All you ignorant cunts are good for is getting fixed on one opinion and trying to defend it. fucking hipsters. music is love and you idiots dont deserve to get in the taste of something that beautiful. Covering old songs is a way to honor the original artist.. just btw.. peace and love
why do so many great songs have to have a fucking stupid rap crap version. this is total bullshit and it is a complete example of totally fucking up a great tune.
Of course the original is an undeniable classic. But musical styles don't stand still, each new generation brings their own sensibilities - high and lowbrow. I agree with the comment that this version and the the Black Eyed Peas version, brings this classic to a new generation. Even if the style seems moronic to us older fans of Samba.
Estes comentários são incoerentes com a arte brasileira, independentemente se for Sérgio ou Jorge a alegria é a mesma. Amamos as boas musicas deste país alegre que é o Brasil, mulheres lindas, samba, futebol, praia e natureza.
First of all if you look at Sergio Mendes as an innovator you will see that he was the Will.i.am of his time. The version that Jorge Ben Jor recorded was quite different then that of Mendes.
Second, it shows why Mendes has stood the test of time, he works with the best. If you don't the Black eyed peas aren't fresh then take a time machine back to the 70's and stay there. The song is beautiful regardless of how it is interpreted. Just like we Brazilians.
That fat chrome dome ruined an iconic tune. I'm sure Sergio didnt have the heart to tell him he's being a selfish leach. Fat baldy has no class. Sergio is ALL class!
Is that Lani Hall??? I'm glad they still sang the Portugues lyrics coz if they only did the rap part, it would have been INCOMPLETE!!! Good beat though, I have to say. :)
Oh....my.....gosh!! What the heck did they do to this?? They totally messed it up. Turned it into today's garbage they call music. Thumbs down...triple thumbs down.:(
Esta canció en especial es de mis favoritas y hay una versión que hicieron con Black Eyed Peas que es muy buena... Me encanta Sergio Mendes!!!! Saludos desde México!!
Too bad one of the original performance videos (of the 60s) got pulled by the sharks. Probably needed it to sell showcase Tym/Life CDs on Tv. But all you get is the music, not the videos. Ripoff!
DIS IS A SO COOL, COOL version de Mais que Nada. The name of theh song somes from ROSA, a braziliam woman who used to say "Mais que Nada" every time she talked. POST THE FULL, yes, FULL VIDEO !!!!!!
This is the first RAP that I have ever liked. Just like he introduced me to Bossa Nova in 1968, in Bellingham, now he is introducing me to RAP that is palatable. Bravo!
it's okay, but really you don't need to do much to a song that wrote itself from the heart of a gurufim. The bells and whistles just obscure the essence of this beautiful song. obrigado
@cesagabi a good music is a live music, music that serves its purpose...and both, the original and the BEP version are meant for joy, meant for dancing and there's the point.
But don't make it an art of autonomy, because it's not. And this music is meant to be live.
But in every age of human history there were conservative wannabe intellectuals with small or no knowledge about music making judgments, so I don't take your opinion from you and will respect that as a matter of individual taste
@cesagabi Jorge Ben Jors version is better, no doubt. but this version brought brazilian samba to lots of young people. Thanks to the black Eyed Peas this song got famous a second time.
@cesagabi this music was most probably meant to live, and so it does. I won't take your opinion away from you as music and art is only - you like it or you don't. Saying that after years of music studies.
One's pose doesn't or at least shouldn't play any role in such decision. Open mind ...and if you still don't like it, be it so. Nothing good or bad about that.
Sergio is the most renown for this version of this Jorge Ben song. I love it, but who doesn't? Have you ever listened to Tito Puente's version. It's about 20 minutes long and when it's over, you'll feel that it was way too short. It had a 7 minute keyboard solo didn't have one repetitive or stale moment. I first heard it on a Philly jazz station and have looked everywhere and can't find it. If you do,get it. You won't be sorry.BTW. Thanks for this post.
This is a great version. Forget all you who don't like it. Age has nothing to do with it. Sergio is still as good as before if not even better!!!!! The audience likes it also!!!
"Mas que nada" belongs to Jorge Ben, the real talent and author of this song. Look for Samba Esquema Novo, his album from 1963. Everybody talks about Brazil 66, but that is pure Brazilian music for "gringos". Listen to the original Jorge Ben!
Sergio, why legitimize Black Eyed Peas? Your original version was great. This is overly basie for people who are too dumb to pick up the rhythm of a song without having it blow their friggin ears out.
hahaha..cmon loosen up !!!...I luv the Sergios version from brasil 66,....but come on he's old and trying to revamp,...upgrade...reinvent...whatever u wanna call it...and he did it....of course in my personal opinion his 60's version kills this hip hop version no matter who is rapping..but wtf...music evolves...sometimes de-evolves...hehehe...I like to see him alive and doing well and playing his music in front of thousands of fans...they way he used to...so give him sum props! Lol!
Is the blond singer one of the original girls on the '66 version? I hope it is. And no doubt, the fake rapper is just god awful. The band sounds great, and the tune is virtually the same except for fuck-o trying to be a black man. I get what Sergio is going for, but the execution is horrible. I may have liked it better with a real rapper, but even then... why?
Ha ha ha... U got that right! Performance wise, I think Sergio sounds just as good as he did some 20, 30 years back, but this hit was intended for an elite audience back in the day...Guess he was attempting to revamp this song to attract a much younger audience today. Honestly, a hit this wonderful could sound just as good today even without the rapping.
I love the '66 version, but actually, this version catches some of the vibrant Brazilian spirit, imo. It's a party all the time in Brazil, I think..lol.They know how to have fun. But, I agree, the rap guy could stay a little further back in the background.
Its a sad comment on how taste has coarsened in thirty years. The original was light, joyful, sexy, sophisticated, gently inviting and a celebration of life and Brazil. Here we have an obese white gorilla pretending to be a black gangsta rapper, shouting meaningless grunts at the audience. Check out the original with Brasil '66 - it is sheer genius. This is just noise. So sad.
I've watched Sergio Mendes playing Mas Que Nada with Brasil '66 in the 60's, with Brasil '88 in the '80's, and in 2006. Each of the interpretations, even though they are played by the same person's band, reflect the style of the period they are in.
