really like the Go Go's version of this song but I think Fun Boy 3 has a better band and does a better job on this song. It is really a good song regardless of who sings it.
It's lost on most of y'all teen fucks, but our generation knows these guys should have gone further. Aside from that, the social aspects of this vid represents the agnst of the downtrodden (singer), the happy (jamaican dudes), and the lost love (the drummer and fag boy singer,) LOL But alas, kick ass song.....
The copyright laws in Canada are so stupidly defined I can't run the Go Go's interpretation here! This is good though. Not really a cover since Terry Hall wrote the piece. Screw the Canadian Queen, whomever she might be.
ur mom was the drummer- ha thats classic. I guess she could have been. She seems totaly bored to be drumming too, but being aloof was the cool thing in the 80's. Except for the Jamaican dudes that were usually rockin' out.
terry hall really is the king of lookin alienated and lonesome on a stage full of people. i am a massive fan of terry hall/neville staples and the eighties, and this really shows up the decade for how great it is!!! im off to the barbers for a "terry".
Yes, I recall it, too. It was a better version, imo.. Terry looked more "lonely" on the stage, even though it was cramped as this one is. I love this one but the other one was even better. There was even some foreign-language overdub one.. do you know this one? It was not really Terry singing it.. it was overdubbed and was really cool.
June Miles Kingston, thats her name - thanks carrollkrc for reminding me. I wonder what became of Terry Hall. The last I saw of him he was wandering round a lake muttering to some bloke about moving away from Coventry to the countryside. I think it was some Open University programme I stumbled upon in the dead of night.
Last I heard was that the Specials were reforming for a tour in late 2008, and possibly recording some new tracks. Check wiki and his own web site. How much like Robert Smith does he look in this! That would be an absolute superb double act.
fuckin spot on days! the 80 s beat any shite today! women, beer ,music ,fuking time goes past so quick thats means your life has and is great meaning yeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeyeey
what a magic song! (When I bought the recording of it back in the 80ies I was extremely positively surprised that there was that harpsichord theme of Miss Marpe on the record!) Real neat band style.
I saw these guys play two shows at the Palace in Hollywood the summer of 1983. Awesome band and music. They ended the show with "Gangsters" then played The Doors "The End". Next week they play in San Francisco and then break up. Sorry that all good things must come to an end. Terry Hall is a genious.
I love this. I love the gogos, but this song really spoke to me strongly in a different way. I miss the "hush my darling" part from the non live version. But the plain guitar funk in this one really adds something. Drummer is cute!
Love that cello, so deep and soulful. The male & female duo near the end, this version always takes me to another place. Love the hushed base, in an era that had more than its share of high-pitched shillin. (I love the GosGos version of this too; I'm talking about a lot of mainstream pop of that era - Journey and Whitney Houston for example.)
No one could believe, back in 84, that I liked this version better.....and I still do! Besides, I was totally in love with their back up band...c'mon a female singing drummer..and that cello player!
Yes, I totally agree, it's not often a live version is better than the record, but this is so cool, and those girls...mmmm..are they members of the gogo's??
June is very pretty here

"...they have a shield,
nothing must be revealed...
...There's a weapon that we can use in our defence,
Silence!...
Our lips are sealed...
It doesn't matter what they say,
no one's listening anyway..."
What a song! Human nature, neatly captured.
