I tried Doom95 in a 33MHz 486. The performance was horrendous. That was the first time I installed DirectX. At that time, it isn't bundled with Windows 95.

By the way. For many years, most video card drivers emulated low resolution modes in higher resolution, by stretching the pixels two-fold (eg.: 320x240 in 640x480). Sometimes, that was slower, than original hi-res. That sucked hard.
