This isn't from The South Bank Show. It was presented by the late Anthony H Wilson and is very likely to be taken from his part-networked arts show "The Other Side Of Midnight."
The South Bank Show has been presenetd by Melvyn Brag since its inception.
Morrisey was a typical 80's popstar. He thought he was more intelligent and socially conscious than he actually was. He criticised the government for being free market capitalists, yet that system allowed him to make and sell music without it being taxed to the hilt, and it made him very rich, and he hasn't redistributed it himself. Oh, and Norman Tebbit is from a working class family. He had aspiration and was willing to work hard to achieve his goals. Morrisey is a clueless twat.
Of course in my own opinion, Mr. Tebbit is an outstanding politician who's achievements helped put this country's industry and economy back on its feet. He, his wife, and his family have had more than enough suffering in their lifetime. He is a truly gifted politician and he put his orating skills and actions in defending the cause of the working man. He is a champion of our times. I find joanofarc's comments spiteful and unjust. Politicians are people too and lost their lives and livelihoods!
I dunno much about Morrissey except that from this exerpt he apparentally can't help but actually "judge a book by its cover". As he didn't read Mr. Tebbit's book it calls into question his right to generalise Tebbit as not knowing of poverty for if he read the book he'd have realised Norman Tebbit was raised in a very poor district of London in the 1930s a decade of economic turbulence and later on, war.

Morrissey doesn't know what he's talking about. Tebbit grew up in a working-class household; his father was unemployed during the Great Depression--Morrissey's comments are patronising and shallow. Ironically many people living in council estates voted for Tebbit's Thatcherite policies, such as the Right to Buy council houses. Morrissey should stick to the music and stop embarrassing himself.
Firstly this is not from 'The South Bank Show' - it is from a Granada TV show called the Other Side of Midnight which ran from 1988 to 1990 (I think). Secondly Tebbit's book was published in October 1988, so this is obviously when this episode was broadcast.
Morrisey is a socialist twat and dont come back after your argentine capers

As a massive Morrissey fan I can't help but find his comments more than a little petulant.
Tebbit's book is called 'Upwardly Mobile' and tells of his rising from a poor working-class home in a north London suburb to his political career.
Tebbit is hardly a blue-blooded old Tory in fact in the book he refers to himself as a 'London prole'.

I dont know much about this politician but Morrissey is probably the most literate and well-read human beings walking the face of the earth. Period.
His opinions aren't just formulated on the spot.

Uninformed musicians talking about politics, is the equivelent of the House of Commons holding a debate on how best to play musical instruments.

Well Morrissey mentioned Hume.
The people of Hume have never, in a post-war general election, elected a Conservative Candidate.
So you can stick your generalisations.

The reading of the book upside down and subtle lift of the brow are hallmarks of Morrissey's sincere wit.
I also think that the latter comments show Morrissey to be the intellectual that he seldom recognised for.
