  • Rakim.... Taking it back to my high school days. Tight rhymes, tight beat, yo the systems were bumping. These beats are still hot even today. You can't touch Eric and Rakim. If I still listened to music, you best believe... Rakim would stay bumpin in the trunk. Mad love for Rakim... always...

  • @Tonski999 Fuck you little kid

  • I just bought the Follow The Leader CD for a couple of bucks off of Amazon.com. This is one musical album. The instrumentals are dope. If you are a beginning rapper who can't afford to buy beats, the instrumentals on this record are good enough to rhyme over to perfect your freestyling and art of songwriting. Paid In Full is their best album but Follow The Leader kicked a lot of records asses in '88.

  • Was fortunate enough to see these cats' back in the day @ Kemper Arena in K.C....show was ridiculous!!!On the bill:BDP,Eric B. &Rakim,Ice-T,NWA,Too-Short,Biz Markie, and a few other opening acts not noteworthy in the realm of classic hip-hop from the prime era of the movement...ticket was $13.75!!!

  • @clarencejones07 thanks brother,ima check tht.

  • Hard ass Suits as well, Where can I get that Rakim suit, I'd wear that everywhere just to f' with people. The gym the club, the grocery store. Man that suit is dope, word, I'd be like whatcha number baby to to clerk , and I'm out. 88 mofo My class was 88 if I had graduated. Best class ever.

  • @Mankindtv i know what you mean badass suits just wear them around would be ballin

  • Man that bassline is hard as hell

  • THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE!!!!

  • Now that is what cool beats are made of The blackbyrds from the 70' mixed in :)

  • who the fuck disliked this ? go to hell muthafuka

  • Perhaps my favorite song by Eric B. & Rakim!!!

  • @drieey its up there.it probably was their greatest with follow the leader runnin a close second

  • dope..

  • ever since eric b and rakim broke up, rakim sucked after that

  • Who eva didi it betta?? NONE.

  • Old School Rules

  • Classic Hip-Hop...Rakim one of the best ever

  • JUST BANGIN!

  • I can't tell you all how much I love this song. All of my initials are R. This will forever be my personal theme music. they just DO NOT make hip-hop like this anymore. True MC-ing and DJ-ing.

  • "Hip hop is making more sense when I'm stating / Paragraphs and potential to prevent you from using my instrumental"

    -Classic shit

  • My fucking speakers cant take the damn bass.

  • Listened to this more than have had hot dinners....It's simple really = REAL

  • This music is magic, holy. It will live for thousands of years.

  • I use this song to teach my 4 year old daughter the letter "R' with this song. She is 20 now. In preschool she argured with the teach and said that's not R that's doing it with the R and I had to come up to the school and explain...They wanted to know about doing it...I laughed and played the cassette!

  • @Worshipandsang That's hot...lol!!

  • my friend got me hooked on this nigga

  • @dantethesaint7 Best ever. All his albums except his last one, are all 10/10 classics

  • @ThatIncredibleJordan i didnt like hes last one as mutch...i liked the old schoolness of early work of his but even the second one sounded modern and i liked it?.....i respect rakim though so mutch

  • everybody is so quick to praise rakim and he deserves it but god damn eric b's work is just as groundbreaking and amazing as rakim's

  • @TheDIEGOayala09 False! Eric B was known for stealing beats and claiming production. Case in point....a lot of production was done by Large Professor but Eric B just claimed the credit.

  • @xtrawalk really? thats a steep accusation... idk i'll look into it, thanks for the heads up, they do have their similarities...

  • Anybody can easily grab this mp3 file at soundnabber..com

  • They wondered why the album was late. I was giving them time to get the last 1 straight. Classic.

  • Simply superb!

  • these muthaphuckas made good music

  • I STILL LIKE THIS ONE

  • this is it

  • I grew up listening to rap in Marquette, Michigan which is in the middle of nowhere. Even I know that Rakim is one of the greatest men to hold a microphone in the history of hip-hop. 20 years later, his music still resonates.

  • Used to love this one when they played it at club hordern sydney

  • Rock Creek Park - The Blackbyrds

  • ieah

  • It gets no better than this. I swear these young cats don't know what they missed.

  • My Brother,R.I.P,had jus bought an 86 vette and that was the first time i heard this song,Eric B..and Rakim in his car,Riding Down Division Goin Towards Rush st. in Da Chi.The yr of 88. If we had known Cabrini Greens was as bad as it was,,We would have neva gone that way.

  • wheres the bassline from? i think ive heard it on a nas song or something? its pretty awesome

  • @danthedonHBB It's from an old school jazz song called "Rock Creek Park" by the Blackbyrds

  • beats sounds like rock creek park

  • @matteoT100 Good ear.....that's where they got it from

  • Keep doing it with The R!!!!

  • this is so sick!!!!One of the BEST baselines & hook!!!!when the drum goes crazy..AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

  • This guy will be remembered as one of the greatest lyricist in rap history!

  • one of the last vinyl I bought 20 years ago ...

  • some people write here so much stuff like the whole bible ...just listen to the music and chill man :)

  • @xdarkmanXx and some people dont know shit about music!! its know bilbe writing just teaching wack niggas about real hip hop!

  • yeah man real hip hop is teaching us very much xD

  • @adduneek yeah i have lived and loved hip hop for alomost 30 years.

  • LOL ;)

  • ♥

  • rakim changed the way mc's starting rymin' before him everybody pretty much sounded like run -dmc or real old school. i remember when me and all the gods first heard my melody and eric b. for pres we could not believe how dope is flow was. he is still the greatest mc of all-time! and notice i said mc and not rapper. there is a big difference to me. peace!!

  • he's not the greatest mc of all time, I know what you're saying but he didn't change the way mc's rhyme, whodini and LL rhymed before him and used internal and multisyllabic rhyme before he did, and u can't mention that w/out kane and kool g, so it's all a matter of opinion.

  • first of all if u r not atleast 38 years old or better i dont want to even have this conversation with u. i am sick and tired of people who were not there when the music or artist were in there prime juding hip hop. i am not some old head who is not current or up to date on music. i been listng to hip hip since i was 9 years old and iam 40 years old now. i am a hip hop dj and and historian. when rakim drop in 86 there was no rapper who sound like him.

  • age has nothing to do with it for one, there's more naive childish middle aged niggas out there then anything, and the only reason they like rakim the best is because he was reppin for ny where they were from. lyrically there are ppl that can get on his level and even surpass him, I don't really care what anyone says, nobody can claim to be the best rapper because they all have different styles. and plus kane and kool g never said he was the best, you shouldn't put words in ppl's mouths

  • plus I named two artists that used multisyllabic rhyme before he did, regardless of what they sound like, they should get the credit for it. you may not like their styles but it's undeniable, rakim was one of the first but not the first. rakim even said he was a fan of hip hop before he got involved in an interview. even he got his style from the true originators.

  • in this case it does because i was there when he dropped and saw the effect he had on hip hip!!

  • also i am not putting words in nobody mouth. i know those brothers personaly and had many discussions about hip hop with them and they both agreed he was the dopest.

  • now whatever niggas u like u stick to them but u or know young buck going to teach or tell me about this music. i was b boying and djying when u had to come inside b4 sun down!

  • and iam noy saying he was teh greatest because iam not from ny buy i have lived ,dj, and sat down with the greatest hip hop artist in history. so chill out homie!

  • i'm chill well you heard my point, he was one of the greatest no doubt, but I don't feel like anyone can be "the greatest" mc because even the golden aged mc's got their styles from melle mel, LL and the furious five and sugarhill gang. so that's it.

  • u right my brtother no need to argue. but i just have my own list who i feel are top five of all-time.

  • and u r right i dont think melle mel is talk about enough. because in mels era he was so nice. and i think the song the "message" is a classic for so many reasons.

  • one more thing brother. sugar hill did not right ther own raps. grandmaster caz wrote there rymes.

  • and grand master caz got beat out of his cut of the money from sylvia robinson who own sugar hill records.

  • and rakim and LL cool J sound nothing alike at all.!

  • what i say about rakim is not just a opinion , i was there djing and living hip hop! LL cool was a lover boy and whodini was on some euro sound shit! but even they would tell u that rakin was teh greatist lyricaly

  • rakim who style changed of thing. the paid in full album made niggas want dapper dan clothing(if u even know who that is) ro-a-afella made a movie after rakim album called paid in full.

  • and last i know kane and cool rap personally and they both will tell u rakim is the greatest and look at teh back cover of rakim paid in full album and u will see kool g rap sitting down. he look up to rakim

  • Comment removed

  • only one R. sorry folks, way ahead of his time, Untouchable.

  • this song is fresh, its sampled in classic with krs one and nas and kanye

  • I know there was a remix of this song that I can't find anywhere. I remember Power 99 used to play it back in the day.

  • Rap totally changed when Rakim dropped. All Emcees had to up their game. That anybody can be a rapper mentality totally dried up. NOBODY was putting knowledge, delivery and b boyism like Rakim.

  • Yeah, but it wasn't just Rakim. It was the year of 86-87 that saw a huge change in the sound of hip hop music. Remember, BDP had also dropped in 86 and their sound was completely different, . Everybody that had a single out in 86, blew the doors off of hip/hop in 87- 88.

  • my point is, most of the ones that aren't cocky brag tracks or that attempt to be conscious, also mostly point back to him in some way or the other, and it's not the type of song that would actually raise awareness like rappers like krs 1, that just wasn't his style. plus i know it wasn't only him, i was explaining to some1 earlier that that was a weakness, his subject matter.

  • What are you here to nag about Rakim A.L.L.A.H or just to critize him about his lyrical abbility. It is obvious that you have to kill time writing about that every rapper on this planet is great and God Ra is just an ordinary rapper. I think you never can get to appreciate the contribution Rakim A.L.L.A.H gave to the hip hop community. I think that rappers like Tupac and Biggie were the first rappers to introduce you to the charts and it is obvious that you have no access to the underground rap.

  • nope, people keep harrassing me on here whenever I introduce to them that there are other rappers out there besides rakim, so maybe you guys need to be more open minded.. rakim was the shit no doubt, but I like other rappers too. he isn't ordinary.. but neither r they

  • RAkin the god was so fuckin nice!

  • The R.., peace to the nation of islam.

  • this was when rap was rap.miss those dayz rakim allah the best to do it ...hotep

  • One of the all-time best bass lines from a rap. Is it a sample? Anyone know where it's from? Another great bass line: "The Big Payback," EPMD.

  • @TenRen100

    Hello

the bass line is Blackbyrds - roc creek park

  • Interesting stuff. Thanks. Eric B.'s interpretation of that riff sounds better than the original!

  • TRUE CLASSIC 5***** (nothin less)

  • pull out a pad a paper kid! this how it should be done

  • "any rapper(cept gucci) rapping today owe their style to the god"

    Hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

no offence, but thats the DUMBEST SHIT i've heard in a while, believe that.

"ept gucci"??? hahahaha! what about oj the juice man? ha!

  • Eh yo, you serious son? I can't believe you still trying to discredit the God Rakim. You sound like Freddie Foxx! Unless you here to pay homage, step off! If you have any respect for the Hip Hop you'd fall back son. Unless you from Kool Herc's era, I dont feel you have the right to question these 68' born mc's. Like, this aint 88! We're in 2009 and we've seen the great impact Rakim has had, so any doubt against him his fuckery! Fall back son, Fall back. Peace and study your 120.

  • kid please, quit the bullshit, i'm not discrediting Rakim, i love his music, i'm just letting the truth be known, you tell me you cant take me serious, ha! how the fuck would some one who says "any rapper(cept gucci)" haha! dont let ignorance rule over you. Foxx ain't shit, why even bring him up, don't let dogma

    trap you, open you mind.

  • What song was this sampled from?

  • The Blackbyrd's Rock Creek Park ;)

  • Thanks Tim

  • Comment removed

  • wrong, Rakim is one of the greatest, but there are others MCs with a different styles, therefor its impossible to truly determine who is the "Greatest of All Time". and thats that.

  • where do you think other rappers got their style from? Do the knowledge and you'll realize that Ra is the originator, blueprint of the poetic mc. Like fuckin research before you come at me son.

  • Percee p has been active since 79, eith a whole different style.

Kool G. Rap came out at the same time Rakim did, and he(G. Rap) has a whole different style,

Kool Keith has been active since 84, and he has a whole different style.

child please do your hip-hop homework,

    have a good day.

  • You just named off a bunch of mc's. What's your point? Ask Chuck D, Grandmaster Caz, and the godfather Kool Herc who the greatest is and they will all say Rakim Allah. You need to understand that Rakim changed how mc's approached the mic. Like, Ra basically manifested the poetic, modern mc that we see today. Anyways, Im not gonna argue over facts son. Enjoy the music and rock with your opinion its all good. Peace.

  • so you're unable to understand? ha!

come on child, from where do you think Big Pun got his style from? Kool G. Rap

from where do you think R.A. The Rugged Man got his style from? Kool G. Rap

ask them who the greatest is, pun bowed down to G. Rap, R.A. will say Kool G. Rap.

its all opinion, Herc, Nas... prefer Ra

Vinnie Paz, R.A. prefer Kool G. Rap

quit being so closed minded, there are many MCs out there that can hang with Ra and thats that.

  • nah homie you wrong rakim is the goat really from a 20yo all them other styles originated in eric b is president any rapper(cept gucci) rapping today owe their style to the god and now you in tune and up to par you doing it with the R

  • "all them other styles originated in eric b is president" WTF??? check percee p's flow, Nothing like Rakim's flow, and P has been ACTIVE since 79, check Kool G. Rap's flow, NOT rakim's flow and he's been active as long as Rakim, ask The Rugged Man, who he influenced him the most, he'll tell you KOOL G. RAP, not Rakim, but dont get me wrong Rakim is one of my favorites MCs, one of the greatest, not the greatest, because there is not "goat" way too manny styles out there.

  • i wasnt sayin it like that i was saying our rappers in the market now like these new dudes i know G Rap dont owe his style to nobody but nas jay pac big and several other artist definitely do except gucci because hes fuckin not hip hop hes rap on some shit real i dont think gucci ever heard a rakim song

  • actually pac started rapping about the same time rakim first came out, he just came out with a major deal a few years after rakim did. big got more of his style from tupac, because pac put biggie on and gave him shows. now jay and nas, yeah they probably did. but just because one person knows how to rhyme doesn't mean that anyone else that rhymes later is "getting their style" from them. I mean the man is great, but overly crediting someone like that isn't the way to go.

  • Tupac also said 'Darker the flesh deeper the roots'. I think he meant 'Darker the skin deeper the roots'. How sloppy for a overly credited rapper.

  • It is not overly crediting him. Rakim A.L.L.A.H is getting the props he deserves. If Pac and Biggie were still alive they would disagree with you. What God Rakim did was taking hip hop to the next level by influencing young rappers to be aware of their position in the game of rap, which is raising awareness and how to practice their minds to become more conscious. I think Biggie could not do that with his lines like 'Black and ugly as ever'. He was putting down black people just like the Quakers

  • wow, speaking for two dead rappers huh? I seriously doubt they'd disagree with me seeing as their styles are alot more original then people give them credit for, and I never said rakim wasn't a great rapper, I just said that people are giving him credit for inventing flow when he didn't even invent rap, he brought his own unique style into it that "inspired" rappers to be themselves and rhyme their own way. btw, pac did like rakim, but ask rakim about tupac, he'd tell you how it is.

  • as far as raising consciousness, if you even listen to most of his music before 97, it was all about himself and how good his rap skills were, if anything public enemy and kool g helped raise "awareness" of black people and their place in society.

  • I think you are waiting for acknowledgement and everybody should agree with you that Pac and Big are the best rappers and that God Rakim is an ordinary rapper. As far as skills, flow, bragging and boasting techniques. There is no rapper yet who can match with him. I listen to rap music since the early ninties and I have been listening to Rakim's records when he was still with Eric B. His style is very universial and every rhyme he drops he represents the Nation of Gods and the Earths. No Doubt.

  • " there is no rapper yet who can match with him". um, you need to check out big daddy kane, whodini, and kool g to start with... that's all I'm gonna say

  • They are dope rappers, but they are still not able to write a song with the right dosage of the metaphors. I mean Big Daddy Kane, Whodini and Kool G Rap are few of the rappers who got skills, But Rakim A.L.L.A.H got more skills than the rappers you mentioned. I think it is better to compare God Rakim with Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap than Big and Pac.

  • well, that's your opinion, but there's no point in discussing this with you because you aren't even listening to what I'm saying lol.. if it makes you feel better to feel that he's the best go right ahead, but obviously he's not lyrically, regardless of his impact.

  • btw, rap aint all about metaphors and bragging, the reason why I don't consider him the "best" is because he talks mostly about himself, where there's other rappers(like the ones i named) that talk about actual socially relevant concepts as well as having that metaphorical creativity and word play. plus you obviously haven't listened to enough pac and big to make that statement, those two earned the title of 2 of the best rappers "ever" for a reason, and even rakim admires them. tht's all

  • @buddhistichindu actually you dont know about rakims catalog as far as socially relevant topics every album he drop had social issuses in it you just have to listen his first album paid in full that particular song he was addressing changing from his old ways and habits as far as getting money should i go on

  • @houseofjrk not really, on his fourth album in 92 he started to have some socially relevant lyrics, but at first it was all about metaphors pertaining to how skilled he was as an mc, and it still mostly is, but he has a few. it's not something to argue about

  • That's not all true, as the track " The Ghetto" was a conscious song he delivered off his 3rd LP. Also he would mention many aspects of his teachings from the 5 Percenters in many of his rhymes.

  • I agree with one of the lines Pac quoted that is 'Bow down to no man'. Peace.

  • Look in the dictionary for the word "SICK" and you should see a picture of Eric B. & Rakim.

Question: Is Eric B and Rakim still cool?

  • The went their own ways aggges ago. Eric B was on the more buisness side of it.

  • mine doesn't have pictures

  • cool as ever

  • You bet your ass they're still cool. From now till the end of time. 'Nuff said.

  • @MrYaw1

    Answer: Nigga, yea.
